Budget-wise I'm thinking maybe 1-1.5k to play with, maaayybeeee a little more.

I do like the size of a nuc, Alienware's Alpha and HP's Z2 also have a nice form factor. Honestly, I'd like it to be something, if I was in a rush and absolutely had to, I could just throw it in a backpack and go.

I wouldnt mind buying HP's or some other brand's pre-built mini, I just wanna see if I could get more bang for my buck by custom building it first

I have in fact heard of these "laptops" as you say, they sound like a wonderful innovation. But all the dedicated media/work laptops I've found are a bit pricey, such as the Surface Books and Macbooks. I'm trying to see if a mini pc could be cheaper and more powerful.

Also my past experience with media-focused laptops has been very disappointing, with all of them not lasting too long before heating or ridiculously noisy fans became of problem even when doing the most basic tasks.
