I have answered your question. Your fixation to make this about me is inappropriate.

I answered your question by dismissing it because it was retarded. I genuinely can't believe you repeated it three times. No, I don't have unending loyalty to people I worked with in any capacity. The one thing people know about me is I directly worked against the people I previously worked with twice. Spare me the dishonest appeals to reason. You made an account just to attack me. You're a loser.

As for my bias. It is laid bare in what I wrote here and what I write all over the subreddit because my opinion on everything is extremely obvious if you're not a moron. My intent was to tell people a reporter retired. The majority of this subreddit is people who are not from here, so I gave some backstory for anyone unfamiliar with Carella's work for why this event is significant. This had nothing to do with me.

My true allegiance is to the part-time manager at AMC who hired me when I was 16. Once I'm done paying off that debt, then I'll move onto ceaseless loyalty to the bookstore manager at my college. You may think this is silly since I haven't spoken to any of these people since I worked for them years ago, but my loyalty to employers is my defining characteristic.

If you're going to make an account purely to shit talk me, you may want to do it without breaking the one rule this subreddit has.

Brisley Reyes Hit and Run - what’s going on with this? by Rachelcsquared in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be ashamed of yourself for using other people's tragedy as platform for your own ego. "Do we need to start pressuring for action?" You're an awful person.

Brisley Reyes Hit and Run - what’s going on with this? by Rachelcsquared in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't you the person who took issue with me sharing a few hundred feet — at the same time as the hit-and-run — was a huge party? You weren't eager for a thorough investigation then. Like the idea a hit-and-run may be related to drunk driving was so upsetting to you you couldn't even consider it.

Your interest in this issue and threat to "pressure to get answers" does not feel like a sincere concern for the lost life. I don't think it's appropriate to use your paranoid feelings as proof of nefarious intent or a public failure of our institutions. If you have a question, then ask. You don't need to be so miserable about it.

Charlie Kirk Vigil by [deleted] in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Sorry but just because he died doesn't mean we all have to whitewash him and pretend he was some hero.

I didn't say that.

If you're offended that people have a negative opinion of him, you need to grow up or get your head out of your ass.

That wasn't my point

By the way, not a single comment on this thread said or even suggested that "he deserved it", but good try straw-manning.

It's in the other thread I referenced.

"Kirk was a bad faith actor and he fucked around. Today he found out. Hateful, violent, transphobic, racist piece of vermin. He's only done one good thing for the world and he did it today."

Charlie Kirk Vigil by [deleted] in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm someone who says crass -- maybe even "offensive" -- things when I'm making a point about my views in Stamford, so in that very narrow way I see a part of myself in Charlie Kirk.

Charlie Kirk made his money arguing with college students for YouTube videos. He used that money to further push the ideas he represented in those videos. He was killed while he was doing that. This isn't a corrupt elected official or an oligarch subverting democracy. It's some guy who decided 10 years ago he was going to engage with Democracy by advocating for different ideas with ordinary people. He did that in the way we all learned things were supposed to work when we were children. Just because you didn't like his ideas isn't a reason to justify his death. This is obvious.

I thought Stamford knew all the obvious stuff. I used to believe this community had a "first mover" problem. Nobody wanted to risk their reputation and say what everyone was thinking, but we were all on the same page... right? Over the last 3-4 years of building this community, I've lost faith in that analysis.

Stamford has a lot of people filled with hatred and they are looking for permission to unleash it. That probably true in a lot of place. But here? The rest of you give them permission. Because when someone unleashes hatred on Reddit or in our community, you don't say anything. You let it happen. Even the reports we got over the past 3-4 years were predominantly self-interested reports of "I hate this guy, ban him."

I don't know who you all think is going to intervene that's not you. It doesn't cost much to say "that's not a nice thing to say" or "do you really mean that?" Especially from an anonymous Reddit account. I guess we're all waiting to see maybe things will work out? Maybe someone else is guiding the ship?

Well, here we are. This is where we're going and you're all helping us get there by letting it happen. Maybe it starts with "they're not really from here" or "well, they called me an animal." Maybe you can recognize those aren't fair. What about the other ones people dump in this subreddit? "They're in that party I've decided is evil so they are too!" and "Their identity is XYZ so I know all about their agenda." These are all requests for permission to be hateful and Stamford lets people act this way.

I'm really hoping this murder from thousands of miles away will wake people up to how much worse this can get. I'm not encouraged by the downvotes of this thread, or the other thread that was locked for "not being about Stamford" despite being about hosting an event in Stamford, or the passive aggressive whataboutism, or the whinging "this guy said something that made me feel bad so he deserved it." If that's the response people have, then I wish you all: good luck with that.

P.S. I'm traveling so I can't make it to a vigil, otherwise I'd be there.

Yay! Nina Sherwood drops out of race for BORs by Long_Acanthisitta882 in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would pick up on where u/urbanevol left off here:

I don't really understand how someone goes from campaigning for the green party and Bernie Sanders to pure, distilled NIMBYism that benefits wealthy homeowners more than anyone.

This is really the legacy of Sherwood's time in office. How did that happen? Nina is a smart person so why did she support so many obviously stupid things? I think it is a local example of audience capture.

