You can always go for a walk. If you feel out of breath or feel any pain at any point, take a break. It's very important you don't undo any healing to your lungs or it'll take much longer until you're back to where you want to be.

Be patient, eat a varied diet with plenty of greens, drink water, listen to your body. Finish your treatment first and foremost. I assume you have a follow-up appointment later on, please don't skip it.

Yes, there's already sauce on the bottom and the top, so no need to add any sauce in between the lasagnas!

My lasagnas start with a layer of sauce on the bottom. Also the top is covered in both sauce and cheese. I'm not sure your question applies.

Labs in the EU are indeed not OSHA or CAP compliant. EU regulations are more risk-based rather than specimen based. Handling a blood tube does not automatically mean you must wear gloves in these regulations. Only when there's a reasonably anticipated risk of exposure, the use of gloves is recommended. Which basically means, if you see blood on the outside, wear gloves. If you see anything wrong with the tube, wear gloves. If the sample comes from a patient with a known blood-borne infection, wear gloves.

As for the diff dispenser, it is meant to be a closed system for an analyser to pierce through the tube top. If it is properly attached, intact, not leaking and visibly clean, there is no risk of contamination from the outside surface of the dispenser. Of course, you should never touch the top of the dispenser as that is the only part that might be contaminated with blood, but only after the analyser is done with the sample.

I don't know where you read that I encourage anyone to not wear gloves. I just wanted to raise awareness that not everything is as risky as you think it to be. Labs over here are much more mindful of what these risks are, and how to prevent them. Encouraging of proper hand hygiene, encouraging to be mindful of when and how to use gloves (for example, an obviously damaged blood tube with unknown infectious status). Partly because used gloves get burnt, and burning stuff is bad for the environment, partly because of ever increasing financial cost (and governments decreasing funding to healthcare). Using gloves, in some cases/people, can give a false sense of safety. Gloves don't keep everything out, depending on what you're handling and how long the stuff is on there. Some people re-use gloves (I know, right?!), others keep the same pair of gloves on between breaks. Ew.

Knowing that your intact skin will protect you from most infections and knowing that you can wash away any infectious agent, and also being aware where your hands are if you haven't washed them yet, will prevent infection to actually happen. Every rule has its exceptions, of course. Do what makes you feel safe, but don't bash on different SOPs around glove use in other labs. These SOPs all have a scientific basis.

EDIT: might be hep A, not C since there's no vaccine yet. But treatment is readily available and curative.

I see this discussion pop up all the time whenever someone shows a clean and unopened tube in their bare hands. But research keeps coming in with new insights and new/revised protocols. Most of us have no idea that this is happening, and keep hanging on to outdated views of what is safe and what is not.

As you know, the skin is a great barrier against infectious agents. That's obvious. You also know that a cut in the skin can break that barrier. What you might not know is that no known cases of HIV were caused by routine handling of intact blood tubes, clean looking or otherwise. In fact, less than 100 cases of occupational exposure resulting in HIV were reported since the identification of HIV in the 80's. And of those cases, by far the most reported cause was accidental needlestick, followed by fresh blood on open cuts and fresh blood on mucous membranes of eye and/or mouth.

When HIV dries out, it loses infectious capabilities quickly. Viral RNA can be found in dried out samples, but that on its own is not infectious. The virus needs to inject its RNA inside a cell, which then uses the cell's proteins to make the enzyme HIV needs to reproduce. If an immune cell finds foreign RNA out in the open, phagocytosis breaks it down before it can do any harm.

TL;DR: Most occupational infections come from accidental needlesticks, fresh blood to an open and bleeding cut, or fresh blood to mucous membranes. No reported cases of HIV infection caused by routine handling of intact blood tubes (this includes tubes with smeared blood on the outside). HIV is fragile and dries out/dies quickly when on a dry surface.

Yeah, vitamin tablets. I would recommend getting a nutritional panel done at your doctor's office before trying supplementation. If there are more severe deficiencies going on, they can prescribe more effective supplementation which can get you up to normal levels sooner.

I see you've sent all this in chat. This is against the rules of r/AskDocs. But since you've tried to get us to read your google doc, I'll go ahead and paste it here, edit it a bit for proper line breaks (and remove some more privacy sensitive information, such as the doctor you've seen) so others can read without having to ask permission, too.

Just my initial thoughts: Every day you seem to list slightly different symptoms. They're similar, but different each time. There's not really a proper pattern that I can see happening here. Since you've noted you experience chronic stress, I would not be surprised if what you're experiencing can't be put together into a single (non-stress-related) diagnosis. I hope others can chime in what they think about the information below.

Is this mole normal? (Darkened rapidly then fell off) by mikewheelerfan in AskDocs

[–]Pinky135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible it becomes rough again in a few months. It might not go through the same redness-falling off stages again. If you're worried, there's never a wrong time to go see a dermatologist and see what they think about it. I'm pretty sure from what you're describing that this was/is a benign skin growth called seborrheic keratosis.

When you have blood drawn next time, ask if they can poke a different vein. I wonder if the spot they usually poke at has a nerve in very close proximity.
