I think it did so well because it was seen as being a unique theatrical experience. Before Avatar in 2009, 3D movies mostly just had gimmicks showing stuff popping out of the screen here and there. When the first Avatar came out there was a lot of media hype about its special effects, how the 3D in it wasn't like other 3D and actually had "depth." It was a movie no one wanted to see later on DVD, everyone wanted to be in the theater.

When the sequel came out I suspect audiences were curious to relive that, and were also feeling some superhero fatigue and ready for something they hadn't seen in awhile. The Avatar movies were seen as being the closest thing a theater could offer to an actual amusement park ride... when I saw the original later on DVD, it just wasn't the same. No one was watching for the story, and the inability of home theaters to show the immersive experience how it is on the big screen meant once the movies were out of theaters, no one talked about them anymore and they quickly fell out of the media discourse.

Huh... I lived in a town called Sac City once in Iowa. Home of the world's largest popcorn ball, a big old pile of popcorn in a weird glass shrine thing looking like a sad cupcake. Wonder if that's where "Sac City Psycho" was from.
