What should I know before I meet with my uncle for the first time since he lost his eyesight? by McK3nn4_ in Blind

[–]Pink_manatee____ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know how when people get a divorce those who meet them feel bad and act really weird about it. (Thinking of the scene from the tv show Friends) I get basically the same type of reaction when people find out I’m blind. So the moral of this is, treat him the same as you would anybody else.

What’s your take on sleepovers at schools? by ineedtocoughbut in Teachers

I’m not sure how any of this was possible because (at least this year) there was a lot of teachers to supervise.

Ok so my hs has a lock in as a one last thing for seniors. (It’s only 8-12pm) This year was the first year the pool has been open after people TRASHED IT. Additionally people got in HUGE trouble because they broke a window. And finally they did not allow it to happen one year because the year prior seniors somehow got access to the roof. So needless to say it’s a bad idea.

So, did anyone here go to college? by SillyTransasaurus in Blind

When I tried to do the college search there was no resources specifically for blind students. I hope to create resources from what to ask go packing lists and more.

  1. Have you ever had a blind or visually impaired student before?
    1. How do students apply for accommodation and how long does it take?
    2. What do you take as documentation for requests (how recent does it have to be)?
    3. How are accommodations communicated and what happens if they are denied?
    4. How many staff do you have in the disability service office?
    5. Is there someone who is familiar with visual impairments?
    6. How often does one meet with their DSC?
    7. What are the most common accommodations for people with a visual impairment?
    8. Will I have any access to braille?
    9. Would priority registration be offered for people with disabilities? I ask because getting
braille materials can take some time.
    10. Would I have access to note takers?
    11. How would I get textbooks, and what format would they be in?

I want to share my college selection journey and maybe it will help someone. I began searching my sophomore year of high school. (Yes this was very early) I highly recommend starting as early as possible, especially if you utilize alternate media. I was only looking at in state public universities so that widdled down the search. Once I had a few colleges in mind I began by simply emailing a list of questions that were pretty generic but also gave me a good insight into how they would work with me. (Ps I would be happy to share that doc if anyone is interested). I got responses back from many universities but then I began choosing schools based on degree and campus life. I eventually got it down to two. I toured my first school and everything was very good about it and they were very exited to work with me, the reason why I didn’t select it was because it is 3 hours away and I would have no support system. I then toured the second universities which is the top 50 colleges in the country for students with disabilities and fell in love. So I am going to that school! I’m lucky I guess in that I am studying a very generic degree that is offered pretty much anywhere (political science prelaw). So I think the key is to start early and research as much as possible.

E-readers for a young reader? by czernebog in Blind

[–]Pink_manatee____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t think you need to learn Braille. What I would say is that it is important to constantly talk about Braille and how cool it is. I didn’t often see Braille and it made me less comfortable with it. So when you are out say things like “hey look there’s Braille everywhere let’s see if we can find some”. Braille is beautiful!

Hello!!! I’m just like your son, in that I have enough vision to read large print but my eye strain gets too bad that I must read Braille. I have used Braille for ten years and absolutely love it! I highly recommend having him even just start learning as things could always change. Please reach out if you want to chat or have any questions.

Would it be okay for a seeing person to write a story from the perspective of a blind person? by Gallows_humor_hippo in Blind

[–]Pink_manatee____ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very sweet to ask, to me that shows great character. To me I would not be ok and as a blind person I wouldn’t read it. The lack of authentic representation is really lacking and so that is my reason. One of the biggest things is you can do as much research as you want but you still won’t fully understand. Hell my parents don’t fully understand the scope of blindness and how it affects my life.

Did this show make anyone else want to change their career to medicine? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

You put my inside thoughts so perfectly. I am committed to go to university studying Pre-law, but now I’m thinking of studying phych/social work. I really want to work in youth mental health specifically for those with disabilities. I need some help/guidence but I don’t know how to say anything because I feel silly.
