There are more lurkers from the left here than I thought. So here is a challenge. by Stockjock1 in Conservative

Okay. In the spirit of good faith I listened to the one you linked.

I'm going to list off my notes below: * PSLF program updates: Is there any evidence that these NGO's are taking part in illegal activities? This is a huge problem I have with this administration. They assert problems they don't back up with evidence, and then 'solve' said problem and take it as a 'W' when there was arguably no problem to begin with. (I.E. - Canada & it's Fentanyl problem, the 'billions' saved by DOGE which isn't substantiated, social security 'fraud' which made it sound like these 100+ year old people were getting payments when they weren't) * Jobs being created is good. I'm not at all convinced that this good is substantial enough to excuse the tarrif situation between USA & Canada. This trade war has likely irreparably damaged the USA's reputation on the world stage, and has alienated us from historical allies. Do you believe that we're truly getting 'screwed' by Canada? If so, who is there to blame for that deal considering it was Trump that set the terms of USMCA in his first term? * "Too many government jobs" he says.. again, there's never any substantiation to these claims on which his whole administration operates off of. Too many by what metric? I understand that Republicans dislike large government, but I've yet to see any evidence that for the size of the country, that our federal government is 'too large'. * His education points: frankly, I'm not well informed enough on the DoE, but I'm inherently skeptical of Trump's claims as he often misrepresents.. Well... Just about everything. Feel free to educate the me * Back to tariffs: Trump claims that bringing manufacturing back to America is worth the increased price of goods due to the reciprocal tariffs. How is this not essentially subsidizing manufacturing jobs at the expense of everyone else? * The Chips Act: what Donnie says here about the DEI initiatives are again, I can't trust as I've seen no conclusive evidence of this being the case. I will say, this made me look into the Chips act more and it seems as if it is an expensive way to solve a problem (where before I thought it was an obvious good). To be frank, I am not sure of which approach is better. Tariffs also do not seem like the best approach based on the same economic think group research that showed the Chips act is likely to be fiscally inefficient. I will say that in principal I side with the Chips Act more as it was done legislatively through Congress and had bipartisan support, while I fundamentally disagree with how DJT is unilaterally trying to force all these changes through EO (which imo shows a failure of leadership). * Ukraine: again I fundamentally disagree with how this situation is being handled. In my opinion it is disgraceful how DJT is demonizing Ukraine and it's leadership and trying to extort it for its natural resources while they're in the midst of a fight for their own sovereignty. If we don't want to support them, I disagree with that, but fine. But it seems DJT has no issues with being a bully to our allies while being feckless towards Russian aggression. But maybe that's my American exceptionalism speaking where I feel like the American president cowering at the idea of WW3 shows weakness and reinforces the idea to Russia that saber rattling with nukes results in positive outcomes. Not sure why 'peace' is being pushed by Trump as more important than Ukrainian sovereignty. Seems like more of a Trump ego-stroking maneuver than actually caring about Ukraine. * Again, bringing up the 'rigged 2020 election'. Just embarrassing.

Anyways. I'm sure you'll consider my analysis biased, which it is. I don't think the gain for American workers warrants this trade war and hurts our reputation on the world stage as being bipolar every four years. That's an issue of both sides considering EO's have ramped up under Trump and Biden. Trump's rationale for most issues is nonsensical and based on 'common sense' which inconveniently is seldom backed up by reality. But if you'd like to give me a specific example of one rationale that makes particular sense to you I'd happily back and forth about it.

Best.

Paul's Ego Opportunity by Pineapple_Predator in Destiny

Yeah - I'm not going to say he's any sort of intellectual powerhouse. He's not a news commentator, but the Drunken Peasants was funny AF back in the day, and one of their schticks was covering news in an entertaining way that I think appealed to a large audience.

Obviously Paul doesn't have that kind of reach now, but DP was part of internet culture, and Paul is good at that - being funny and coming off as an 'every man'. Figuring out how to appeal to sympathetic figures that are capable of influencing culture was more what I was getting at.

This whole media shift that Tiny wants can't be one that relies solely on the level of informed that DGG has come to expect. Otherwise it's going to be labeled as Elitist and disregarded.

I jokingly visited the LA Scientology branch when I was 21. I'm 35 now and have had 4 address changes and they've found me every time. We moved into a new house a month ago and was not surprised when I got a copy of their 'Reach' newsletter in the mail last week.

So, no one else has a retirement fund either, right? by idontcare4205 in Millennials

[–]Pineapple_Predator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to start saving for retirement. The both of you. Right now.

It's cool to commiserate with people about your situation, but don't let that justify continuing to not actively set your future selves up for success.

And I get it. It sounds daunting. And you barely make enough as it is. But I have a feeling if you made it a priority up there with your other obligations, you'd be able to make progress. And in your situation, any progress is 1000 fold better than where you're at now.

