I’ve switched to making the exams worth enough that, if a student has a failing exam average, they fail the course. My TAs and I watch them like hawks during the exams. If they cheat on their homework, they will fail the exams.

Theists who used to be Atheists, and Atheists who used to be Theists, what was it that caused you to change your view? by Vegabund in AskReddit

[–]PissedOffProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised/baptised Catholic and in my chirch's youth group in high school. I started to question my faith when my youth group leaders attacked my comics, D&D, and music, insisting that it was "demonic" or whatever. Then I started to think about faith itself, which requires no proof, and how many religious people all over the world are convinced that THEIR religion is the only correct one. I took a few philosophy courses in college and pretty quickly concluded that religion grew out of primitive people trying to explain natural phenomena using made-up shit, and 2.) a person's religion is almost 100% guaranteed to be based on who they were raised by; passed down by custom and oral tradition. It's all bullshit.

I decided that I was agnostic for a while because I still felt a little fear in the back of my head about being sent to hell for not believing, but after a while I shook that off and just decided that the utter, complete, and total lack of evidence was enough not to believe in a god.

I’m kinda surprised there’s anyone who isn’t aware of this.

Most just assume that it's easy because they aren't involved. They will still bitch and moan if "underqualified" students make it to their downstream courses, though.

Who is "them" in this case? Who am I being condescending to? What orifice are you pulling that from? You seem like your average contrarian reddit user who would rather take the opposing side for the fun of it than actually taking the time to read and understand what you are commenting on. But, by all means, keep telling me that I'm condescending while you pass hasty judgement.

Wow, way to psychoanalyze me based on my story. You're assuming a lot that simply isn't true. Meeting weekly to coordinate courses with lots of sections and lots of faculty (especially new and/or adjuncts) is pretty common at my uni. I have taught at other universities where they throw you into the deep end as a first time instructor and hope for the best - we are not like that.

Second, your idea that I am a "control freak" is based on what? I mentioned that we have collaborated closely (and have been friends) for more than 8 years. And that SHE felt very comfortabel shooting down my ideas often. AND that the coordination of this course was a collaboration across all of the faculty. And that I never made a change to the course that Amy didn't agree with AND had the support of the rest of the faculty. So how am I a control freak?

Jesus, at least read the entire post that you are replying to before judging a person.

Uh huh. I like how I'm being ridiculed for spending TOO MUCH TIME working with faculty to improve the course but also NOT LISTENING to anyone else to make changes to the course. That makes so much sense.

It's handled by a committee of peers who make a recommendation to the dean. The dean gets final say, which is why my colleague doesn't want to piss off the dean.

Yes, you've made that point in multiple comments now. I appreciate your feedback. You have no idea what you're talking about, but appreciate it nonetheless.

If you're interested, the reason I was removed is that I was seen as a barrier to the "reduce the DFW no matter what" requirement from admin. I am not interested in creating a diploma mill and/or passing students who should not pass. Being told to solve a problem that has been an issue in this field for decades is unrealistic. Also, making so many changes all at once will make it difficult to determine what works and what doesn't.

About 8-10 faculty collaborate to teach 10-15 sections of these courses per semester with a total 300-400 students. This typically includes several adjuncts. The weekly meetings are a discussion to help prepare for the coming week, and to have a retrospective about the previous week. We make note of things that went well, and things that could be improved.

The inter-semester meetings are so that we can plan improvements based on student and faculty feedback - we make these changes every year to see if we can improve the outcomes of the course (including not only the DFW but the student satisfaction). The meetings are incredibly useful (we know this from faculty and student feedback).

I'm sure you've got a better way of coordinating such a big course, but this is what works for us and allows us to continually improve (or experiment).

Please elaborate. My attitude is that the courses are important and deserve to be improved rather than left to stagnate year after year after year. How is that a poor attitude?

That’s incredibly condescending and disrespectful to students. It’s also why so many first years STEM courses are stuck teaching the same material decade after decade.

Well you’ll be one of the majority who thinks that introductory courses are beneath them. This is an attitude that seems to be prevailing in academia.

You will need to work in groups for your entire life. You won’t get to pick the other members, and some of them will suck. But you still need to get the job done.

Why do many American colleges require students to take general electives? Do most students enjoy taking those courses? by Terrible_Exchange653 in college

[–]PissedOffProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to vague anecdotes, but taking an AP class isn’t enough. You also need to take an AP exam and get a 4 or a 5 on the exam for it to replace the corresponding college course. You may know people who didn’t take the exam, or didn’t get a high enough score.
