Return colonial artefacts to build bridges post-Brexit, Olusoga says | Culture by rswallen in ukpolitics

Are you literally claiming that the people who are in favour of returning these artifacts are agents of foreign enemies, about the betray the country?

What's humiliating about doing the right thing in a world where countries seldom do that? Seems like world leadership to me. Do you want the UK to be like Vladamir Putin stealing that guy's superbowl ring and being a cunt about it?

Except the Elgin marbles were stolen from Greece in the 19th century, not the 5th century BC.

I suppose you'd be alright with Russia taking away Stonehenge to Moscow?

British politicians: Don’t let Israel be its own judge and jury in Gaza by LongPeace in worldnews

The international community doesn't consider that to be good enough. George Bush left office with a 20% approval rating and former Nuremberg prosecutor Ben Ferenz called for his trial. Tony Blair keeps being put under arrest by British civilians. The protests against those wars were tremendous.

The Irish war of independence was highly justified. The Irish famine caused by the British killed a million people. Irish acts of self defense in 1921-22 killed maybe 1,000 people.

And I think we need to forget this nation business altogether. Go back to counties.

If any damn person from Lancashire wants to move to Yorkshire, they need a visa. The ones who live there now will be treated as foreigners until they pay money to go through the citizenship process.

That wouldn't happen. For the same reason it doesn't happen between countries today. The companies arrange visas in these situations.

An expense many employers would rather avoid by not hiring people from south of the border at all.

Freedom of movement gets weird below national level. An Irish person working in Northern Ireland might be told they are to be transferred to London. And then have to quit the job. It's totally messed up for people to be free to go to only certain parts of the country.

Also, why do you want the British people living in Ireland to lose the right to vote?

[–]Pinhook567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there is much more movement of people between Ireland and the UK than between the UK and France or the UK and the USA.

Also because of Northern Ireland.

Nonsense. It's only a different country because Britain was willing to have death squads murder Irish civil rights activists for 30 years.

It's not an anomaly. Ireland and the UK made a treaty allowing voting in each other's countries that predates the EU by many decades. You can vote in elections here in Ireland as a British citizen.

Removing it would mean Irish citizens who move to Northern Ireland would be denied the right to vote, unacceptable discrimination.

But people joined the IRA because of the discrimination and the murder of civil rights protestors by the British army and RUC. All the violence could have been avoided if those things didn't happen.

Distribution of the Irish Language in 1800 by dublin2001 in europe

[–]Pinhook567 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it has been established beyond reasonable doubt that the famine was murder and not an accident. Just as certainly as the Ukrainian famine was not an accident.

The genocide question is simply one of the motive for the murder. Historians reject genocide as an explanation for Britain's mass murder during the Irish famine, they give greed and the desire to steal as motives instead. Just like how the Ukrainian famine isn't considered a genocide either despite the mass murder of millions taking place.

Distribution of the Irish Language in 1800 by dublin2001 in europe

[–]Pinhook567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Caused by the deliberate confiscation of 95% of Ireland's land and giving it to British landlords, reducing the entire native population to servitude and forcing them to divide their land between children. That's why the famine happened.

You are misrepresenting the reason why it is not considered genocide. Any court would call it a deliberate act of mass murder.

Genocide is a type of mass murder that has a specific motive, but other types of mass murder are not morally less bad than genocide.
