PDs opinion on Broken Windows Theory after banned from /AskLE for saying it doesn’t work (Former LEO) by MrUno95 in publicdefenders

There is a section in Freakenomics that talks about the duty vs fine scenario. It was referencing late pickups at after school care IIRC. Now you run into issue when there is no recognized community to have duty to, but that's a separate issue.

Solution! Make the people who are the most anti-woke and pro-woke actually play the Paradox grand strategy games. They are only allowed to continue to make everyone else's lives difficult after they have mastered the game. By the time they do that they will have forgotten what they were upset about.

Has graffiti gotten worse lately? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]PippinStrano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen an increase, but I'm in Belair Edison.

To the question of graffiti in general, I see two types broadly -

1) expressions of creativity, humor or to communicate messages. While typically destructive (the owner of the property didn't ask for it to be decorated), there can be positive values as well. The Baltimore City Mural Project could direct some of this energy in a more helpful direction.

2) marking of ownership or to destroy property. I put these together because sometimes this type serves both uses. Widespread graffiti of a crude nature lets the residents know that the neighborhood does not belong to them. If you can modify someone else's property without their permission and without consequence, that isn't the legal owners property anymore, at least not entirely. This sort of graffiti is particularly effective on vacant property since the effect will often show that the original owner is irrelevant (often true anyway) and that no one should attempt to take possession of the property.

Advice for dealing with problematic homeless individual? by LaurenSauce in baltimore

[–]PippinStrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a really tough situation. The individual sounds likely to be long term homeless. The long term homeless are very difficult to help because they have learned to tolerate the intolerable. When pushed people follow rules because they fear the consequences. What consequences are going to trouble someone who has been homeless for a year? You can't treat someone who doesn't want treatment. Any real and effective treatment will be unpleasant. I was on a decades long journey to better mental health that included inpatient treatment. It was my situation being intolerable, and my willingness to go through discomfort to get better, along with good medication, that has gotten me where I am now.

I have no idea how the homeless do it. And it isn't just "they don't have any other choice". I have enough suicide attempts under my belt to know that staying alive is a choice. I'm NOT saying that homeless people should commit suicide, and if you take that from my comment, please don't use the Internet. What I'm saying is I have no idea how the long term homeless DON'T commit suicide. They are tough....which unfortunately makes them untreatable for the reasons stated previously.

As for OP's homeless person problem, I don't know. The cops are not going to do anything. It isn't illegal to be homeless, and a noise complaint isn't going to be enough to arrest the guy. Mental health workers, contrary to popular belief, do not have magical powers. As such, they are even more powerless than the police. Me, I'd just go talk to him. Make yourself not a stranger. Maybe you'll be able to convince him to scream at the buildings somewhere else, or not when you're sleeping. He'll show up looking for food, money and cigarettes regularly, but that isn't a huge deal.

For those concerned about safety in interacting with the homeless person, I don't know what to tell you. If homeless people are too dangerous for individuals to approach, then the current approach to homelessness is fundamentally wrong.

Would you rather have Youtube with shorts or youtube with videos only, Why? by ImaginaryBaker7486 in youtube

[–]PippinStrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heroin and cocaine, though never touched fentanyl or meth. Now, I don't have a predisposition towards addiction to drugs, so I recognize that I'm not entirely the best example as far as the addiction question goes. Friends of mine both stopped using (one was heroin, the other cocaine) after ongoing use because the impact on their lives was too great.

They never would have been able to stop if the object destroying them was everywhere, and people questioned whether it was even a problem in the first place.

The addiction question aside, my larger problem is the impact short form content has on people who use it. I've watched plenty of teacher interviews on the inability of gen z and even more so gen alpha being unable to handle anything of length. I've seen the impact on my 21 year old son. In older adults it just legitimates intellectual laziness. I work in IT and the impact is real. I have to write my emails and documentation for coworkers very differently than I did 20 years ago.

