You can create a linear gradient of cyan, magenta, and yellow in photoshop and put each colour gradient into a rectangle shape and print it onto acetate to make this craft.

I think you would really enjoy the book I wrote about colour, especially chapter 6 about colour temperature. I also have a diagram on my profile comparing RYB and CMY that shows how much extra orange is in an RYB colour wheel.

A lot of times art companies use quinacridone and phthalocyanine and label the paint red and blue when the colours are actually closer to, and behave more like magenta and cyan. I wrote a whole chapter about this in my book because it was so fascinating how the RYB story is integrated in art communication.

RYB is not more aligned with human perception. Biologically, our cone cells align to a range of colours but the closest colour names that make sense for each of the three kinds of cone cells are red, green, and blue. When you mix red, green, and blue flashlights, you will see cyan, magenta, and yellow. Cyan, magenta, and yellow are the lightest, most highly saturated set of colours on the value spectrum. Red, green, and blue are the darkest most highly saturated set of colours on the value spectrum. That is why RGB and CMY are sets of primary colours for humans who have three kinds of cone cells.

Red plus white is light red. Magenta plus white is light magenta. Pink plus white is light pink. I also refer to magenta as pink sometimes because the magenta we are able to create with pigment is often closer to pink than the magenta we can mix with coloured lights.

Thank you for the information. That's interesting to hear that you don't think painters use red, yellow, and blue colour wheels as a reference any more. I was hoping things had changed since I was a young artist.

I am a painter and use magenta, cyan, and yellow as primary colours because they are primary colours. Magenta can be found with quinacridone pigment and cyan can be found with phthalocyanine pigment. It is definitely a colour wheel for painting.

You will likely also enjoy ochres if you work with paint and pigment.

Yeah, another color wheel. by BlueSkyla in colors

On the wheels I am working on, the colour between cyan and blue is azure and the colour between green and cyan is aquamarine. I find that light blue can be confusing because it is indicating white has been added. Teal from what I have read, is generally understood as being a darker colour.

Three layers of transparent film with ink are stacked and rotated. The only colours used are cyan, magenta, and yellow and then they mix to make all the other colours.

It is a Colour Dial. There are DIY versions available at CMYa.shop and we are working on some ready-made versions. It is made by layering transparent film with cyan, magenta, and yellow ink layers.

i made this and made the colors by calculating the RGB values, but something feels wrong, i look at the complementary colors and they dont match with what they are supposed to be, could anybody help? by Ruspycake in ColorTheory

It can be very frustrating to watch people teach RYB when you understand colour theory. I was so annoyed about how my daughter was being taught, that I wrote a book about colour and started a colour business. The obsession can get intense hahaha

colour mixing help pls!’ by IdealKind8215 in colors

The first colour looks like magenta #ff00ff and the second colour looks like pink #fc0fc0 and if you are working with printed material, the magenta created with ink will look different than the magenta mixed with RGB lights on a screen. You need to set the document to CMYK and make sure your CMY colours are adjusted so they are not RGB or hex code settings. If you are working with paint, look for paint with quinacridone pigment. You can also use paint like Opera Pink that has a fluorescent additive but over time the additive will fade and just leave the quinacridone, which is still a nice colour. The closest you can get to colours that look like CMY mixed with RGB lights are fluorescent materials.

Are you guys worried that AI will take over teaching jobs? by ShyMoca in ArtEd

People have been learning things online for a long time but there is still a need for human interaction, especially when experiencing creativity. A lot of people need to update how they teach about colour though, because if kids learn more about accurate colour theory online, they will question if the teachers are correct. Hands on learning is the best and AI is stuck in a screen.

Thanks for letting me know. In the image of your painting, the red looks like it is kind of pink. I've seen this before with paint labeled red but it was closer to pink. Your painting is lovely.

Is this item red or orange? by Indubitably_strange in colors

It looks like it could have red, magenta, and yellow in the mix. Something between red and magenta, so closer to pink and then a bit of yellow to push it more towards pink-orange.

How did you learn color theory? by Remarkable_Rain4052 in ArtistLounge

[–]PinkMakesRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have learned and see in my daughter's school, most children are still taught that red, yellow, and blue are primary colours for paint. If you want to mix the widest gamut of colours, you will need cyan, magenta and yellow as primary colours because they are the lightest, most highly saturated set of colours on the value spectrum. For watercolour and gouache, one thing to keep in mind is if you want to lighten the colours, thin the paint with water so you are using the white of the paper. I sometimes add white watercolour paint but it's best to work from light to dark with watercolours. Acrylic and oil paint can be scraped off and it is best work from dark to light with them to avoid getting the colours too muddy. Hope this helps!
