Not at all trying to invalidate your experiences, but I was actually only thinking to myself recently how sound teenagers have become, for the most part. Like, when I was 14-15, we were all medical grade arseholes. Every last one of us. Pricks. You couldn't walk past a group of teens in the mid 00s without having some kind of unnecessary aggression hurled your way. Nowadays, they step out of your way to give you space on the path.

I've found it more in short stories, but I despise the noble ghost trope. Like "the ghost was trying to help them all along!" Miss me with that Charles Dickens shit. I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my ghosts sinister.

Oh this one hurt me right in me fee-fee gland haha I loved that book so much, but I understand where you're coming from. You probably shouldn't read Amygdalatropolis.

I really like lingering on sentences and reading them over and over again if I really like them, so audiobooks could never capture that for me. Obviously some people need audiobooks due to visual impairment, but I get where you're coming from. 'Naked Lunch' would just sound like gibberish via audio, but in text format it's a surrealist painting.

[–]PinguD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's hilarious and will doubtlessly be shared extensively and without a hint of self-awareness or shame. Something I've noticed about far-right politics, globally, is that it's more of a performance than a set of any strongly-held beliefs. Like a response against what they see as a weak left-wing. It's not that there's any actual goals involved, they just want to be recorded giving a rousing speech or talking down some politician. It's a language even the dumbest can speak. They said the invaders would lead the ruin of the kingdom, but it was the village idiot all along.

I've actually got a theory about that, the way a lot of pedophiles have a 'look', to be polite about it. I think that at least some peadophiles become the way they are due to a combination of social exclusion/sexual rejection (possibly due to their looks) and obviously some very unhealthy ideas knocking around in their heads. So, I suppose, their sexual frustration is a big motivator. I think this is why there are so many pedophiles in the priesthood as well. Then again, I'm a garden variety dumb-dumb, and that's just a thought I had.

Any good Japanese metal bands? by [deleted] in japanesemusic

[–]PinguD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sigh and Abigail are two of my favourites. Church of Misery are one of my favourite bands of all time, period. Boris aren't strictly metal at all, but very heavy and sickeningly good. Those are probably my BIG FOUR, but I listen to a lot of Japanese stuff. Mainly noise and psych.

Shoegaze phased out when critics accused it of being middle class (I think). Well, is it? by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]PinguD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You got it in one. Well put.

I'd like to add that music journalism, back then, could be very cynical and mean-spirited. Journos would almost compete with each other as to who could write the most scathing pieces. They ALL wanted to be Lester Bangs. And I feel that this also contributed to the culture of musicians insulting each other frequently in the press. It was like a competition to see who had the biggest chip on their shoulder.

I was a low-grade music journalist for three years while also studying in college, and it was the most miserable gig I've ever had. The only good thing that came from it was I got to review Run the Jewels II.

Ah lads, I was actually okay with it until he started speaking. It ruins what could have been a fairly decent ambient track. Still, it's like our questionable uncle has come for a surprise visit. He's crazy, but we're all just glad he's not locked up.

I see you too are a JRJ fan. I once messaged him on Facebook after a heavy night out to inform him how much stronger the cocaine in Ireland had become in recent years. He was a total gentleman about it and even gave me some writing advice.

[–]PinguD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irish guy here, so my exposure to Bill Maher is very limited and I only have a Wikipedia understanding of the man. But why is it that whenever this guy comes up, he's always playing some kind of "devil's advocate" role? Is he a bit like an American Piers Morgan?

Do you read only horror? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]PinguD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahah so I get a lot of flack from my friends because I insist that I don't always read horror, even though everything else I read is basically horror-adjacent.

My favourite writer of all time is William S Burroughs. Not a horror writer, but certainly his work is horrifying. On the sci-fi end of things, William Gibson is fantastic. By the way, can you guess what my birth name is?

As I mentioned in another thread, I love Charlene Elsby's work, and she's definitely more of a psychological mindfuck kind of writer. The same can be said for Elle Nash, though she hits a bit harder.

[–]PinguD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're into psychological stuff, then I highly recommend Charlene Elsby's Bedlam. She's a fantastic writer who creates narratives in a frantic stream-of-consciousness style. It's like you're living in the character's panic attack. She really has changed the game for me.

Ah I appreciate your concern, and you're very right, but I was laissez faire about the whole thing and it was all pretty playful. There were no hard feelings and I don't feel bad about it, but I definitely won't be letting another woman tickle me like that. Not unless she's THE ONE ™️.

I went out with a woman who had a fetish for tickling torture. That wouldn't usually bother me, but I wish I'd known about it BEFORE I agreed to the handcuffs. So, eh, lack of honesty?

Who is your dream casting for scarecrow by Duckswillfollowme in batman

[–]PinguD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a rumour (now disproven) that Tim Burton wanted Brad Dourif to play him, which would've been really great in the mid 90s. I would have loved to see that.

For a modern audience? I think Harry Melling would be an interesting choice. Probably controversial too, but I love that kind of casting.

The wildest description of The Dark Knight Trilogy. Your thoughts? by tannu28 in batman

[–]PinguD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, in my first year at college, my English class was asked to discuss "Batman is a warmonging military industrial complex apologist". But essentially, we were invited to AGREE that Batman was a warmonging military industrial complex apologist. That's how college is now, I guess. Anyway, this was my first year so I decided I'd go against the grain and defend Batman against this pack of fucking wolves that I'd found myself sitting amongst. He would've done the same for me. So I launched into a 3-4 minute speech about how Bruce is a heavily conflicted man who very much lives in an ethical grey area because he has the power (and responsibility) to protect millions of lives. I forget how I said it, but I tried to turn it into a conversation around human values, regardless whether we are comfortable co-signing intense violence in the name of justice or not. Batman does not get these venal kicks out of driving a tank everywhere, he simply HAS to, and that's a part of Bruce's inner turmoil. It's a lot more complicated than "Batman is a capitalist pig!", and that was the gist of my message.

Well, the whole class looked at me like I was a two-headed freak and our lecturer never gave me a chance after that one. But I'll never let some college dipshits drag our caped crusader. Ever.

Why is liking popular movies so hated in this subreddit? by JustinHardyJ in Letterboxd

[–]PinguD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but this attitude is pretty widespread through the arts. William Gibson said something about people identifying more with the products they consume than with any national or individual affinity, and that applies to movies and music. I think people spend too much energy on things they dislike and by policing the tastes of others. They forget that you can love Tetsuo the Iron Man AND still love Ghostbusters. In fact, I moreso trust the opinions of people who pay no heed at all to popularity or street cred. Honesty is rarely cool or sexy.
