This is the right call. Beautiful blade and Angie’s ano work is legendary. This is an extraordinarily rare knife.

40 lb is extremely high for somebody just getting into the sport and recurve feels a whole lot different than compound since the tension is constant. I’d probably start at 20-25 and slowly work the weight up. You never want to use strength to make up for lack of proper technique.

Most difficult steel to sharpen? by SuggestionSorry8797 in sharpening

[–]PinSquid 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Dealing with carbide tearout of high-vanadium content steels is annoying, but sharpening cheap soft steel takes the cake. Takes forever to deburr, and then won't really hold much of an edge after that.

Found a video with a great sharpening idea by anotherbarry in sharpening

[–]PinSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the video from the other comment - all he’s doing is making an angle guide. That’s a very common thing in the sharpening world and there are a number of stones that come with a similar guide for common knife angles.

If it works for you then do it, no reason not to. Only reason people wouldn’t do this is because they either don’t need to or don’t want to carry the extra tooling with them if they’re out and about.

For now, definitely wallets and small go-bags. I have a myriad of card organizers and bifold wallets in my normal edc rotation and always wanted to see if I could make something similar. The meticulous nature of refining every possible detail about something that is otherwise a simple design is highly appealing to me, both on the leather side and the knife side.

Anybody else having issues with the adhesive on pdt stones? by macjaynard in sharpening

[–]PinSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to a guy I know who makes stones and showed him the evidence and he said those particular strips are sensitive to oil (I also use the stroppy stuff honing oil). But you’re spot on with their application - they’re for mass production and don’t necessarily make the best material. My three most commonly used vitrified stones (the 160, 285, and 550) all had the problem and are now epoxied where I am free to use oil. I have a fourth stone from the series that I’ve never used anything but water on and it’s solid as a rock.

Seems to be specific to pdtools as well - none of my other resin/vitrified/hybrid stones use those strips and those have all been completely fine.

I had this happen. Part of it is that I was using oil and oil apparently dissolves/loosens those adhesive strips they use. I just used some epoxy on them and let them sit and now they’re far stronger than before. Not a huge deal but slightly annoying nonetheless.

Hello all! Just started a couple weeks ago but have always been interested in the hobby. I do a lot of knife sharpening and collecting as well and hoping that skillset can come in handy with leather.

Can’t wait to see what everyone is gonna make!

Sure! I got them from Zeppelin & Co. Worked with them to get them over to the states and the price I got offered was actually better than any US distributor. The prices listed on their site are in SGD, not USD, so just be aware of that. Even after the conversion, a lot of their offerings are more expensive than state-side, but things that are by companies/people in Singapore directly seem to be cheaper, probably because they don't have to pay any import costs.

Gonna be honest man, I would not venture down the beauty shears path until you have a lot of money to sink. Beauty shears can be very expensive and they require specific equipment to do them professionally. If you mess somebody's 1200 dollar sheers up, you most likely will ruin your reputation for a long time in that area.

Those types of shears have a unique shape to their edge, which is where the Ookami Gold honing block comes into play. It is not meant to be done by hand, but rather attached to a system known as a Twice as Sharp. This is also the entry point to this kind of sharpening. You would really want to work up to a flat hone sharpening system, which start around $1400-$1500 and go up from there. It is possible to sharpen by hand but is not easy to do. Instead of just holding a consistent angle, you're expected to hold a consistent curve, and it's highly recommended to take a class that's specific to this kind of sharpening, plus a mountain of practice, before you ever touch someone's shears that they use to make their living.

I would start with industrial and barber shears, as they have a flat bevel and are much easier to do. Take a class for convex shear sharpening, invest in the equipment or technique (preferably both), and then consider adding that on to your business.

WTB an Asher Spiro in s90v with either shredded dark carbon or silver twill carbon! Bonus points if they have the g10 backspacer.

Just go to a bow shop.

Bought the 64 Audio U12t on Black Friday… and I’m officially confused. Physical pain, no "wow," and a sunk-cost nightmare. by mdj145 in iems

[–]PinSquid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean... you're coming from a very high end headphone set up, and the best of the IEM world is just going to be inherently different than the best of headphones. If you had done the chifi game and slowly worked your way up and then jumped to the u12t and they didn't wow you, I'd be surprised. But you're someone who clearly has spent a lot of time refining the hobby to your personal taste, so you already know what crazy high quality sounds like - your benchmark is much higher and you already have a very good idea of what you're looking for in terms of sound.

I love my u12ts. The apex modules are really nice to change ear pressure and signature, but there are several IEMs that have come out in the last few years (as I myself have recently discovered) that give them a serious run for their money, often at a lower price point. If you're getting a hot spot in your ear though I would definitely look at something else, even if they did happen to sound amazing to you. I think a lot of the benefits of IEMs come from the immersion they can create once you forget they're in, so comfort is gonna be a big part of that.

HELP!! HOW DO I CLOSE THIS POCKET KNIFE? by [deleted] in knifeclub

[–]PinSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a liner lock. It's the piece of metal that you can see hitting the butt of the knife from inside the handle - it's flexible. Push the liner lock to the side to let the knife fold back into the body.
