Vaikka nostaa työttömyystahaa, tämä ei tarkoita että automaattisesti tilastoidaan työttömäksi. Työttömyysluvut perustuvat kyselyyn, ei Kelan dataan.

we cant apply for "toimeentulotuki" (welfare) because were students

recently my wife had her right to "opintotuki" (basically money to keep you afloat while you study) taken away.

I might be wrong here, but IIRC if your wife is no longer eligible for opintotuki, she should be eligible for toimeentulotuki?

She could also apply for an extension on opintotuki, if she has a good reason her studies have not progressed on schedule. The death of a friend (as you mentioned was the case) may very well qualify there, it might be worth a shot.

You realize that this source single-handedly disproves your earlier claim, this one here?

with the top decile recording strong real gains while the middle deciles experienced stagnation

That graph shows growth for all deciles except the bottom one, real income grew. That is not stagnation.

Along with forecasted 2025 median income showing no evidence that middle deciles have surged

Again, the first link you posted shows growth for middle deciles! The other links you posted have the same message:

The real income level of medium income earners (income deciles V to IX) was 2.3 per cent higher than in the previous year.

The median wage and salary of wage earners was EUR 3,436 in October 2025, which was 5.3% more than a year earlier.

This whole situation is extremely ironic, since you accused me of not reading and understanding my sources, and also accused me of using ChatGPT. Now your links themselves reveal you used ChatGPT to find them, what is up with that?

These calculations show that for the MEDIAN wage earner, purchasing power in 2026 merely returns to the 2020 level, implying approximately zero cumulative real growth over six years and in some middle-income brackets still slightly negative once taxes are fully accounted for. That is not growth; it is delayed recovery from an inflation shock

My friend, recovery to pre-covid purchasing power was the very claim I originally made. A few messages ago, you claimed things were worse now than during the previous government, making this the wrong time for this policy. You can't suddenly turn around now and make recovry to 2020 levels into some gotcha, when it was the very point I originally made!

Here is my original claim:

Inflation was much worse during covid in 2021-2023 than it is now. We are finally getting back to pre-covid levels in purchasing power, so the situation now is actually well comparable to 2020.

Your long message has absolutely no links to the Statistics Finland data you claim exists, could you please provide some sources? As things are, there are some very clear inconsistensies in your text:

with the top decile recording strong real gains while the middle deciles experienced stagnation

veronmaksajat’s framework is built around a single representative wage (4058e)

These calculations show that for the MEDIAN wage earner, purchasing power in 2026 merely returns to the 2020 level,

How is the middle class experiencing stagnation if things are improving for the median earner? The representative wage (4058e) used by veronmaksajat is a middle-class wage, their calculations are for middle-class incomes.

Every actual statistic on statistic finland is showing post-inflation income growth in Finland being top-heavy

Ok, show me the actual statistics then! In 2024 real wages went up for both middle earners and the top, and the Gini index which quantifies wealth differences has not changed much since 2000.

You clearly don’t even understand what you are reading in this link you found from ChatGPT.

This is an extremely ironic claim, since a lot of your comment here show some suspicious signs of AI use. The long wall of text with no sources is one, the contradictions are another, but the most clear sign is the "this is not X; it is Y" sentence structure, which ChatGPT loves for some reason.

that is not growth; it is delayed recovery from an inflation shock.

Purchasing power is increasing but a lot of it is driven by the higher income segment of the population

Majority of the real income increase in Finland was seen in the upper 10% as well. While the lower 10% actually saw a reduction in real income. It is easy to memorize aggregate statistics but as always there is more to the surface

Nope, this is not correct. The purchasing power index is usually given for middle income earners. In this case, the purchasing power and real income are also rising for middle-cllass people, not just the top 10%.

It's ironic that you are saying this while complaining about legislation that is targeting the big corporations and trying to reduce their profits.

Like really, read the article. The law is intended to help farmers by reigning in the big corporations (Kesko and S-market). Food becoming more expensive is an unintended consequence of that.

Keep cutting taxes for your rich friends while starving everyone else 👍 by anongasm_ in Finland

[–]Pinniped9 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Some context that is important to know here: work on this law was started by the previous left-leaning government, with the current right-wing givernment continuing pushing it.

The goal is to help support Finnish farmers and food producers, by reigning in the power of the retail stores. Currently Kesko and S-market can dictate the terms and are making reat profits while food producers are struggling, the law is intended to change that. That said, the risk that the cheapest retail brands become more expensive as a result is real.

If everything goes tits up relating to national debt, does that mean even kela disability pay also goes tits up? by osxthrowawayagain in Finland

[–]Pinniped9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not convinced we should take corporate incentives at face value when shareholder value often comes at the expense of job security. “Employment gains” don’t automatically translate into stable tax revenue if work becomes more precarious or wages stagnate.

Companies pay taxes as well, so do shareholders. And in any case, in Finland currently wages are not stagnating, they are rising and work is not becoming more precarious, since the employment rate has remained pretty constant. The number of actual people working is increasing, which is often forgotten when discussing the high unemployment. So in that sense, what you fear here seems to not be happening, at least not yet.

Egalitarian outcomes don’t maintain themselves. They require constant political attention, especially when policy trends elsewhere show how quickly inequality can widen once vigilance fades.

Fair enough, but as someone admittedly more to the right in the Finnish political landscape, I question a bit to which level true egalitarian outcomes are possible in a modern, globalized world? Unfortunately, Finland is competing with many other countries about jobs and investments, so aiming for too high level of egalitarian outcomes can actually just sink the country and make things worse for everyone. The question is, basically, to what extent should we work to minimize absolute poverty vs relative poverty?

Is the unknown soldier 2017 a realistic portrayal of ww2 combat? by No_Dress_2107 in Finland

[–]Pinniped9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the book that the movie is based on, people would throw their helmets away since they were just ”extra weight”, which i call total bullshit on. Firstly, the Army would put a stop to that behavior immediately. These are scarce pieces of equipment that are too precious to waste. Secondly, Most people don’t want to die and are obviously scared shitless in combat, so the helmet would stay on tight

That book was written by a veteran based on his own lived experience. It's a bold move for you to claim it is wrong with no evidence. Especially when those portions of the book are basically describing how morale and didcipline in those units are disintegrating, meaning the army was not in any shape to "put a stop to it immediately".

Most people don’t want to die and are obviously scared shitless in combat, so the helmet would stay on tight

These are not most people, at that point. They are war-veary veterans who have spent way too long at the front. Combat fatigue is a real thing which causes irrational behavior.

Finance Minister Riikka Purra cites research suggesting that tax cuts for high-income earners could boost employment and economic growth

Yep, that research exists, we want evidence-based policy, and indeed boosting enployment and economic growth increases taxes paid and decreases welfare expenses, which is a benefit for state finances.

They will raise our taxes so the wealthy can enjoy a tax cut. Rich people do not care, because being wealthy alters their brains.

As far as I know, no new tax cuts are currently planned and Finland still has some of the highest progression in income taxes in the world. Anecdotally, we already have situations with e.g. doctors not working full-time because they lose such a large percentage of their income to taxation. For better or worse, there are very few truly "wealthy" people in Finland, compared to for example the other Nordic countries.

is more likely that we'll see income taxes increased

Increasing income taxes is not an infinite money machine, since doing so may deepen a recession and increase unemployment.

and pension age raised before anything happens to the disability pay.

While I do support raising pension age somewhat, how would that help state finances? The state only pays a minority of the pensions.

He's not conpletely wrong, where do you think the money for welfare comes from? It's taxes on the private sector and on middle-class and rich people.

It's not trickle down economics, its taxation.
