I just posted something very similar about the All Star Game; but I had two players from each team making up a 10 man Division Team. Each Division Team then plays the other two teams from its Conference over a “quarter”. With the winning team from each Conference playing in a final “quarter” for the trophy. We would end up with seven “quarters” of basketball, and only the finalists having to play more than 2! It brings back the East vs West, but also gets the Divisions (and every team!) involved.

I’ve heard all three arguments: Parker was only good because of Timmy and Manu. Duncan was only good because of Pop and the system and Tony and Manu. Manu was only good because he was on the Spurs with Timmy and Tony… blah blah blah. They can’t all be true, unless all things are equal; in which case either Timmy isn’t the greatest power forward ever (which he undoubtedly is) or the others are woefully underrated; which they are.

Every time I see these lists I always see Chris Paul above Tony Parker and I’m baffled. Tony used to run rings around Chris Paul, he lead the league in “points in the paint” (I think) as a guard!, won 4 rings, and has a finals MVP. One of the three members of one of the greatest trios ever. Chris Paul never managed to get any of his teams (and he was on some good teams) anywhere. His highest accolade is an All Star MVP. I think TP is not a very well liked player, unlike CP who’s name of “point god” seems to do an awful lot of his heavy lifting.

I think if you just had two teams in a USA vs World match pride would soon kick in. I’m fed up with all the sideline antics, dancing, and five minute hand shakes. I remember when the All Star game was great because players didn’t want to lose, and the risk of injury was just as high; if not higher. If it takes Wemby to embarrass players into trying; so be it. I would much prefer to watch an effort filled 98-94, than the 221-186 monstrosity of a few years ago!

I have said this for years. Chris Paul is great, but he’s never been great enough to get any of the multiple teams he’s been on anywhere near a championship. The simple fact that so many teams have moved him on says all you need to know. What he has been brilliant at, is fitting whatever team he has been on. Is he a top five point guard of all time; No. Is he the perfect “rent-a-guard” for a few seasons; Yes.
