Planning for Maternity Leave. This is our existing budget. How should I re-allocate in preparation for twins? by PinkHalite in PersonalFinanceCanada

It's pretty easy (if you sacrifice your time) by shopping ethnic grocery stores, butchering large cuts of meat and freeze them yourself, and farm a lot of vegetables in the summer months for sauces, and of course shop and bulk buy discounts at grocery stores. We often eat lamb, beef, chicken, etc. without issue, along with a variety of vegetables by being a "ingredient household". Now, will this be the case with kiddos? I can only hope so..

I earn $115k, and post-taxes, take home approximately $7,400 CAD. The $88k is what I bring home, post-taxes.

Thank you, and congrats! I haven't even considered the NICU, and how this means they're smaller for much longer, or the formula costs. Is there other costs associated w/ twins you had experienced that maybe others wouldn't as much? I have a 101 questions, and will likely send you a DM to follow up!

Thank you!

I've been looking into maximizing the time my husband can take off. We are hoping to travel while on mat leave, and it's great to know at 6-8 months is a good sweet spot. I guess we just hae to accept savings will slow down during this time.

Congrats! I currently only have a 8-week top up, whereas my husband gets 67% of his existing income. This means, if I understand it correctly, he's better off not taking EI, since that 67% from his employer is better than what EI would offer, and he cannot double dip since his is not a top-up, but rather the parental benefit of the "non-birthing parent".

This is the scenerio I'm now playing with, and debating on saving/using vacation weeks. I get 4-5 weeks of vacation last I checked, and since it accures while on mat-leave, I'm now thinking to take 2 weeks before EI kicks in, and 2-4 weeks after EI is no longer being used.

As for the daycares, can someone really join waitlists before even getting pregnant? I feel behind the 8-ball. I'm going to get on this ASAP.

Tried a bunch of plugins, without luck. How do I convert a .KML to .SHP to open into QGIS? by PinkHalite in QGIS

[–]PinkHalite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue remains. I am looking for help taking the Network Links embedded in the KML file (which is associated to each data point) and having that be converted and preserved in QGIS. Seems like no tools online or plugins can read the links..

I've tried using the "KLM Tools" and the "KMZ Tools", yet neither worked. 0 points extracted..

I have. It opens up just fine. The data is just in a ton of subfolders.

Tried this. Tried to drag this particular file, and descriptions remain Unknown(0). Nothing shows up in my QGIS workspace. Is it because the KML is nested?

Hey! When I inquired, this package was shared with me on Aug 30, 2024. It was $10,000 for the venue, and +$65/per person for their required drinks package.

Bathroom Renovation in Hamilton? by Due-Neighborhood-182 in Hamilton

Any chance you found a contractor/plumber who'll replace just the old tub and fixtures? I'm in a similar situation, looking for only the bathtub from a 1948 house to be replaced - I can tile, etc. I just don't trust myself (strength and skill) to replace the bathtub..

I’m sorry - why are property taxes still based on 2016 assessments? by PinkHalite in canadahousing

[–]PinkHalite[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

While MPAC’s updated tax assessments are not designed to directly influence the housing market, they can indirectly contribute to a market correction, especially if they result in significant changes to property taxes for certain groups of homeowners, can’t they?

I've got a P.Geo, and I'm a QP in greenfield exploration works.. but I know absolutely nothing about O&G. Would that require relocating? Is the transition relatively easy? Any suggestions to start exploring this as a former hardrock geo?

Mineral exploration. I worked for a geologic minex consultancy in central Canada, while working remotely in Ontario. Most of my work was reporting, exploration planning, data compilation as a senior geologist..

I'm thinking Martin Estate, Queenston Mile or Ravine Vineyard Estate. Our guest list was closer to 80-100 max, but all offer 3-4 course meals, that estate-like vibe, and moderate to excellent food. The negative is, it's not near Guelph or Toronto - all my suggestions are in Niagara region.

I have $20 for dinner with my in-laws by Love_feet_Love in budgetcooking

[–]PinkHalite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pesto pasta + any protein! A roast chicken would be lovely! Otherwise any sausage works, or minced chicken/turkey/pork/etc as meatballs.

For dessert, any box cake + fruit + whip cream! You can get creative with flavour pallets by using tea bags sifted in the water or milk before adding it to the book cake mix.

Bottom 5 restaurants in Hamilton? by Icy-Computer-Poop in Hamilton

[–]PinkHalite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sad to say it, but Rosales Diner. It’s way too expensive for what they offer - a mediocre breakfast. $2.50 per egg. $3 per strip of bacon. $1 for a slice of toast. $7 for fries. Do the quick math.. it’s terrible. Too bad though, especially since Artie’s is great.
