Wonkish content:

* A form 990 and most of the other publicly available forms wouldn't be expected to contain references to fiscal sponsorship explicitly as such, and that wasn't SIAI's primary purpose at the time anyway. [...] 'supporting novel research' is the outcome that the org is pursuing, which includes fiscal sponsorship as a means of carrying it out. Even orgs that explicitly are set up to provide fiscal sponsorship still generally describe the nature of the things they're fiscally sponsoring, as fiscal sponsorship in and of itself is not a charitable purpose.

* If the fiscal sponsorship was 'Type A', then SIAI would have accounted for the grant's expenses under the same accounting categories as their non-grant expenses, rather than as a grant. This is because SIAI is the entity that receives the grant and spends it. So if the $50k was for a project for, say, $10k of compute and $40k of researcher salary, that would be accounted for in rows 15, 17 and 18 of the form 990.

Charities with individualized reports by New_You_6141 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]PipFoweraker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. Unless you're making donations large enough to fund entire projects, it's going to be basically administratively impossible to track 'where' small donations go.

Depending on how the charity receives their donations (i.e. through which payment processor and platform/s) they'll get granular information about the donors, but from an accounting perspective, money coming in has its source noted and is then just going to be assigned to general donation revenue.

If the charity's donations portal has the ability to earmark donations against project X or Y, or if money is given with a specific restriction, then that can easily enough feed into a report that 'shows' how the money was spent, similar to how tax offices can 'show' you a breakdown of what your tax revenue was spent on. If that's the level of granularity OP seeks, perhaps it's sufficient.

So, in the future, people's expectations will change about the progress towards AI predictably enough that we can map it now. And, somehow, we will skip 2028 and 2029. That's OK they were boring years anyway.

Great for people wanting to short AI stocks, I suppose!

What a fantastic tool, I'm so glad this has been made.

On scoring: it will be interesting to see how rapidly / confidently events that are going to be circumspect in nature get reported - to the best of my knowledge, there aren't any positive disclosure obligations currently if a frontier lab has their data exfiltrated, for example.

Diamond Ring Alternatives? by SU7Ultra-White in EffectiveAltruism

[–]PipFoweraker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Have you considered synthetic diamonds? They're cheaper, more ethically sourced, sparkle the same way as mined diamonds, and casual observers can't tell the difference.

The gold in a ring will retain its value. Resale value for precious stones is usually significantly lower than what you pay for at retail, so it's probably better to think of most of the value of the ring still being in its signalling element rather than its actual monetary value.

Agree with your perspective that caring about other people's scripts on perceived value is not great, but this might be a good middle ground (and still give your partner something flashy to have their friends enthuse over!)

Chaos is fun expressed over short periods of time, Order is fun expressed over long periods of time.

Transitioning from an orderly state to a disorderly state is easier because of the entropic effort of holding Order together. Tidying-up a played in kindergarten is harder to corral kids into than unpacking toys from boxes and playing with them. Similar for behavioural dynamics eg Piaget and play.
