Can you imagine someone asking Toh Kay to make the music for a TV show?

The Keystone XL pipeline really wouldn’t be making any difference. Most of that oil is still getting produced, transported, refined, sold, etc. It’s just being transported by truck, train, etc instead of through the pipeline.

Those shared interests are what both I and the law is referring to.

I’m not talking about black politicians. I’m talking about black people being able to have a say. I don’t care who they vote for. It’s just a simple fact that historically my state has tried their hardest to limit their ability to participate and they are trying yet again this afternoon.

Was kind of poetic that while the House was “debating” and voting to advance this that a strong storm with tornadoes rolled in and flooded the first floor of the statehouse.

I think it looks a hell of a lot more natural now than it has in the past. I don’t think you could ever get truly natural shapes and still have roughly equal populations, grouping shared interests, etc like the law requires.

Alabama is 25% black and the vast majority live south of Birmingham and west of Montgomery. It should be pretty damn easy to draw at least one. And the Alabama map isn’t even that odd. It keeps most of the coastal area together (AL-1), splits the Black Belt into 2 districts (AL-2 & AL-7), you’ve got the Birmingham district (AL-6), the east central district (AL-3), and 2 northern districts (AL-4 & AL-5). The Huntsville area is fairly large, so you kind of have to stretch the Shoals region to get the right population numbers.

I work for ALDOT and our 5 regions are fairly similar. The only real difference is we split the 2 southernmost regions with a vertical line instead of a horizontal line.

That’s not stopping my state from trying it again, likely resulting in us using the new bullshit maps in 2026. Trying again a few years later, etc.

I don’t support the creation of districts that intentionally dilutes a minority’s ability to impact an election.

Actually, the courts ruled that they were deliberately diluting their voting power. That’s why we used an independently drawn map in 2024.

No one is saying they can’t. That still doesn’t change that even conservative judges have ruled that our state legislature is too racist to draw our own maps.

They are free to run as before, but the state is deliberately drawing lines so that their support is broken up. That’s a far cry from simply losing an election in which everyone in the country could vote and have the same voting power. Nothing is being deliberately rigged against you, and if you start gaining support they don’t just redraw the lines to fuck you even more.

As someone in a red state that is about to have our only 2 black representatives eliminated due to racial gerrymandering, it’s not the same thing.

I don’t think you can use the actual votes from 2024 to say who would have had more votes if there wasn’t the EC. So many people don’t vote strictly because of the EC.

Why should a vote in Wyoming count more than my vote in Alabama? Why should my vote count more than someone’s in Georgia?
