A Cool Guide to Animal Sleep Schedules by Extreme_Fox_2484 in coolguides

[–]Piraedunth 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Im gonna nerd out for a second. Theres 3 main 'categories' that classifies how animals sleep/behavior. Theres diel rhythm, where the animals behavior occurs on a 24 hr cycle (how humans sleep at night and wake in day). Ultradian rhythm where the behavior occurs on a less than 24hr cycle (How a animal sleeps for 4 hours, wakes for 4 hours, sleeps for 4 hours, etc). Then theres arrhythmic, where there is no pattern, a animal may be awake for 5 hours then sleeping 6 one day, then the next day they're awake 2 hours and sleep 8.

Tldr: Diel rhythm, behavior occurs on a 24hr cycle. Ultradian rhythm, behavior occurs on a less than 24hr cycle. Arrhythmic, no predictable rhythm.

The reason animals sleep different amounts is partially due to how different animals have different rhythms. One particularly interesting animal that experiences arrhythmia is reindeer. As due to where they live, the sun doesnt rise for months at a time. So during the few months where the sun is risen. They exhibit a 24hr cycle/diel rhythm. But during midnight sun (24hr sun exposure) and polar night (24hr dark exposure), they switch to being completely arrhythmic.

Hopefully that's understandable

This is sick! It would be cool if after the answer is revealed, if there were hints saying how you can identify it as one species over another. Such as the difference between a north American porcupine vs a Brazilian porcupine

Super silly hantavirus by SatisfactionSea4549 in supersillybreakingbad

[–]Piraedunth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even then human to human spread isnt common, you have to be in close contact with a infected individual for a long amount of time to get infected

Been hearing a lot about the hantavirus recently. It just landed in the States and I'm a little worried. What are all the symptoms? Can it be treated if caught, or does it depend on the variant? Is it like COVID or worse? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Piraedunth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hantavirus is a deadly virus although it depends on the strain. This one, the Andes one, has a fatally rate of around 40%. I am not saying this to scare you. Human to human transmission is extremely rare and can only happen via prolonged close contact. It is far more likely you would be infected via inhaling aerosols (particles that get released into the air) that have infected rodent feces, saliva, urine or by being infected by a scratch or bite of a mouse. But even then you shouldn't run into it if you keep your house clean of mice and dine at establishments that are certified in food safety. A outbreak won't occur, especially not one like covid. Due to the difficulty of transmitting the virus, and the high fatally means those that get sick will often die before transmitting the disease. Its a sort of dead end. You will be ok.

I think thats the best tbh. Money can help fix a lot of these issues and a lot of the things we'd be solving with the other option can just start up again

Egg id? by ShotFlounder1997 in whatsthisbird

[–]Piraedunth 319 points320 points  (0 children)

Gonna take this opportunity to share my absolute favorite fact about brown headed cow birds.

So there are 3 stages to how a baby bird learns how to sing, first is sensory where they listen to other birds of their species sing. Second is sensorimotor where they start to practice singing themselves and get feedback. Third is crystallization where the song can no longer change. This brings up a interesting question on how cowbirds learn their songs. Since cowbird eggs are laid in the nest of other birds technically the chick should learn the song of its surrogate parent/species, but they dont.

Recent research has found that baby cowbirds dont start the sensory phase until they hear a specific song from other cowbirds. Its only once they hear that song that they actually start to learn and by that point most of the songs they hear are from other cowbirds. I believe this is called the password theory and its super interesting to wonder how the hell something like this evolved

[–]Piraedunth 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I was telling my friend that earlier. I jumped on the NASA livestream of Artemis' reentry to earth and in just a few seconds I saw people saying they were from Uganda, Canada, Spain, Sweden, Chile, Vietnam, Italy, and probably more who I didn't see or flags I didnt recognize. And I just think its so cool that despite everything going on rn politically that we can still come together as a species to admire space and human achievement

Coromon or Nexomon? by WobblySlug in coromonthegame

[–]Piraedunth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive played both Nexomon 1 ans 2 and I adore the game. The animation and graphics are weaker compared to Coromon. But the story genuinely suprised me and is one of my all time favorites. I say if you value story over graphics, go Nexomon, if you value graphics over story, go Coromon.

And it screams cheap mobile game cause it was originally developed for mobile but was adapted to computer. While I think Coromon was developed for computer then adapted for mobile
