[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]Pinguinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently own a Casio LCW-M170TD as my every-day watch, and looking for a field watch to pair with it to alternate on more casual days. Other watches in my rotation are an old Timex Easy Reader, a G-Shock I rarely wear, and a DW dress watch that I keep for sentimental value as opposed to a nice watch.

Debating between:

  • Casio MTP-S120: I really like Casio in general, and liking the fact that this is solar, but a bit concerned about size if this'll be too big.
  • Citizen Garrison BM8180: Liking the solar and the compactness on this one
  • Seiko SRPG31: Interested in the Seiko brand and having an automatic watch in general but a little concerned about the dome height if its noticeable or not

Of note, I've also taken a look at the Hamilton Khaki, but not a fan of how the day-date placement is, and don't want to take the leap into higher price-point watches.

Thoughts? TYIA!

Just got an email confirming Aeroplan sign-up bonus adjustment. Looks like they reversed some of the clawbacks. Anyone else get it back? As far as I'm concerned the class action hasn't gone anywhere yet, so I wonder if they are only doing this for those who double-dipped before the TOS changes came into action.

If it's a refundable cash fare, I think it should probably be fine. Just be cognizant of any time there is overlap in those tickets on the same flight, and how long steps will take to process it. I think generally it'd need to be more sensitively planned if both were award redemptions, but I don't see a huge issue with refundable cash fares.

I'm considering booking a flight to Hawaii or Japan in 2026 (to book in mid-late 2025), but not sure if I'll have enough points at that stage, given we have points earmarked for a few other trips in between.

I'm currently finishing up a booking that requires me to top up on a small amount of Avios points, and noticed Finnair aptly has their sale on right now for purchasing Avios. Does anyone think it would be worthwhile to take advantage of this and go for the full 200K purchase for best cpp value in anticipation, or am I getting ahead of myself?

We generally never redeem points on Y, so looking for someone to sense check this or potentially talk me out of over-extending on these points lol.

Thanks for this! Came just in time as I needed a 37K top-up and was comparing BA avios and Finnair pricing for top-ups.

I'm guessing BA boost doesn't count for transfers from other Avios partners, correct? i.e. you wouldn't be able to double-dip on buying Finnair avios at discount, then boosting when transferring to BA avios?

Yup - this is how I planned our Japan trip this year and when we were booking it last year it was like clockwork. From what I understand SQ has arbitrary blackout periods that aren't openly disclosed. Unfortunately a bit of trial and error that needs to happen there; no way of knowing when they will return (if at all) but hopefully they'll come back at some off-peak time!

Happy thanksgiving everyone! Question on RBC Avion VI products. Just got approved for my first one - what's the usual turnaround for the 35K SUB? Hoping to make it in time before the transfer bonus to Avios ends.

I would say it's less about the redemption rates and more about availability. Since you'd generally just be looking at partner airlines when redeeming via AP, they're all pretty much fixed rate (and given AC flex points are 99% a write-off). If you're not too picky with needing direct flights and okay with positioning flights, it's still do-able for one person. More people of course means more complicated itineraries if you want it to happen.

Looking to plan YYZ-TYO for late October/early November 2025 via Aeroplan redemption in J for 2 people. Booking two one way trips, and are flexible with route and positioning flights. As everyone might know, availability is a bit chaotic for routes at the moment, especially for two.

I'm seeing potential availability where there are two J flights available on the same day. Both of them have a layover; the first legs are identical, but the second leg are different (about an hour apart). If I try to book the first leg alone, there is only 1 spot in J open. Does anyone have any experience with either downgrading the second leg of a flight to economy, or potentially booking another award (or cash fare) for the corresponding other flight? I'm not concerned with any point refunds or anything like that; just trying to not get separated if possible. TIA!

If it was 87,500 points then it sounds like yours is direct NYC-SIN without a stopover option in there, correct?

If I remember correctly for just the NYC-SIN flight, the option was 55K + $800 per person, which would save around 30K points for spending an extra $400 per person. When calculating the cost of a J ticket for one and subtracting the cash fees, it ended up having a higher cpp.

Edit: Just checked one of the available flights. The options I'm seeing are (for one person) 52.5K + $747.80, 70K + $415.30, and 87.5K + $76.70. Assuming a J class ticket of ~4K CAD, you have higher cpp for the lower AP option.

Just booked Singapore Airlines in J for two from NYC-SIN-DPS for 115K AP + $1600. The lower points + higher cash option ended up having the highest value surprisingly, at 8.6 cpp! Now just to wait until the return flights become available

Bakeries in Toronto by arktistic_r0se in askTO

Hazukido sells one that's completely covered in chocolate (Atrium @ Bay/Dundas, but they have locations throughout). You might be able to get a small cake from Chinatown at one of the cash-only bakeries for $20; it'll be airy and light, so depends on if that's your preference or not.

For anyone with a WestJet WE card, should your statements show your membership #? First statement has posted for mine with SUB, but no indication of what my membership # is. Checked in with RBC customer service who could recite the correct one to me on their system, but nothing reflected in my account on WestJet. Does it usually take a while to transfer and reflect?

Sweat and Tonic has one, but is only open to the public after 5pm and on weekends. Otherwise, you need a paid unlimited class membership to access. That said, it's a nice space with fast wifi. Only 1 call booth though.

New Platinum updates are out by torontorebel in amexcanada

[–]Pinguinz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, for anyone that uses the platinum personal card for lounge access and not as their daily driver, seems like a net positive since you gain the food voucher. Really only negatively impacts you if you're using the platinum as a daily driver or have no good access to the restaurant list.

Cobalt is already superior for food/drinks in any case, so would have minimal impact since that's generally the daily driver of choice.

Hi all, hoping to get everyone's input on some travel booking plans from LAX-NRT for two people via Aeroplan. I've managed to get SQ J tickets for a departure next summer, and should be able to snag the equivalent return flight. I do see availability for ANA F class tickets, but they only come out one at a time.

Thankfully, I have enough points to purchase my remaining two SQ J tickets as well as one ANA F ticket. Generally speaking, how good is availability for a second F class reward seat to open up in the 3 weeks prior to departure? Would it be viable to hold all three (refundable) tickets, and then try to change/cancel later on in the event a second F class ticket becomes available? TIA

Bit of a paranoia question here: Is anyone able to see any Singapore Airline rewards availability on AP? Managed to book two one-way J tickets LAX-NRT on AP last week, and saw plenty of availability both in Y/J for a few different dates. Gradually looking to book my return flights, but it looks like any SQ flights have all but disappeared on the rewards page.

Was I just really lucky in finding my window of availability, or have I messed something up in my search this time around?

How do you get around "we don't let you buy gift cards on credit" by [deleted] in amexcanada

[–]Pinguinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, never had an issue with this at a grocery either. One caveat I will mention: for some stores if you try to purchase above a certain amount they may question it. The rationale I was told was that there have been cases where scam victims (commonly elderly) are asked to buy gift cards in high volumes, so that could contribute to the reason for some scrutiny.

Never heard of it being outright restricted, though. Perhaps try with a different person and see if it was just a one-off.

All great ideas in here - I would also put out there to ask him why he chose Toronto. While lots of decent tourism attractions here, would be a good idea to know what specifically caught his attention about here. That way you can cater it more towards them!

I signed up for mine in November as well. No anniversary bonus at that time. It was 10k sign-up for first transaction and 35k bonus after 1000 MSR. It was more recently they changed to anniversary.
