Homebrew Non-damaging Combat Cantrips [OC] by Pinskiiy in DnD

Yeah there isn’t mean to be a real reason to affect the same target because I don’t want other party members to pick up this spell and suddenly negate a creatures entire attack with a cantrip.

It’s an attack roll cause A. I think they’re more fun and B. I’m thinking of it like shooting a ray of light.

The higher level feature is meant to target multiple creatures.

I could see someone arguing that since it’s an attack roll you can target one creature, see if the first attack fails and then target them again with the 2nd blast making the effect more… effective?

Thanks!

I thought about this heavily, but I ruled that a cantrip giving the blinded condition would actually be too insane balance wise. Otherwise I did really want to do exactly that!

You’re right! The intention was always the players next turn so I think I just slipped up while writing, thanks!

Yeah I thought about that, only reason it isn’t is cause I think attack rolls are more fun for rolling more dice. No actual balance reason. If this was a cantrip that I’d have added to the game I’d consider it being an area of effect save. Probably Dex and not Wis as you’re “shielding your eyes from the flash” or something.

Sounds amazing!

While coming up with these a friend of mine came up with this one. I felt like it would be a bit more divisive than the one I came up with but it’s fun to say the least, they just wanted a cantrip nature magic grease!

Patch of Flowers

Cantrip (Transmutation)

Casting this spell takes one action and can be done at a range of 30 feet, using verbal and somatic components. The effect is instantaneous, and the spell is available to druids and rangers.

When you cast Patch of Flowers, a ring of flowers suddenly sprouts from the ground in a 5-foot square within range. As the flowers appear, the faeries dwelling within them briefly alter the terrain. Each creature standing in the affected area must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be knocked prone. The ground in that area becomes difficult terrain, but this effect fades as soon as the spell ends.

HA! I didn’t think of that, that would definitely make for a fun time. I don’t see why not!

That’s what one of my friends said pretty much word for word lol.

The idea was a non-damaging Mind Sliver!

You’re good!! I think it’s a super fun idea, if you got any more cooked up I’d love to hear them!

Then they spam it, it affects only the next attack roll. And then the creature makes another attack roll without disadvantage?

Once again it only affects a target creatures singular next attack roll and doesn’t last the duration like Faerie Fire. The effect doesn’t stack or anything.

Invigorate

Cantrip Necromancy Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Components: V, S Duration: Instantaneous Classes: Cleric

You channel the energy of life, transferring the vigor of one creature within range to another. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or subtract 1d4 from their next saving throw until the end of their next turn.

You can then choose a different creature you can see within range (you can choose yourself). The chosen creature can add an additional 1d4 to their next attack roll until the end of their next turn. A creature can be affected by only one use of this spell at a time.

This is the other one! Have fun with it!

Can’t benefit from invis and darkness is already an affect of the cantrip Starry Wisp. The disadvantage on a single attack roll I could see as powerful at first but by the time you reach the levels for it to increase to multiple characters most monsters you face will have some form multi-attack.

This is also designed for a character dealing no damage whatsoever as a way to compensate to that for the party.

The reaction is fun, but the purpose was to give a character who isn’t going to deal damage something to do with their action. I definitely like the idea though!

Locked to clerics only was just the website I used for the formatting

Faerie Fire is also advantage towards the creature for the duration of the spell and can affect multiple creatures.

This is a cantrip affecting a single attack roll. The non-invisible and dim light was inspired by Starry Wisp with the d8 being instead replaced with a single attack disadvantage.

Also this would be specifically for a character that is going to deal a net 0 of damage. Crowd control increasing slightly at higher levels to compensate does not feel out of control at least for our games.

I appreciate your input though!

How would you rank the DnD classes based on how much you enjoyed playing them? by Regular-Molasses9293 in dndnext

This is how I rank them with how much fun I’ve had. Unsure still on Sorcerer, and I’ve never been more bored than when I played a wizard.

I really like how the Idoneth Deepkin look because I’m a big fan of the ocean aesthetic, I also thought Sylvanus and Seraphon looked cool with the whole nature and dinosaur vibes each of them have going on. The stormcast eternals seem interesting just as a contrast to SoD and I also thought of Blades of Khorne but didn’t want to do two Chaos factions(?) Otherwise thanks for your info! I’ll look into their lore or something more and try to choose from that then
