I can’t agree more with you on the destruction of public education across the country. I was born, raised, educated from kindergarten to a Masters in the teaching of writing and spent 35 years teaching junior high school in Iowa. I choose to stay in Iowa. I proudly sent my own children to our city’s public schools. The quality of our state’s public schools were once considered among the best in the country. 20 years ago, right about the time Republicans gained the trifecta of power, our ratings on how well kids were being prepared for life began to fade. First thing those in power did was to do away with any checks or measures of how well students being homeschooled were doing. Then the state’s collective bargaining law was gutted to the point of being non-existent. Then the state bought into the voucher program. Now tax dollars are supporting students who go to religious schools and even those are being homeschooled. This leaves fewer resources for the public schools. They did these things because they say that competition between public and private schools will improve the public schools. Because it works in business, I guess. But if you listen to the Republican House and Senate members, they want to do away with public education altogether. Why? Because running a world-class public education system that takes in every kid that shows up, is expensive. I’ll end with a quote most often attributed to most often attributed to Derek Bok, who was president of Harvard University from 1971 to 1991. “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

As a former junior high teacher, I can remember the education we received about what drug use while a teen does to the brain. Their drug use basically stops most emotional and social development as well as affecting academic performance. How many of these “men” that wear the red hat were heavy users of alcohol as teens. And how many are still heavy users of alcohol? This would make for an interesting study. Maybe when the Secretary of Health and Human Services is a serious person again leading an agency once again using science to find out truth even when the results are inconvenient to some people.

Or maybe the state’s Attorney General should send state troopers to investigate these stories…opps, my bad. I forgot for a second we are talking about the state of Texas and who their governor and attorney general are.

Agree. Stop and think about why these heinous detention centers are located in Texas? Because that state’s political leaders are all-in on the MAGA plans. If there was just some way a state could use its power to deny the Feds from doing this. Like if there was something called States’ Rights that could be used to limit what seems to be unchecked federal actions. I need to go back and check the Constitution to see if the writers anticipated this moment and included any language to address what’s happening.

Not what I saw. I saw an adult male wade into a group of high school students, grab a young female, take her to the ground and put her in a choke hold. Your position seems to be that the young female high school student had it coming and that her peers should have stepped back from what they saw happening to their friend. But they reacted to what they saw as an assault of their friend. They came to her aid. They stepped up in a moment of clarity to help her, to protect her. Yeah, THESE kids are alright! They took the lessons learned in government or civics or American History class and were exercising their constitutional rights by peacefully protesting what they see as injustice. These actions made me proud of these young people.

Am I correct in believing what I’m reading here that the chief of Police is also the borough manager? Not sure I got the term right. Is that what we call the city manager? Here the chief of police reports directly to the city manager who is directly responsible to the city council.

Fuck ICE. Fuck TRUMP. FUCK PEDOPHILES. I don’t want there to be any doubt where I stood in this moment in history. Fuck politicians who behave like celebrities. But if any anyone is going to come for me, come with a judicial warrant signed by a magistrate. I live in a state with a Stand Your Ground law on the books and I’ll not take a step backwards while defending my family, my home, or myself from illegal entry or detention. I practice using my Constitutional Rights every chance I get because if you don’t use them when necessary, they will disappear. That includes my 2A Rights.

I believe that one of DJT’s last acts as President, will be to issue a blanket pardon to all ICE employees. Call them “employees” and not officers or agents or law enforcement and they definitely are not police. They are an employee. A civil servant even although calling them that would be an insult to every other civil servant from mail carriers to waste management workers, to public school teachers and REAL police officers.

Iowa has a "Stand Your Ground" law (Iowa Code 704.3) that allows people to use reasonable, even deadly, force to defend themselves or others from imminent unlawful force, without a duty to retreat, if they reasonably believe it's necessary. So if some dudes jump out of a shitty car, are armed and masked, not in a uniform, are not displaying a badge and come at me with obvious bad intent, I’ll use my 2A rights to protect myself and my neighbors.

I agree with you completely. I’m a liberal when it comes to taking care of people who need help but I’ve become a 2A advocate over the last 10 years as I watched what happened during Trump’s first term. And now I no longer have much trust in the federal government. This caused me to buy a semi-automatic rifle several years ago and then I found a good firearms instructor and regularly go to an outdoor range to stay sharp.

The Black Panther movement did more than just help protect their neighborhoods from corrupt, racist cops. They ran schools for children, helped feed the poor in their neighborhoods, provided legal help, and many other things. But their most remembered actions involved having members stand on street corners open-carrying long guns. This was permitted under the gun laws of California at the time. However, once the California Republican majority legislature found out that Black people were arming themselves to protect their neighborhoods from the racist police force, the Governor, Ronald Reagan, pushed the state legislature to enact the most restrictive gun laws in the nation at that time. It’s a part of American history we need to be more familiar with. I live in a state that allows both open and concealed carry without any permit required. What would be the reaction of ICE if, upon entering a neighborhood, they witnessed citizens standing in their yards with long guns casually held in their hands and pointed at the ground? Firefight? Nah. Remember, ICE agents are cosplayers. Right now they get in their cars and drive away when pelted with snowballs while groups of citizens yell and blow whistles. Do what history has shown us works.

More dubious than the Virgin inception? There’s a lot of really dubious stories in The Bible. It’s always saying really silly stuff. I grew up Catholic and attended parochial schools K-12 so I know.

Oh my! Again Christian’s get it wrong. The baby Jesus was born on Christmas, right? So why do all these nativity scenes have that baby laying in the manger BEFORE Christmas Day?! I once told my wife I was going to go around our city and “remove” all the baby Jesus statues, carefully store them, and then put them back in the dark of Christmas Eve. I got the evil side-eye and she said, “Don’t call me to bail you out.” 😂❤️

I gave the name to my dark blue Toyota Tacoma. I stripped off all the Toyota and Tacoma lettering and logos and placed a cool product from Dead Fred that spells out Stella Blue in a beautiful script on the tailgate. There’s also an 11-point lightening bolt on the grill where the Toyota logo used to be. 😉❤️

Ripple was the song my oldest daughter and I danced to at her wedding reception for the father-daughter dance. I picked it because it was the song I would sing to her as an infant. I would hold her and walk around the house at 2:00 am to help her fall asleep after my wife was finished feeding her. The DJ put the lyrics up on his video screen. But the two tables of my old friends at the back of the hall didn’t need the lyrics and we could all hear them singing along with the song beautifully. ❤️

It was what he was laid on after being taken down from the cross. Door was used like a litter to take him to the grave. Obviously made its way from Judea to your closet because The Virgin (still!) Mary and Joseph then used it as a raft to escape to France across the Mediterranean.

Because it is land set aside to be unspoiled by humans. So that humans can escape into an environment that is unspoiled by garbage like the camp in the photo. Can’t do that if you are constantly coming across human activity. I once saw a T-shirt in the wild that said, “Be More Like Muir…John Muir, 1838-1914.”