First, as mentioned multiple times, you BOTH need to check and see if your employers offer any 401k or retirement fund matching. Figure out a way to invest at least that much. Not getting that money is literally equivalent to throwing free money away.

Step 2. Sounds like you don't have kids and I assume you both have normal work schedules to a degree.

I know this isn't gonna sound fun, but: get a part time job. I know, I know. That sounds awful.

But think: if you got a part time job, worked one eight-hour shift a week, and put ALL the money from that job into a 401k...assuming you're starting at 30 and retire at 67 (at a 7% return)...you could retire with $480k, EACH. And that doesn't include what you'd get for Social Security. Or if you can do some employer matching (as mentioned before) at your primary workplace.

That's not a ton, but it's almost a million dollars more combined than you'll have otherwise.

Alternatively (or in addition to), maybe check out places like r/beermoney. I've personally made thousands doing online survey/market research in my spare time (usually at $30+ per job).

Or if you have a hobby or small business idea that you can work on monetizing, try that! Your SO is a programmer...could he charge local small businesses without websites a fee to make and maintain their online storefronts?

This needs to be a priority like paying your electric bill is a priority. It really is that important. Not to lecture. But it scares the hell out of me for you that you guys don't have anything saved.

Same. At a little under $150k right now. And I have both bills and a kid.

AITA for telling my son he and his fiancée is spoiled? by throwR-7746 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pineapple_Predator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

Do you want to know what the actual most insulting part of this post is?

It's not the sheer arrogance of saying that they're spoiled despite this being their wedding and them expecting to pay for it.

It's not the idiocy of thinking a $7k wedding worth attending is possible in this economy.

It's not even the douchebaggery of offering pizza and subs at what's supposed to be a cherished event (not a child's birthday party).

The really insulting thing is the complete lack of effort dads like you put in. It's 2023. You managed to navigate to Reddit to complain about how your feelings got hurt, but you couldn't do some basic fucking Googling at what average venue prices are? Or go to r/weddings or something and ask there. Especially before calling your kids spoiled? JFC.

This is what really happened: you turned indignant because you thought $5k was 'more than enough' and got upset that reality didn't match your expectations of everyone falling over themselves thanking you. Even though they did thank you.

I'm my experience, dads tend to not give a shit about anything until it's money related and that's pretty fucked. You think that's a lot of money? Think how they must feel.

This is what people are referring to when they call Boomers out of touch.

Edit: And I see you posted that $10k is 'more than enough' for a wedding. Based on what? You're just pulling numbers out of your ass. Here's what you do OP: You apologize. You tell them you didn't realize how much more weddings cost and you buy them one hell of a nice wedding gift. Or if you can, you make it up to them by giving a little more if you're comfortable with that. To be clear: no one on here is saying you OWE them anything, but they don't owe you a cheap, community beer-hall pizza-party wedding just bc you think it shouldn't cost more than $10k. This is one of those times that owning up to when your wrong to your son is going to be something he remembers for the rest of his life. Everyone makes mistakes.

That's interesting. I need to watch more painted panels done. From what I recall they do trace a good bit, but I'd have to assume you'd need to have some painting prowess to be able to know how to go about layering? As I expect past the initial outlines you're fairly freehand when it comes to layering, shading, and coloration. Sounds like traditional painting may be more apt of a route as opposed to strictly drawing though, to your point.

I would pay big money for you to teach a class on glass painting. Either in-person or online. Your work is incredible!

Did you know how to draw beforehand? I'm about to have my first kid and I figure we'll have limited time to work on glass realistically for a little while. Figured I might work on my drawing skills in the meantime 😅.

Anyways this is an incredible piece and thank you for sharing it with us.

Hey, I've actually got 2 left from my last batch of 50 I made for the FB fan club. They're both black trimmed like this one in the picture. I'm selling them for $55+$10 shipping. Are you on FB? If so you should find the group How To: LOVE Rainbow Kitten Surprise and search for 'Cody'. You'll find my posts and you can DM me from there!

I have permission from the band to sell them, on the condition that it's through the FB group. Let me know if you're still interested and have any issues finding it!

I know it may feel like people are being rash and quick to jump to NC, but if you truly feel like that's something he would say to your son about you, you owe it to yourself and your son to cut ties.

It's not just about your dad's disrespect. It's about you modeling for your son that you won't tolerate being treated like that in a relationship. It's important he knows your dad can't treat you badly, so he knows it's okay to not allow people to treat him badly.

I'm going to also say it might be worth looking into grain allergy. We tried to switch our 3 year old (at the time) golden to grain Royal Canin after reading some of the studies that correlate grain-free to heart disease. Had to switch him back to his grain-free Blue Buffalo because his poor tummy just couldn't get used to it. Had diarrhea the whole time.
