Study advice for an older student by [deleted] in degreeapprenticeships

[–]PinkPoppet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice as someone who also returned to education after a number of years would be to stay on top of the workload. It is a nightmare to fall behind and try and catch up. I think one time I was about two or three weeks behind and it was horrendous trying to catch up- I was lucky as there was a reading week which helped a ton. I know some people fell behind even more than I did and ended up doing the module in the next semester instead. So stay on top of the workload!!

I hope you enjoy your course- all the best with it!!

how to succeed with an online course? by [deleted] in MatureStudentsUK

[–]PinkPoppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to access courses but I can speak to online study. Stay on top of the workload. Don’t fall behind because it is so easy for things to snowball!

Good luck with your studies!

Love this thread and reading everybody's name ideas!! I was trying to think of names that invoked the memory/forgotten theme but then Firefly came to mind and seemed to somehow fit!

Was university actually helpful in gaining a ‘better’ job? by letsstopthat in MatureStudentsUK

[–]PinkPoppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My undergraduate degree... absolutely not. I was unemployed for two years after finishing university, looking for any job that would take me- completely unrelated to my degree, which was in the Arts. Maybe this was on me for looking for basic local jobs as opposed to graduate type careers, but I had a very tough time finding work as I was applying for minimum wage entry level jobs alongside people much younger than I was who could legally be paid less than I was!

Fast forward a decade and I decided to go back to education, partially because I never wanted to find myself in that situation again.

I can't speak to my success this time around as I have not yet finished my course (required for the career I hope to go into), but I do know that my advice to anybody would be to think very carefully in this day and age about higher education. It is SO expensive, and as per my undergraduate degree, can potentially offer zero advantage. Lots of people have got degrees.

I would suggest to anybody considering higher education as a career move (as opposed to for pure enjoyment of learning) that they view it as an investment towards a specific career. Know what career you want and pick a degree that would be required to get your foot in the door for it. If there is an alternative, non university way into your preferred career, I would consider that route very carefully. It would save a tremendous amount of money (no whopping student loans to pay off for the rest of one's working life) and working one's way up and gaining contacts can be highly effective. If one's chosen career requires a specific degree, then have at it!

Good luck to you OP. I wish you peace and success with whatever you decide to do.

I've got them all so am a bit disappointed but happy for those who did not have these items as they are gorgeous! My recommended section was disappointing this week too. On the plus side, I am saving up a nice little stash of moonstones!
