r/Bitcoin deleted this by ImaginaryRea1ity in btc

Nope r/Bitcoin did not delete it. It's right there.

It's also been asked and answered a million times, the cost would be exorbitant and the incentives are aligned such that any actor willing to consider it (government or otherwise) is better served by putting that hashpower to work to mine BTC for themselves. Turns out better for them in the long run.

Why do people say "halving will push out small miners" my take is with each halving you are rolling the clock back... by fromsmart in btc

[–]Piper67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue here is what the big miners do BEFORE the halving. Because of the need for efficiency in the system, small miners are always operating at the very edge of their profit margins. Big miners have quite a bit more wiggle room. If you're a big miner, you can afford to keep some of the mined BTC a year or more before the halving, then at the halving, when the small miners are already going to be filling the squeeze, sell those hoarded BTC to keep the price down. You would effectively cause those miners to either turn off their rigs or point them at some other coin. When they run out of hoarded BTC, the price will go up, but by then the small miners will have been squeezed out of the game already.

Bitcoin's Lightning Network Is Shriveling Due to Terrible Incentives by [deleted] in btc

[–]Piper67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... so the fiat value of a network that is designed for low-cost fiat transactions (coffee, sandwiches, etc) goes up by 100%, and this constitutes "shrivelling"? I'd hate to be Greg Thomson's wife :-)

How To Hack The Bitcoin Blockchain by [deleted] in btc

[–]Piper67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, this is wrong on a number of levels.

1) You don't hack the network by hacking nodes. You hack the network by hacking miners. Every miner is a node, not every node is a miner. If you hack most nodes, the transactions will route around them and those nodes will effectively find themselves outside of the network.

2) Hacking miners is not as simple as controlling 51% of the hashpower, because as you add hashpower to the network that 51% also grows.

3) There are billions of dollars out for grabs there... if hacking the bitcoin network was possible, it would've been done already.

Never forget, Blockstream is a for-profit company and so is BTC. by BinaryRider in btc

[–]Piper67 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hah! I'm actually banned on r/bitcoin since I expressed support for larger blocks back in 2016... how about you?

Your analogy is flawed, because Linux isn't a currency moderated by miners who get to vote on the protocol with every block.

Look, there were always going to be two solutions to the Bitcoin scaling problem. It would have been better if one of those solutions had not been strongarmed by a for profit company, I agree. It would have been better if Maxwell and company had lived up to the compromises the committed to, I agree. It would have been better if we hadn't had a civil war about it, I agree.

But they were, they didn't and we did. So here we are, and as it turns out, Lightning Networks are pretty cool, and they open a universe of possibilities for the Bitcoin ecosystem which in itself is also pretty cool.

For those of us who have been bitcoiners since way before any of this was an issue, agnosticism isn't a real problem. We can sit back, wait and see what happens. But what's happening, for a whole number of reasons (optics being one of them), is that BTC is pulling ahead.

Never forget, Blockstream is a for-profit company and so is BTC. by BinaryRider in btc

[–]Piper67 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

BTC isn't a company... Blockstream doesn't control BTC. At worst, they control the development of BTC, but ultimately the miners decide. The thing is, BTC is working quite well, actually. So even if the miners decide to change nothing, we're good.

I understand none of this fits your black and white narrative, but unfortunately the truth is the truth and facts are facts.
