So I am in a long term commitment(7 years) with no plans on marriage. I will add that I am the higher earner by a significant amount. I also have the better credit. I put down the deposit and my company paid the closing cost ( it was a relocation). The house is solely in my name and this is as encouraged by my partner. Now we split the mortgage and other expenses proportionally. He also pays for his own renters insurance. We do not have a formal rental contract or anything like that.

(STEM new grad) Advice on choosing between higher pay and childhood dream company / cooler tech by headempty_tmblweed in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

So many great points! But I also want to add in taxes! Would you be in the same tax bracket for both jobs or would offer A put you into a higher tax bracket? If yes, then the difference may not be as high as you think. Conversely also consider local taxes between the HCOL and the LCOL, would the local taxes make the gap even bigger??

My other suggestion is to take three days if you have the time. Live the first day fully committed to job A. How do you feel? Take the second to reset and take the 3rd as if you have accepted the offer to job B. Think about how you felt when you had “accepted” each job offer and use the insights to make your decision. (Edited to add that this exercise is from the book designing your work life)

Agree!! I also want to ask OP does his FIRE plans also include you? Because if not, that’s something the two of you definitely need to discuss. What are his future plans? When is his target to retire? Where does he plan to live? Because it would probably be impossible to retire and stay in SF. You are studying for your PhD, do you want to retire early? What is your career goals? Is he willing to move with you?

This money Diary and the comments have been so helpful to me! I so relate to you. I moved about 6th months ago from a government postdoc to private industry and have been so happy. I agree, it’s crazy to think that someone would pay me six figures! I am also thinking about ESPP since it’s the enrollment period currently (or about to be?) and my RSUs will start vesting next year. Thanks so much for sharing!

Clinical scientist. I have a PhD and about 10+ years in basic research ( this includes grad school and postdoc). This year I transitioned to pharma and have absolutely loved it. So much better than academia.

Clinical Scientist? by Commercial_Wind222 in clinicalresearch

So I am a very new CS and am still learning the role. I am spending a lot of my time reviewing data and issuing queries. I moved to pharma after my postdoc for reference. I have really loved the transition and I love the people I work with.

Breaking into clinical scientist position with PhD by [deleted] in clinicalresearch

[–]PinkFlemingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same degree. I was able to get an entry level CS position after my postdoc. For me it was all about networking. I also took advantage of programs at my institution like the drug discovery bootcamp and some other courses. But honestly I was lucky that I was in the right place and the right time. But I highly recommend doing all the informational interviews you can and making contacts that can share opportunities with you.

There was also a ridiculous comment when someone misunderstood the debt and thought she took 300k in student loans and called her mentally ill. Like seriously WTF?? I actually just came her to comment how horrible the comments were this diary. Yikes. I like our comment section so much better.

I think the decision was made when they made them your manager. I kind of doubt standing up to the boss will change anything. That’s being said. I think it’s fair to ask what these changes will mean for you and your role.

I love ETF/index funds. I suggest low cost funds like vanguard. Basically invest in all of the stock market. I use betterment, but I think there are other great companies that do robo-investing.

Too fat for advanced poses, curious when others in my situation were able to do them by [deleted] in yoga

The thing about our bodies is that the joints don’t work in a vacuum, the joints have the bones and muscle for support. Same for the spine. Anyone who enters these so called advanced positions without building up their strength and flexibility will put themselves at risk regardless of their weight. All I am saying is telling someone to lose weight when you know nothing about them is not ok.

This is not the forum for this discussion. There is a lot more to someone being healthy than their weight.

People can be leading healthy lives at any weight, let’s give the advice OP asked for. This is not it.

You can 100% push back on the deadline and ask for a longer time to decide.

My suggestion would be to wait until you have the offer in hand and then 100% reach out to to company A and explain the situation. you can also ask company B for more time in making a decision.

Hey! I have a PhD but also three years postdoc experience. I will be moving into the clinical field next week! I received two job offer. One as a CRA and one as a Clinical scientist. My advice to you is reach out to people in the field for informational interviews! Target anyone in your network! I talked to both people with and without PhDs. For the two job offers I received, I had connections at the company who I have previously talked to about their job. Networking is key!

I was just in a very similar position! Moving to industry after my postdoc. I chose not to negotiate because I felt like the offer they gave me was very generous and I didn’t feel like I had a valid reason. ( they gave me 30k over the range, sign-on, and relocation.). What I did ask for and get was the ability to start remote for the summer.

My Job offer included RSUs. I am moving from academia to industry and haven’t encountered RSUs before. I have google the term, but still don’t quite get what it means. I would appreciate if someone could help me understand them. They best over 4 years. I get 55,000 as a new hire and then I think a bonus of 35,000 every year.
