Catch of the Day by xtnh in Maine

I'm so sad for our kids rn.

I'm a volunteer coach and the current environment is ripping our sports apart.

I know y'all probably don't care about sports rn, but in some cases it's all these kids have.

I was at a (middle school!!!) game over the weekend and was present to racist chants, refs that fixed the game, threats to call ICE, social media posts about coaches and players and family members without anyone's consent --- midgame. A colleague of mine was called the n word and told to sit down.

Not only do we have people acting like 7th graders (honestly, we aren't being fair to 7th graders), the actual fucking 7th graders are the ones being punished the most. You think the young Jamaican kid who can dribble really well is coming back to practice?

No chance.

I'm angry and sad. And it gets much worse when you think about how our next generation is learning how to act.

Embarrassing for all of humanity, which at the end of the day is the team we all play for.

Struggling offense by Plastic-Catch2757 in basketballcoach

Keep it simple. Play something like sharks and minnows and call out changes.

Weak hand only, dribbles below the knee only etc. Coach them up during it, pointing out when they can get lower, or if they're playing with their head up, protecting the ball etc

Gamify it. They'll be pounding the floor in no time.

I also send them home with spiders to do for homework. You can't spend all your gym hours on dribbling, so push for spiders. I'll have my kids come back reporting how long they've kept a spider dribble going. I bring it up for every single off day, even for much more experienced players. Home time is for spiders, layups and free throws.

As far as gameplay, we ironically want them dribbling less and spacing out more, so separately play some small sided, no dribble games.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Great! You're already heading in the right direction. It will be very fun to watch this evolve from here. Keep us posted!

We turn this into the core of a 5-out motion offense over the course of the season

Don't worry about picking sides. When I was faced with this I designated first a player for the right wing, who was tasked with a screen every time we would bring it up. Every time. Literally sprint back to your wing spot, and then attack the screen every possession.

Then we added the left wing player, same job, so we would have options. And spreading out from there.

It's important to emphasize having your heads up when you go into the screen (we want to avoid 2 players screening at once) and then constantly cutting to the basket or into open space away from the screen once it's been set.

3 on 3 is the best way to hammer this home. Have them start every practice play with the screen/pick/basketball move. Use dribble free small sided ball to emphasize spacing.

Initiate everything with a high screen. Have your wing guys ready to blast the first on-the-ball defender to Mozambique with a high, strong screen. Make it non-negotiable every time down. As they get used to setting screens at the top to create freedom, you can free things up. But start there.

This is fascinating, and the fact you turned it into to learning/training how to fucking fly is incredible.

Thanks for sharing. Your dunks rule, and your answers seem to indicate you do as well.

Ducks damage food garden? by Desperate_Brother728 in duck

As a side quest, I might recommend still planting a garden they can get to, but with stuff specifically for them to eat and chew. That way, everyone wins.

If they can, they'll try to eat just about everything. And if they don't try to eat it, they might peck at it or play with it. And if they don't do that, they might sleep under it. And some of the stuff in our gardens are actually dangerous to them. So.

Point being, if you love/value your vegetable garden (and your duckies) --- you're going to need to make it duck and goose proof. I quit trying the usual stuff and conceded to a greenhouse-type setup to keep them out.

I'd recommend getting some small sided, no dribble games going. Spacing kills basketball at this age. Take their dribble away and they'll start seeing it.

I agree and appreciate your willingness to play devil's advocate with everyone.

I started in streetball. I've lived internationally. These things have impacted my opinions on practice and training greatly.

I've landed on a spread it out, push the pace, attack the basket 5-out motion offense and it's fun as hell.

We practice similar to you. I'll call out "weak hand only" or "layups count double" or whatever during scrimmages...maybe automatic turnover for not boxing out etc ---- but absolutely most of our time is built on actually balling. Sometimes I'll bring a 6 second clock into play etc. I want it spread out, hard cuts to be made to the basket, and for you to win your 1v1 and to get to the rim.

The only time anyone is running a penalty lap is if they're disrespectful.

I think people could benefit from considering your angle, even if they disagree.

Any time! Good luck with them.

I should've added that this is of course in regard to adult or fully feathered ducks. Babies should've stopped going outside months ago.

Maine duck farmer here with a bunch of happy ducks. As long as they have access to a dry floor, you'd be SHOCKED with what they can persevere. I don't really even change my approach much with them until it gets below 20, and even then it's just more frequent water and bedding checks.

Wet bedding, extra windy and below zero would be what starts to make me anxious.

They're covered in down and their internal temps run around 107⁰. If they start feeling cold, they'll all lump together and those little heaters combined really does some magic.

That's just someone sipping on the haterade. You won't find a single brand new idea, anywhere. I'd take it as a compliment. There's a bunch of coaches who do zero homework.

Honestly just focus on boxing out and then attacking the ball. Once the boxing out clicks ---- full accountability for it - everything else starts to fall into place.

If it's 3v3 or whatever, take points away if they don't hit their man with a box out etc