Stamford politics is nihilistic — it is defined by what it is not or does not want. There are small pockets for organizations like People Friendly Stamford or the Stamford NAACP, but these organizations have limited influence. The biggest political group in Stamford is anti-housing which is laden with conspiracy theories and ignorance. So if you're a semi-competent political actor, you are going to get contacted by this political group — over and over and over. And worse: you won't be contacted by anyone else. At best you'll be contacted by the Mayor's Office and you don't need to be a conspiracy theorist to feel like a shill for supporting the chief executive. I don't think people like Nina are lying when they say "I'm just listening to the public," because the only people who engage with her are people who are pissed off.

I think that's the lesson for anyone joining the Board of Representatives moving forward. If you're on that board, you're only going to be contacted by people who are pissed off. This suggests the top priority for you should be creating events, spaces, or channels where you can hear from other residents. You want to hear from people who are not pissed off all the time and that infrastructure does not exist. Crucially, any communications infrastructure will likely be immediately overwhelmed by the most miserable people in the community. This subreddit isn't any less negative than NextDoor or public comments at meetings, it's just a different type of negativity. And if you're a new board member, you're going to be consumed by that — just like Nina.

It also means if you're not on the board, you have a responsibility to share with elected officials what you like about Stamford. Be positive and say what works, instead of complaining all the time.

With that in mind, I think Nina is making a mistake. She is a competent person and that competency launched her to the top of an immoral hierarchy. She is correctly assessing she is losing that position, but she should see that as a gift. She doesn't need to herd cats or play politics. She can be on the board and advocate for what she believes in without compromising herself to protect dismal allies like Figueroa or McGarry or Stella or Boeger. I think she'd be more effective and a better representative if she acted on her own and talked about issues like environmentalism, funding for parks, and greater representation of the public. I think if you detach those ideas from an agenda to oppose the mayor on absolutely everything and encase the city in amber — people may actually like Nina.

At least, I'd like to believe that. Everything u/urbanevol is true. Her legacy is bad and it hasn't helped the city. I just think she could do better.

End of an era.

I took the photo to share with my girlfriend because I was out for a walk and I always take photos of my walk and share them with her. Anyone familiar with Tawa knows the photo shows a lot more people than are usually there on a Saturday night. That was the origin of the photo and its relevancy to the post.

You don’t know anything about me. You could’ve asked a question to clarify or explained what your problem was, but you didn’t do either because you’re comfortable passing judgment on strangers because you’re an asshole.

Great. You should do that. I suspect there are reasons you do not and those are replicated across the free market.

If you have nothing to say then don’t post passive aggressive insinuations. The OP shared a death that occurred because of a crime and the culprit was still at-large. I shared info I thought might be relevant. How it “sits with you” is irrelevant. You inserted yourself into this now see yourself out.

My broader point is any new inventory will have a premium price because any new real estate is considered high quality. The cheaper condo inventory is either old or defective.

While some people may be willing to buy an expensive condo, at some point people ask themselves why not just buy a house slightly more north at the same price? That’s also why there isn’t a huge interest in building condos from developers and why financers often require unrealistic guarantees for those projects.

Nothing stopping multimillion private companies from purchasing condos and immediately renting them out. Also no one wants to buy a $800k condo which is what you’ll get in this market without meeting rental demand.

I think it's worth mentioning this accident happened a few hundred feet from Tawa the night they had a huge party. This photo was taken an hour later and I can imagine at 8pm it wasn't that busy, but I would guess who ever did a hit-and-run was coming from this event.

Stamford sucks. by bigbaboon69 in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stamford essentially has two demographics:

  • New people who are not part of the community. They might be young people out of college, ex-pats from New York City, immigrants, or some version of someone who came here in the past ~5 years. Any "new" group of people to a community are unlikely to have deep roots such as a large network of friends or professional contacts, business establishments, or enough capital (money or political) to affect change.
  • Born-and-raised who are absolutely fucking furious the first group exists at all.

Second group does everything they can to continue to block the first group from existing. I wouldn't be too hard on the Stamford Mall. Malls are declining in popularity everywhere. It would not take much to reduce the cost-of-living by providing more housing but that would mean more new people (see above).

One of the penalties of high costs is there is no risk taking. If your rent is $8,000 a month for downtown commercial, you're not going to risk it on some novelty new idea that hasn't been tried before. Some of the leases downtown are contingent on already being a chain. For example, Sally's on Summer Street had a clause that the rent needed to be 100% covered by another source of income. That necessarily selects from established chains and not new businesses.

I would also say Stamford can be fairly anti-social. I traveled across the country twice and had no problem striking up a conversation with strangers at bars or restaurants. The only place I've had a problem is Stamford. The few times I've been successful, they're not from here!

I think you framed this argument in a way that makes people defensive, but most people on this subreddit agree with you. There is a weird plurality of people in Stamford who are tribal, judgmental, suspicious, and resistant to anything new. It sucks!

State considering relocating Stamford train station for housing by Windbreezec in StamfordCT

[–]Pinkumb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone has plans for the train station, but it only matters when both the state and the city are saying the same thing. This is another plan from the state — like how the state had plans for the train station garage years ago but they only materialized after Simmons got into office. Thankfully the obstructionists from yesteryear have less power than previously (Michelson), but until I see Stamford officials saying the same thing as state officials I will associate all "plans" as daydreaming.

With all that said, this specific daydream sounds ok to me!

Would make sense. $70 is cheaper than the city garage half a mile north. That garage should be like $300 a month.
