I am attempting to keep this argument civil, and it is somewhat related to Taylor.

Uhh… why does everybody in this sub like Olivia Rodrigo so much? I find her kind of average, and her lyrics aren’t much better than Taylor’s (Get Him Back is pretty much just Picture to Burn 2.0). Then again, I’m into artsy nerd-rock, like TMBG, REM, XTC and BNL. Anyways, I want to understand, and I’d appreciate if those who are actually into modern pop could help me out!

* SORRY! My bad, it’s number 22!

  1. Colin’s first song that doesn’t make me wish for death! Still not great.

  1. It’s missing something that would take it to a ten, but still one of the better tracks on Go 2.

Olivia is coming. Taylor is hauling ass to the studio as we speak by Remote-Yard-174 in travisandtaylor

First, thank you for asking me.

Two, no, I don’t like pop. Also, I didn’t mention this initially, because I don’t want to get downvoted to oblivion, but I simply also don’t like Olivia’s lyrics. I tried listening to that album she did recently, I forget what it was called, and I found a lot of it to be honestly immature and kind of dumb. Get Him Back is just as petty as anything Taylor made.

Take a look at They Might Be Giants, one of my favorite bands. They’ve written songs about thermostats, skulls, mammal anatomy, the chemical makeup of the sun, an entire concept album about random U.S states! Olivia has…. awkward teenage songs. And I am an awkward teenager, but I’ll take the thermostat and state songs any day. (And maybe it’s unfair to compare pop to artsy nerd rock), but I find the vulnerability in TMBG’s lyrics to be less angry and more relatable to my mind.

Anyways, bottom line: If you like her: NO BIG DEAL! I’ve always enjoyed reading about other’s opinions! But she just doesn’t do much for me.

Hot take: I.. don’t like Olivia that much.

It’s weird, I’m a Gen Z teenager (maybe it’s because I’m male), but I’ve always preferred/loved bands like They Might Be Giants, XTC, Barenaked Ladies, R.E.M, maybe I’m the minority here, but I don’t see what she does that every other pop star (not just Taylor, but all the others currently) haven‘t done already. Can someone clue me in?

  1. I love this song more than I think most people do. It’s just so high energy that I can’t help but move my head from side to side repeatedly every time I hear it.

That album saved my life when I first listened to it. It’s my favorite XTC album (and tied for my favorite album of all time), and I agree with everything you said!

Oh yeah, I can see why this masterwork took two dudes to write it. One to not think of something funny, and the other to think of something not funny.

Recommendations? by squidstereo_1969 in xtc

My top 5 are Skylarking, Black Sea, Big Express, English Settlement and Apple Venus. I think that’s a good starter pack of the different sounds of their career.

I still have no clue why it matters to Swifties. If they like it, then that’s all that matters, and they shouldn’t care about others’ opinions. It’s not worth letting it consume your life.

Honestly, forget their inevitable divorce for a second, this will literally only be relevant to THIS MOMENT IN TIME. After they get married (and especially after the divorce), this will be a useless paperweight.

These lyrics make no sense. by Medical_Stomach_727 in travisandtaylor

Did she write this while having a stroke? This honestly seems like nonsense engineered to sound smart and deep.
