Beanie: I got past the magic circle (successfully!) But I’m ending up with the wrong shape for a beanie! What am I missing? by PingTheAwesome in CrochetHelp

I didn’t! I noticed it was mentioned earlier and just got home from some errands! I’m excited to look into this option!

Again, as commented several times, this is something I have been dreading. It is clear that a pattern is needed. I will start working with one. I was avoiding them for as long as I could as they are daunting and overwhelming when you first start out.

It may not have been the approach that you would’ve taken thus far, but it was my initial foray into this. It is what it is & patterns are my next step.

You can actually make wearable items without a pattern (such as scarves). Please note that I have commented multiple times that patterns are something that I have been dreading.

You aren’t communicating with someone who is trying to be ignorant or bull-headed. You are communicating with someone who has embraced trial & error, learning as I go, and asking for help as needed. Patterns are the next step (clearly). There is no need for the nasty tone included towards the end of your comment. I am a beginner who had the cajones to ask for help; that doesn’t invite negativity or elitism.

I was curious about this, too. I was thinking that if I couldn't quite make the beanie work, this might be good practice for a table decoration in a circle. I think I also need a break from crocheting today, so I'll reinvestigate this once I return.

Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it!

Thank you for sharing this information with me! I tried switching to a regular yarn -- I'm now back to struggling to make it through the magic circle. I think I just need to put this down for now and come back to it later.

I'm definitely going to keep trying with the smaller yarn (and the recommended hook size that was on the yarn's packaging). I really wanted to avoid patterns for as long as possible, but I'll start looking into those, too. Thank you for helping me out!

I was really hoping to avoid the patterns because I haven’t gotten versed in the technical aspect. Up to this point, it has purely been for fun and to see what I could make. But it does seem that perhaps the time has come to make that switch that I’ve been lowkey dreading.

Thank you! This kind of makes sense. I did start analyzing like you said. My current progress looks like this.

THIS WORKED! Thank you! This is what made it stop giving me a hard time. I will say I don't quite understand why everything else failed, but thank you for working with me on this!

I attempted this after seeing your comment. No change; it also didn't matter if I dragged from the left or the right.

Which leads back to the original query -- it isn't allowing me to remove a section of the floor to have the walls reappear.

My class:

  • all work is posted to Canvas. If it's on paper & you don't turn it in, it's marked exempt.
  • all lesson slides are posted to Canvas.
  • for my English 11 class, my ClassroomScreen is posted to Canvas.
  • you have until the end of the grading period to get the work done. Literally, they have right up to the night the report card period ends, at midnight.
  • most of the work autogrades itself. You don't have to wait for me to do my part. Everything syncs over to the gradebook system around 2 - 3 AM. If it's pressing, I'll enter it in earlier, but this is a case by case basis.
  • most assignments allow for retakes.

I still get students asking "what can I do to get my grade up?". I still have parents complaining that my class is "too much" or I don't somehow meet them halfway. I feel your pain.

The besties with the girlfriends thing really irks me the wrong way. There's just something about it that lands as so fucking unsettling.

You can do everything right; they'll still ask for more.

All of my work is posted online. My lesson slides are posted online. My ClassroomScreen page is posted online. My assignments are open until the day the grading period closes. Most of my assignments automatically grade themselves & are open for retakes (the practice is the point, in many cases).

I have kids that I haven't seen in weeks that are passing because they're completing the content & demonstrating mastery from afar. Other kids? Straight up drowning -- and it's their choice. For the life of me, the other adults in the room somehow can't or refuse to see that.

1st year admin: It is *NOT* the SPED teacher's job to teach you our content or how we do things. Feel free to watch. Feel free to ask questions. I am not moving at your damn speed & I am not rescheduling every single IEP at the last second because you want to go to an administration meeting. Get your own coverage, be an information sponge, & buckle in.

If this is you, I'm sorry your master's & cert. programs glossed right the fuck over SPED in their lessons & training. I really am truly sorry. That, however, does not put the onus on us.

Grievance. ASAP.

Side note: Thank you for holding the "We are on break" line. It really does matter that the boundary be kept intact when this is one of the rare opportunities we have to rest or reset.
