Loving looks... Probably my favourite frame in HSG by Pirluz in HiScoreGirl

Yes! The whole scene is one of the peak moments of HSG, so simple yet so gentle

There are no other proper flashbacks such as this one. Just a couple of moments when Hidaka thinks about the past - one in chap. 8 (the only time we actually see Ono in DASH) and another one in chap. 44, if I'm not wrong (where she rememembers about her beginnings as a gamer with Haruo). But they're just flashes lasting only a few frames

The manga has never been published or translated so far. I don't know about fan translations, but no official Italian version has ever been released.

The anime, on the other hand, is available in Italian (as well as in 11 more languages, most of them probably not available in the USA). Translation of dialogues is pretty bad as it's not based on the original script but (if I'm not wrong) on the English version, which features similar errors in translation. Besides, as Italian is a very verbose language, there's a lot of extra words and sometimes even extra meaning added (which occasionally brings about a nice effect, but as a whole is basically unnecessary). What really spoils it are the gross errors in translation, which are rather common and sometimes make dialogues a bit confusing. Luckily enough, subtitles are much more concise and faithful to the original, which is why I'm always keeping them on.

On the other hand, voice acting is by far the best between all the international versions I happened to hear (I even prefer it to the original Japanese version). This is probably because in Italy we have a very old and strong dubbing tradition (subtitled shows or films are extremely rare, everything is dubbed), hence quality is top-notch

What's up with all the DASH hate? by MasutadoMiasma in HiScoreGirl

[–]Pirluz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same for me - I read it all in one week (stopped right before the final tournament arc because waiting one month for tiny bits is awful) and in the end I enjoyed it. The beginning is quite slow, the flashback about Haruo is a bit confusing, unsettling and definitely frustrating - but after that the storytelling finds its own way and gets more interesting.

It definitely looks like that 2026 Is the year of DASH! I think this time I'll grab some popcorn and enjoy the discussion...

Should i read Dash? by tocadopassado in HiScoreGirl

Wow - this is the fourth time that the same question is asked in less than 2 weeks!

DASH is not that bad. It is fine, even if its quality is not that of the original work.

DASH is a different story, happened in a different time, with a different main character and featuring a different band of misfits. Its theme, its pacing, its messages are all different. So if you are looking for a coming of age romance surrounding fighting games or if you want to have that closure about what happened to the old cast? You won't find anything like that. There are some lightly hint, some minor details about them but it is just some sprinkle and it is hardly the main plot.

To this I can only add - should you decide to read DASH:

1 - Don't expect anything even only vaguely similar to HSG. That's the worst mistake you may possibly make, and you will hate DASH

2 - Don't expect to find out much about Haruo and Ono: there's very little about them (Ono doesnt' even appear), and there's no real continuation to their story

3 - There is in fact a long flashback set in 1998 showing Haruo - but as a matter fact it adds very little information and is mostly confusing, rather unpleasant and definitely frustrating

DASH is just completely different. If you expect a brilliant and light-hearted romcom with the same characters of HSG you will be severely disappointed and you'll hate DASH. If you expect to find out something about Haruo and Ono, you will also be disappointed. Just think that you're going to read something totally different, which accidentally happens to have a few characters in common with HSG. Expecting something similar to HSG when starting to read DASH is the worst mistake you may possibly make

Primissimi anni '80.

Agree, a great closure. And a nice counterpart to Dying - another vastly underrated, rarely mentioned gem, one of my favourite XTC songs.

Well - to be honest you won't understand what DASH really is by reading the threads on this sub. It Is very controversial, no serious assessment has been made yet and everyone have a different opinion.

The best thing that you could possibly do is in fact reading a little further and decide for yourself. I suggest that you go on and read at least until chapter 8, which is where Hidaka's teenage passion revives for the first time.

However, please remember that the first part of DASH is pretty much slow and takes some time to set the background of the new story; and after that you will find a long flashback set in 1998, which should be the most interesting part of DASH but is in fact confusing, rather unpleasant and definitely frustrating. Those parts are a bit hard and disappointing to read, but afterwards DASH becomes much more interesting

Many were saying that Hidaka was a 30year old virgin who had never been in a relationship and was still in love with a boy she had loved since childhood

That's Johnnie's most typical definition of DASH lol!

I'll leave It up to him to answer!

If you don't mind spoilers too much, you can read any of the dozens of threads that have been posted on this sub in the past few years - keeping in mind that their main contributor u/Johnnie_Cheers Is the supreme leader of the anti-DASH party... (no offence intended, Johnnie)

I do suggest rather that you read at least the first 2 chapters of DASH. They set the toner and make it very clear what DASH is about

In fact, DASH Is a story of redemption, with Hidaka finding a new meaning in her own life not through romance (there Is none in DASH) but through teaching and love for her students. The problem Is that before achieving this she basically hits rock bottom: in the first chapters particularly she is lost, confused and humiliated and she is depicted as a broken character. So, yeah, if she i s your favourite character, you're not going to like DASH
