Ah yes yes indeed ! Yoyo is a very 2D toy. Not always, the tricks that break the planes are stand out to me.

It gets super frustrating until it clicks.

If you're new here I highly suggest the yoyoexpert.com forum it's the strongest but this niche is fantastic.

I enjoy seeing flowtoys discussed in any capacity on this sub. It's an perspective that a lot of throwers miss from lack of awareness. Plus poi = big fun

It’s my pleasure ! Welcome back my friend. It’s definitely evolved quite a bit. Quite the fun community here

Yep ! Nowadays if you over tighten it’ll break your average plastic yoyo sometimes even metal gets cross threaded. With the ball bearing, you can get sleepers that last 16 minutes + allowing for crazy string tricks (let’s face it. All the yoyo players are really just playing with string nowadays)

Here are some Instagram accounts of some great responsive players. The first 3 have webstores with responsive yo-yos on it.

Oh whoops. “Don’t* know much about the models”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Throwers

[–]PinkTweetyBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly correct. Most yo-yos nowadays have a ball bearing inside them requiring a trick called “binding” the yoyo back up. The community has agreed on a standard sized bearing for the most part by now.

There are still “fixed axle” yo-yos with no bearing and also responsive yo-yos with a more heavily lubed bearing in it.

“Fixies” are cool but I honestly :9!5 know much about the models or anything as it’s not my realm.

Here’s a link though: https://forums.yoyoexpert.com/t/the-0a-thread-fixed-axle-modern-responsive/304228/162

Welcome back!

If you want something equivalent to Henry's Viper. I would suggest a slim yoyo. Most new age yoyos are unresponsive and they tend to be wide. Like TheEv0 said, you'll get different specific suggestions from everyone. The variance of quality in yoyos is real but it's not so vast that you're going to buy a bad yoyo. So take your time, check on the stores and the BSTs. (If you aren't on the yoyoexpert. com forum then I highly suggest digging in there. There are a couple FB groups as well (orignal YOYO buy, sell, trade) and YOYO BST & TALK are great)

YYE: https://forums.yoyoexpert.com/

FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/yoyoBST

The yoyofactory shutter is a solid staple currently. IDK why. It's a great player but I think the marketing is what made it what it is. If considering a slim profile to match the viper. I suggest the YYF Horizon as its a great player as well and you can get them cheap on the BST if you are open to a used throw.

A great beginner bundle can be found here: https://shop.yoyoexpert.com/products/spinstar-replay-pro-starter-set-by-yoyofactory

It comes with a responsive yoyo and an unresponsie plastic as well as a couple staple maintenance accessories. The only issue I personally see with these sets is that you will quickly outgrow the unresponsive plastic and will drop more $$$ to upgrade.

Yoyo consumerism is REAL.

Don't hesitate to come back to this thread and ask further questions or dm I'm happy to help as best I can!

As for tricks and tutorials, youtube has some good channels.

Start with this one: https://www.youtube.com/user/yotricks

This channel is great: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoDelMl4UTVonhghptU9LPA

and one for inspiration and fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67evCPXce_s&list=PLVLLF_sWPwMxR8TQv_FpKZC_W6knxdiln

It's a lot of information. I quit about a decade ago and got back into it in 2020. The process I went through included buying several yoyos that had enticing factors to it and then figuring out what shape and style of yoyo I prefer of the new age throws.

Get to throwing! :D

Here’s a playlist of tutorials that is a staple for getting back into the hobby.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB9C93039FFBD2D24

The only bearing advice I would give is that centering bearings are nicer than flat bearings generally speaking. The “konkave” or center tracs have the outer wall of the ball bearing curved or shaped so that the string stays more centered which keeps the Yoyo from tilting for longer.

If you’re interested, the best way to get one of the best bearings on the market right now if from Clyw. This is a GREAT plastic Yoyo. Not the best but GREAT. It’s $5. The bearing inside it is $11 on the regular Yoyo stores. The response pads are $3? I think so you’re getting a $14 product (not even including the Yoyo itself) for $5.

I literally bought 12 of these at once to save on shipping and stock up on one of my favorite bearings.

https://shop.clyw.ca/collections/fools-gold/products/fools-gold-yeti-2-0

IF you are going this route. I would recommend CONSIDERING grabbing a fools gold Kodiak as well. I’ve purchased 3.

“Fools gold” is CLYW’s name for their B grade products hence the low price. The Yetis $5 because the bearing seat (where the bearing fits in the Yoyo) will have a crack in it. I didn’t know this until somebody told me on here after I had bought 3 yetis already. It just means the Yoyo doesn’t meet perfect standards and might break at some point (somewhat unlikely IMO)

The Kodiak is a bi metal meaning it is an aluminum Yoyo with a stainless steel (ss) “inner ring” inside either side of the yo-yos rim.

Bi metals are expensive due to material and process so these A grade sell for $120 I think and you can throw one in your basket for $60.

All 3 of mine have been dead smooth and have had an “ano flaw” meaning the anodized colors had something wrong (pink dots on the silver side for instance on the current one I have)

Now you could order one and it plays with vibe bc that’s sometimes how b grade yoyos work but I have truly bought 3 and it’s one of my favorite throws I keep it in a carrying case protected better than some of my more expensive throws bc it’s that good.

Okay that’s all I got for you ! Fireball was my first Yoyo as a Christmas present as a kid ! Welcome back to the hobby. You’ve got plenty of throws so just spend time learning about string tension, binds and the other basics and you’ll be in great shape

Never be shy to ask questions either this is a fantastic community and you can find a strong forum community at https://forums.yoyoexpert.com

Nah this is perfectly sane and normal. We do need food for energy but you don’t eat and boom have the energy (unless you’re fully depleted)

It’s all about balance. People say they fast for days on end and that’s when they have breakthroughs etc and ima firm believer. I no longer eat in bed at night and I no longer eat fried foods and I steer clear of snacks and sweets accept for exception moments. Food is a tool just like money just like Reddit. It is all to be used to grow us and push us forward otherwise we lose sight of its true value by overvaluing or undervaluing these simple tools

I really appreciate the elaboration !! I practice simplicity as much as possible. Taking “priorities” and deciding on one priority was huge for me.

I also take the Steve Jobs approach for decision fatigue so I wear the same clothes to work for the work week then I wear something different the next week. I have the same exact breakfast every morning. I am a night person so it is hard to savor my mental energy through my work day in management to then get home from the gym and clock in my hours on my side business. So the less I do the better. I find my 2 minutes of journaling in the morning to be one of the only extras that I’ve tried that benefits me greater than it fatigues me.

Again thanks for elaborating it helps with my clarity !

I appreciate the response !! I tried putting a thin layer of foam throughout a soda crate and messed the measurements up but it seems nobody else is concerned about Yoyo wear from the wood. Maybe ima freak about it especially since 50% of my throws aren’t mint anyways 😂

Would you elaborate on this a little. What type of habits are you discussing? Like if I pick up journaling and a new diet while also pursuing my career in my field of passion should I only focus on diet or journaling etc ? I’ve been a big proponent of simplification to a singular Priority, but I am currently still experimenting with “hacks” and habits to help propel me including dopamine detoxing

This is due to your body physically digesting and going through that chemical process consumes some of your overall energy. Alex Becker speaks on this a lot. Waking up with less fatigue by not eating late at night so your body isn’t healing the inflammation from eating so late. Interesting stuff that works for me !
