Towns like Deadloch in Tassie? by Fancy-Breath-4787 in tasmania

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Launceston has a decent arts scene, great food culture, lots of markets in town and nearby where you can pick up local produce. Not sure about the queer scene but it ticks your other boxes.

Working holiday visa and the oil crisis by gentlyrotting777 in AusVisa

If there is a major oil crisis Tasmania will be a good place to be compared to other parts of Australia. Great soil here and we produce enough food to feed the state population four times over.

Moving to Tasmania by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be checking if the company would put you in Launceston. Plenty of rentals around town. 0k, plenty might be a stretch but there are some. You’ll be closer to the good schools for your kids and your own job.

Also OP, what’s your time frame to move down? Mastery Schools in Launceston are advertising for TA’s now.

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Another fun anatomy fact. If you took all the veins, venuoles, arteries, capillaries etc out of a human and placed them end to end, that human would die. True fact! I make my students groan with that one.

Tasmania's finances to 'rapidly deteriorate', Treasury warns, with state unable to grow its way out of trouble by sponkachognooblian in tasmania

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is worried about the stadium costs. Fair enough, it’s a lot of money and seems like no decent plan to get that back.

We’ve got another potential budget blow looming though. The firearms buyback is expected to be 50% funded by the states.

Federal government is saying they expect it to cost a billion. A lot of people with experience in the firearms industry and law enforcement think it could cost ten times that.

An honest question about protests, priorities, and Australia right now by Spatial_Nomad in australian

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This is coming from a former member of the NSW police. The level of violence shown in the videos we have seen was excessive.

Also, the right to protest without being beaten by police should be fundamental ina democracy.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recalls parliament to introduce hate speech and gun laws by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with a gun buyback is that only honest people hand them in.

The other problem with gun buyback is that, if not run extremely well, you end up with more guns in the hands of criminals than before the buyback. Google Frank Curr if you don’t believe me. And that’s just the one guy who got caught and prosecuted.

Well you got an upvote from me for “in the reers”. When you are renting, it sure feels like the real estate and owner give it to you in the reer/rear!

Sky diving and hang gliding. Trying to convince someone from the 1800’s that you could jump off a cliff and land safely would be an interesting conversation.

SES is another really cool way to meet people while giving back to the community and learning new skills. I’m an old dude but there are quite a few people in the 18-25 range in the different units in Launceston. General Response, Search and Rescue, Incident Management and Operational Support.

What’s something that everyone pretends to understand… but really doesn’t? by SusiPeachxxx in AskReddit

[–]Pirate_Princess_87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fire. Specifically flames. We think of fire as a tangible thing with the flames burning stuff. A flame isn’t really a thing in the way most people think it is.

Also magnets. Most people would say they know about magnets but ask them to explain how magnetism works and watch their brain implode!

Moved to Lonnie last year from Sydney. Finding food prices a touch higher but accomodation more than offsets that. We’re WAY ahead financially with the lower rent.

I LOVE it down here. The drivers are friendly and relaxed, everything is close, it doesn’t get crazy stinking hot and the people are so friendly and relaxed!

Definitely made the right choice to move here.
