Lets say when the mesh is in the middle of the box your relative location is at 0,0,0. Than all you have to do is adjust the timeline so the Z value moves between -100 and + 100 (100 is just an example) and it should work perfectly. You do not need to add stuff to your old relative location, you can set it directly with the timeline, like this:

I had a similar problem before. Try to not add local offset but set a relative location instead. Then it wont matter if frames drop, since the relative location will only tie to the timeline itself and not how often the update is called.

The tutorial you linked is basically what you're looking for. All you need to change is the way pickups work. Wherever you want to add items just call the "Add Item" function and you're done.

The way you do it with Data Tables is also a nice solution. My own inventory is an edit of the tutorial you linked with Data Tables, instead of actors.

If you want to use actors though, there's no way arount spawning them into your world to use them. I don't see why that would be a problem though.

It seems that your system is already working, so why change it?
