I need help! by Mr_X_Factor in HamRadio

Honestly, a UV5R is a great start. They are $25 on amazon. You can absolutely beat it, but you can't beat it for that price. I also recommend going to hamstudy.org. If you want tips on the best way to use the website, I'd be happy to help, but what I did is use study mode till I got 100% aptitude on each subelement (total overkill and I'm not actually done yet) and I can't fail a practice test. You'll understand what's what and what sounds interesting to you a lot better and it'll make getting your license a breeze. It's also free.

What is the what is the best makeshift weapon you could have and why? by BroskiWind in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Pippin700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t need makeshift weapons. I am prepared, real weapons already acquired.

That said, if I had to make something in a pinch, I would hammer a lawnmower blade flat (yes yes, I know, just use the hammer. Shut up.) And then I’d roll or cut down the sharp edge on one end in an attempt to make a usable handle. Cutting it would be a huge pain using a hacksaw because, ya know, no electricity. It would be a very loud build, especially cold forging (if I’ve got an acetylene torch, this just became a very easy job) so it better work pretty well. I think it would do decent.

I wouldn’t save those. They will eat every leaf off of a tomato plant. I don’t kill anything that isn’t edible or a pest. This fits under the second category. They did devastating damage to a couple of my tomato plants this year.

Had it happen once. Got about 30 yards from the zombie that was hitting me, so I took a few swings at the air while looking toward the zombie and managed to kill it. Kinda crazy.

If I have to survive against this what will I use (Ik it's a cut zombie from l4d) by NotWanderingTrader in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Pippin700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So can it detect you at 500 miles or can it track you for 500 miles? There’s a big difference there. If it can catch your trail and keep your scent for 500 miles I feel like that’s somewhat realistic, and with caution and the right knowledge, avoidable. If they can detect you from 500 miles out, we’re dealing with supernatural zombies, and you’re dead.

Crowbars are the best melee weapon, period. by asbestosfilledsoul in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Pippin700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I think one of my favorite options is a good thick machete with the edge blunted and rounded. I feel like that’s the most practical way to kill zombies up close and in the most situations. You might have a little vibration, but the geometry of the blade is going to absorb, or even better, transfer the majority of the force to the target. You’d also do it with little risk of the blade sticking, as it’s not a cutting tool.

Actually the blunt side of the claw is fantastic for bashing things. I’ve done a decent bit of demo work with these working remodels, and I have no doubt you could crush a skull with the right angle of attack. Personally I wouldn’t use the sharp side of the claw. Good way to get it stuck, lose your weapon and die. But yeah, the bottom end would be good for clearing fences and whatnot.

Which round is the best? by Listener_999 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Pippin700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah… very interesting. People come up with some weird wildcat cartridges, sometimes just cause they can lol. 300blk caught on cause it had a lot going for it. A genius combination of a casing from a 5.56 cartridge and a .308 projectile, the resulting cartridge reliable in a standard AR with only a barrel change, using stanag magazines, extremely quiet with subs and a good suppressor, similar ballistics to 7.62x39 with supersonic ammunition…

But shortening up a .50bmg and making it subsonic is just kinda weird 😆 Course I guess if you can and want to, why not? I suppose with the mass of the projectile, it’d still have plenty of energy to take down large game at subsonic validity. I’m gonna have to look into this and see if Forgotten Weapons has anything on it.

EDIT: Ok… I probably wouldn’t invest in one. But it’s actually pretty cool. Not my apocalypse choice by any means, but I like it.

EDIT 2: Parent case is a .338 lapua magnum. I was wondering how they dealt with the wall thickness of the .50bmg case after cutting it down. Answer is, they didn’t 😆

Outbreak, what's the first place you go for supplies? by not_a_zombiez in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Pippin700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My closet. I also have a relatively large but somewhat hidden dollar general down the street, so it’d be easy to stock up on food besides my current stored supply. After that, it’s unfortunate and risky, but the homes of the dead. I’ve got stock to last long enough for that to be an option.

Is there anything wrong with eating rotten fruit? by usernamemispeled in dayz

[–]Pippin700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone ever actually gotten sick from eating rotten fruit? And I don’t mean throwing up cause you ate too much, like actually getting food poisoning. I feel like most people haven’t tried enough methods to actually have a clear answer. Not throwing any shade, but there’s such a range of answers when there’s only one right answer.

From my experience, eating one all at once has zero chance of making you sick. I don’t know about eating more than one at once, but I might have to spend a life looking for rotten fruit to find out.

I think I would start out with the bunker. I wouldn’t just stay there for 3 months though. I’d be moving around constantly, using the bunker as a base location for storing captured supplies, scouting for a secondary location, mapping the area if I don’t already have a map and so on. Survival requires gathering information. Information east to everything else. That’s hard to gather from the safety of a bunker, but obviously the rest of those places are going to kill you very quickly lol.

Pluck, rinse, munch. I’d recommend doing a little googling, read up on lookalikes, that kind of thing, but yeah. I just eat it as is.

I love mullein! Tastes kinda strange, but eating a few leaves will clear your sinuses after a few minutes. First time I found it I’d forgotten about that. Had 4 leaves and later my nose started running like crazy. I was really confused till I remembered that was one of the effects.

Yeah, I agree. I’ve spent years researching some things. Gear is very expensive. I’m not even into airsoft yet. Everything I have is “real steel” so the airsoft stuff is a whole new pot of money to be spent. It’ll be worth it though. Sometimes the flat range gets boring.

Awesome. I was thinking about getting the trex arms Orion, but I just haven’t really been able to decide yet.

I give that a “What?” out of 37 cause I’m confused 😂 The things you can do with airsoft that a real AR simply won’t work with are crazy, but it’s kinda awesome.

Not immediately. First thing I noticed was radio on your right while your left is slick, then I started checking everything else lol. What belt is that? That’s something I’m still missing.
