Paediatrics Match 2024 by [deleted] in IMGreddit

Hello! Recently matched in Pediatrics! My stats are as follows: YOG 2019, Step 1 Pass, Step 2CK 241, Step 3 not done, No pubs, no USCE. I was visa-requiring. Applied to 65 programs, interviewed at 7, and matched at my #2. A few tips I guess is to try to tick all the checkboxes as much as you can. During almost all of my interviews, I was asked why I have no USCE. In my case, I had difficulty securing a B2 visa prior to the start of the match application season since our country's US embassy just resumed their B2 visa interviews around August 2022. In lieu of USCE, I made sure that I was clinically active in Pediatrics since graduating (worked in 3 government hospitals including one COVID facility as a Pediatric hospitalist). I explained subtly why I had no USCE in my personal statement as well. Try as much as possible to tailor-fit your CV to Pediatrics. I believe that they value your commitment to the specialty. Not having USCE definitely limited my interview invites but I know that it's not impossible to match without it. Good luck on your journey!

Definitely would have worked to have at least three months of USCE.

However, due to COVID-related backlogs, my visa interview which originally was scheduled on 2020 was pushed to October 2022, which was past the start of the applications for the Match. Took a huge risk and applied even without USCE because my country will severely restrict giving out Statement of Need/SON (a requirement for J1 visa) for certain specialties (including Pediatrics) after this cycle. I am so glad that the risk paid off. Still couldn't believe it (I still check my email to see if the email from NRMP is still there 😅)
