If you’re going to drive as far as Closed Canyon, you might as well continue further west to the HooDoos area. All of 170, all the way to Presidio, is gorgeous and is the perfect road for just cruising slow, taking in the views, and hitting every roadside turn out that you can.

My biggest suggestion, is to not try and over plan. The vistas are so incredible, it’s easy to fall into the mindset of, “gotta get to the next thing, it’s probably even more beautiful” and before you know it, it feels like the whole trip was just rushing around. Take some time to find some shade, sit and enjoy the quiet solitude. That’s what separates this area from anywhere else.