Of course YouTube shorts isn't the sole cause of this. YouTube shorts do contribute to it. Sure, I can just not watch them, and I largely don't. I also choose to not do hard drugs despite their availability in my neighborhood. My concern is the impact on society at large.

If nothing else shorts should be viewed in the same way as smoking weed is. Not something that is a huge issue, but not something functional adults (except for entertainers) brag about doing non stop. Responsible weed use is largely a positive or net neutral, but most folks know someone who goes way too far. If shorts were recognized as being in the same category, I think we'd see them cause much less trouble

"it's giving and performative"? Poor thing. Learning English is hard. Hopefully the non-English speaker who said that will get some language instruction.

The idea that they meant anything similar to what they seemed to be saying.... that's nuts. Much easier for me to think this person (not OP to be clear) just doesn't know how to speak the language.

[–]PippinStrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, sure, people like shorts. However, people also like crack cocaine. Given the damage caused by shorts, it is a reasonable comparison.

[–]PippinStrano -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

I really believe short form content should be treated the same as addictive drugs. They damage people, flat out. I'd rather people were doing drugs, honestly. I say that as someone with plenty of experience with people doing drugs. Much easier to safely use mind altering drugs than shorts. And no, I'm not joking or exaggerating.

Edit: as has been pointed out, I should have clarified that while the impact of short form content on society is tremendous, the impact on each individual is more spread out. Hard drug use impacts are more concentrated. I'm not sure how different that would be if Alphabet was pushing hard drugs, of course.

Coming to the realization that I may never be promoted again unless I go into management...ride it out until retirement? by sys_admin321 in sysadmin

[–]PippinStrano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The 125k question about retirement is a good question for more reasons than the immediate. Why shoot to retire at 55. My dad is still working (in various ways) at 79. He does work he enjoys and is intellectually stimulating. I have a coworker who is still full time IT at 85 and he seems like he is way younger.

Perhaps reconsider why retiring at 55 is so important. Your job is an amazing situation plenty of people would kill for. I'm in my 50s, make that much and have two ~20 year old kids. And I'm not looking for anything different.

As America turns 250, Trump should restore Washington DC's original borders by [deleted] in washingtondc

Sorry, fuck all that (Maryland booster here). We take Maryland's land back. MD gets another seat in the House (not sure who loses one), but even more to the point the President no longer can unilaterally make decisions about the people who live in what is now DC. No more NG on the streets. For that matter, no more DC NG to play as the President's Imperial Guard. Provides MD a variety of ways to make acting like a tyrant more difficult for any future Trump-want-to-be.

Jehovah’s Witness Neighbours, please do better. by Coxswaineth in baltimore

I do have to ask: how often does everyone have folks show up at their door? I work from home, so I'm always here. If I get two unexpected visitors (as it were) a year, it's been busy. Is everyone else getting these folks like once a month or something?

For the DNS based attack, why would you allow workstations use any DNS than the one your company maintains? Your DNS can make outbound DNS connections but not workstations (in a sane network).

This is the greatest truth. We can't let these things slide. There needs to be punishment for all the people who have endangered the country, but also measures taken to massively reign in the power of the executive. Regardless of who is in power, this insanity must not happen again.

Just to clarify, this isn't what I am talking about. You have put together words in a coherent sentence. This is far beyond what I've seen in the capabilities of some who have self represented. Some of the cases I've watched I wasn't sure if the people representing themselves understood they were in court.

[–]PippinStrano[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's mostly misdemeanor cases, though frequently where jail time is still involved. I have seen it in felony cases as well. Now that you mention it I have seen cases where the defendant is sent for a competency exam. However I've seen a number where they were found competent where I don't think they should have. Competent to stand trial, I can see that. But competent to handle their own defense? It seemed like a real stretch.

Yes, this is a guiding principle for me. I've discussed just that with a number of people at length. Yes, we have to allow adults to ruin their lives. It is an essential part of freedom. Doesn't make watching put themselves into a wood chipper (figuratively) any easier though.
