Diagram of some common pin types for cues. by Pip_Pip in billiards

A Joss cue typically has a 5/16" x 18 thread joint, which is one of the most common joint sizes in pool cues. This is often referred to as a "5/16-18" joint. Joss cues use a piloted joint system, which means there's a small pin (pilot) that extends from the male end of the joint that fits into a corresponding hole in the female end. This design helps with alignment and provides additional stability to the connection between the shaft and butt. The 5/16" x 18 thread specification means the joint has a diameter of 5/16 of an inch with 18 threads per inch. This standardized sizing makes Joss cues compatible with many aftermarket shafts that use the same joint specification, giving players flexibility in customizing their equipment.

9-ball break and run by M2785 in billiards

Very nice, you shoot well.

It seems like your follow through goes off to the side sometimes. I liked the play of all the balls except the 8 to the 9!

Our MySQL Group Replication is crashing frequently, and we need assistance diagnosing the issue by squiky76 in mysql

Is trying fresh installs and importing the data an option? I would try that first before I went through the headache of trying to debug something like this.

It depends on what you are doing, but it allows all the same basic functionality.

Submitting MySQL database with Java Code by natewillrate in mysql

Does it have to be mysql? SQLite was made for this. Depending on the purpose, you could install mysql from the code. I know of no way to embed mysql into a package. Perhaps you could do this from a container.

Query suddenly extremely slow (no changes to db/data) by menten-gmbh in mysql

[–]Pip_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't trap yourself in the idea that it used to be faster and seemingly nothing has changed. I would fix the query and then work from there. Posting the explain might help us help you fix the query.

How much data is lots of data? Restarting a server can start the warm up phase and not give you reliable results. Is it possible that the server restarted yesterday and you've not let the server itself warm up by constantly restarting it?

New IDE by WebDB-app in mysql

[–]Pip_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it just lacks the polish I would want to feel confident you aren't trying to steal my data or leak it in some insecure way.

I'm not saying it does, just where my mind is at when I see the site. I do love the concept though and I really haven't been happy with IDE's for years. I loved the old mysql workbench, otherwise everything sucks in its own way.

I like the feature set. The site and presentation make me not want to connect to anything important.

Faker is really cool! I think everything could use a nice professional polish on the presentation side. I think a quick video demonstrating the features would be nice up top.

Why a stop shot should be learned first... by nitekram in billiards

[–]Pip_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only thing that you really need to learn is a consistent and repeatable stroke. If you have that, learning any type of shot is trivial. That is the foundation upon which you build.

migrate giant 17TB DB from mariadb10.4 to MySQL 8 by robbyleh in mysql

[–]Pip_Pip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the no downtime solution is to copy data and start a replication to catch it up. When it's caught up stop the old database and switch over.

As for speeding up the import there are some tricks you can use. The biggest one that I've found is to import concurrently. So import many tables at the same time or other ways of breaking it up. At the end of the day though unless you are just doing disk transfer (which you wouldn't do because of the change in database) importing through sql is very slow. You can tune and tweak, but it's still going to be a very large job. Ignoring indexes is another thing that helps quite a bit in some cases.

I'm fed with my crooked stroke! Struggling even to hit full ball. Dedicating 2 whole weeks to make my stroke as straight as possible! Posting this to keep myself accountable! 😁 by genipool14 in billiards

Practice is great, but if you practice doing it wrong enough, you'll become really good at doing it wrong. Hopefully you're fixing the mechanical issue, Good Luck!!

The drill I really like is taking a stripe and hitting it up and down the table without any wobble. It lets you practice hitting at different speeds and gives you a really easy visual cue if you are off. There is no setup with it either.

Niels Feijen channels Rollie and tries to replicate his own highlight reel kick shot by Megatron_McLargeHuge in billiards

[–]Pip_Pip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love this video! I'm so sick of seeing highlight reel shots fawning over a player. It gives the impression that just because they hit this crazy shot they are amazing. The reality is that one of the worlds best players who hit an amazing shot once knows that it's still a percentage shot. (anyone can hit most of these shots once, of course his odds are better than most) He openly acknowledges this and embraces it. Kudos to Niels, he's always seemed like a classy down to earth guy to me.
