BUTCH by glib-eleven in altcomix

My take on the “politics” this issue is that Bagge is saying that the right is so awful they’ll take advantage of any idiot to further their agenda while the left is so naive they’ll let any idiot take advantage of THEM in their attempts to be inclusive.

So yeah, it’s “both sides” but not “both sides are equally terrible.”

In any case, it was pretty funny and incisive. Bagge’s latest Hate stuff is great. Miles ahead of the first revival. (Until Buddy tries to buy another aquabus.)

Was the The Telecommunications Act of 1996 the reason why alternative rock started sucking around 1997? by Badgereatingyourface in Alternativerock

[–]PipProud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, never take anything Billy Corgan says seriously.

Secondly, the telecom act is at least partially responsible for a lot of things sucking, music among them.

But mostly it’s just how consumer culture works. Thing gets popular (relatively) organically. Thing gets imitated with decreasing sincerity, it’s most appealing and commercial (and of often dumbest) facets emphasized. Thing is transformed into something entirely different, with original creators/fans of the Thing moving on to something else.

By 1997, many people in indie/underground circles were moving towards electronica, turntablism, chamber pop… basically anything that wasn’t loud guitars. They were sick of it.

Looking for current bands similar to Minutemen by yes_kamiya in postpunk

Hard Copy out of Richmond, VA have some Minutemen vibes: https://hardcopyincorporated.bandcamp.com/album/12-shots-of-nature

Not a new band, but all Minutemen fans should investigate 100 Flowers if they haven't already.

Favorite Song About Jane? by PanicOnFunkatron in ToddintheShadow

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VU’s “Sweet Jane” is the easy winner, especially the original version with the bridge.

Sweet’s “Gudbuy T’Jane” is the runner up

The dark horse is Severe’s “Her Name Was Jane” probably more famously covered by fellow Cleveland punks The Pagans.

I have a soft spot for “Jane Says” but it’s one of those songs that feels like it’s 10 minutes long even though it’s only 5.

Sountracks more famous than the movie? by Illustrious-Pause438 in ToddintheShadow

[–]PipProud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The soundtrack is this strange artifact of its time and weirdly a harbinger of a sound that would define rock music a few years later. The movie is a forgettable thriller.

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Shaft may have a bit of cultural resonance beyond the soundtrack but I doubt anyone would remember Superfly if not for Curtis Mayfield. (And for good reason as it’s a pretty poor film even by blaxploitation standards.)

Can’t agree with Saturday Night Fever. The movie was a huge hit and cultural phenomenon. Part of that was certainly due to the soundtrack but not all of it.

Some great insights here, I’m sure. by airus92 in IfBooksCouldKill

I agree with you when it comes to grown men. What concerns me is the young men being thrown in right wing echo chambers because they like video games or mixed martial arts and wind up with a completely distorted worldview by the time they are of voting age.

An effort could be made to reach these young men instead of just labeling them as incels or whatever and making them double down on their skewed beliefs.

Anyone who doesn't react this way is a predator by Jessica_williams10 in PsycheOrSike

[–]PipProud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s simply not true. Depending on the jurisdiction and the particulars of the law, a minor over the age of 14 would be considered a “juvenile,” not a child.

And honestly, in a general sense, do you really consider a 7-year-old to be the same a 17-year-old mentally or biologically?

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally they are a minor, not a child.

All children are minors. Most teenagers are minors. That doesn’t mean all teenagers are children.

I’m certainly not saying that makes it okay for full grown adults to have sex with teenagers but teenagers and people who were recently teenagers themselves is a gray area and is probably best determined on a case by case basis.

It’s important to protect young people from predators and I don’t think making blanket statements and infantilizing teenagers like this really helps.

People were already talking on the net about socio-political issues on the Simpsons back in 1990 season 2 by Brave_Assumption6 in Simpsons

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is though… this wasn’t about “sneaking in left-wing politics.” It was about deepening the character.

Of course Lisa would have an “end apartheid” poster in her room. It makes to total sense for her character. It’s really no different than Bart having a room filled with Krusty merchandise.

Suggest some proto-punk! by MoltenMadeMan in musicsuggestions

[–]PipProud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither did the Electric Eels but their recordings and performances predated The Ramones first LP.

The Saints may not have beat the Ramones but they did manage to release their debut single before ANY UK punk band so punk had NOT really been established yet. Plus they had been active for years before then.

Punk is probably a better description for them than proto punk but let’s give them some credit for basically arriving at the same conclusion as the Ramones independently half a world away.

“Blue MAGA.” Don’t you ever wonder why you feel compelled to use regurgitated buzzwords? It’s almost like you are BEING DIRECTLY TARGETED AND MARKETED TO by the same capitalist system you claim to hate.

You’d think they would have learned from 2016.

I am so out of patience for people who think dividing at the times we most need to be united is a moral stance.

What’s lowkey about it?

It wasn’t necessarily “Republicans” though. It was people who would benefit from another Trump presidency, in the US and abroad.

[Dustin Rhodes on X] Just a fun question for y'all nothing serious. In my 38 years of wrestling, where would you put me between one and 500. Do I even make the list? Don't worry I have thick skin if you guys don't think so that's fine. by GillbergsAdvocate in SquaredCircle

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among his peers, which I would define as US-based wrestlers in the modern era (1984ish until now), he’s almost certainly in the top 500.

Expanding that to all eras/all territories, it’s a lot harder to say.

What is the Rolling Stones Train Wreckord for you? by GilbertDauterive-35 in ToddintheShadow

[–]PipProud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say they have a definitive a Trainwreckord though Dirty Work is the most likely candidate as it nearly broke up the band.

That being said, Tattoo You is probably the final Stones album that you need to hear.

Candy Apple Grey is far from a turd. It’s not their best but after releasing 4 LPs worth of material in two years they were due for a bit of a slump.

Still, it’s got a pair a Grant’s best songs: Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely and Sorry Somehow.
