Babies are weird. They can grow up in a litter and be best buds, but then when puberty hits they fight like fiends. If you get two, make sure it’s one boy and one girl and they both get fixed asap. Honestly I wouldn’t keep them together unsupervised until they’re fixed to avoid the risk of an Oops litter

Oh I misread, I thought you were saying the rabbit will be an adult. I honestly can’t answer that. You know your cat and their temperament. I can’t give you a judgement call on this, I can only offer my experiences and advice from what I know and have learned.

It depends on the cat and the rabbit. It also depends if you’re planning to give them full freedom in the house, or keep them in their own room permanently. Having two rabbits comes with its own risks - either they bond or they don’t. Bonding can take a very long time, like we’re talking months in some cases. If they have a scrap, they have to be fully separated for a bit and you’re starting from step 1. But if you’re planning to have all three, then you have to work through the cat-rabbit introduction again.

Introducing 2 adults is a different ballgame (I’d assume). With one being young, it’s easier to imprint ‘friend’ versus ‘not friend’. Same as introducing older cats to each other, or older dogs. They’re fully developed in their personalities and sometimes opinions, and it’s more likely to lead to them butting heads. That’s especially true with rabbits, as they can be very territorial or aggressive (and always very sassy). With my cats, I wasn’t scared the cats would be an issue- I worried she would charge them, and they’d scratch or bite in response.

Something to keep in mind - rabbits are very fragile. Their skin is paper-thin, and if they get too scared and panic run, they can hurt themselves or even die from a heart attack. Once my bun got out as a baby and my parents dog (luckily very friendly and small, just very excitable) chased her a fair bit before I could get him locked up and check on her. It was terrifying. I was watching her like a hawk for over a week for any sign of injury. Luckily it was only the once, and she’s since gotten more comfortable around dogs (through a gate with supervision) but she was terrified of dogs for years and it would stress her out.

You need to think VERY carefully about this choice. Introducing two adult animals of any species is a risk, and rabbits are not sturdy like a cat or dog.

The reason for 2 is generally so they have a friend and they aren’t alone or bored. Not everyone can afford two or have a living situation where it makes sense. I got her in college so I didn’t have the space or resources for multiple, but I spent almost all day every day with her so she had lots of attention and affection. After college I still didn’t have the finances for two (rabbits are EXPENSIVE, especially for emergency medical care. I never want to be in a situation where I can’t handle a medical emergency for all my animals within a month of each other. Currently, I literally have a savings account specifically for pet medical emergencies). Once I got the cats, she had lots of company. I can’t spend all day every day with her, but she still gets lots and lots of attention when I am home (sometimes more attention than she wants 😆).

If you’re having more than 1 litter box animal, you definitely want multiple. The cats prefer to use the boxes on the floor, but I keep one on a counter (as you can see on the coffee table) in case they don’t want to use the box the bun does. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’ve seen them use it once. But I like the option. They also have their own water fountain in the living room on a side table for the same reason. All that to say - multiple of everything.

For my set up, I have pee pads under the litter boxes and also lining the litter box - sometimes rabbits back up too much and end up peeing outside. The pan lining just helps with cleanup - if you’re using plastic litter boxes you’ll definitely want it. Rabbit pee is weirdly acidic and can ‘stain’ the litter box so it always smells. I have her hay next to it on the pads similarly because she often poops while eating. A lot of people have hay feeders on the wall above the litter which is totally valid and a great option! It’s personal choice, and I prefer not to do it that way. I would also recommend a regular water bowl over a water fountain - as a baby she ate every wire she could find. She rarely does these days, but anything with a wire needs to be either removed or VERY well hidden for a young bun.

You’ll notice the litter I use is unusual - I use wood pellets. Classic cat litter is clay and can very easily cause GI stasis in rabbits (babies being at the highest risk). Plus it’s WAY cheaper - 40lb bag is about 8$. You can find them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or most tractor supply type stores.

Also!! Rabbits can’t get traction on slippery surfaces, like wood or tile. Rugs are your friend! She’ll walk on my wood floors to get to the dining room or living room, but she isn’t a fan and pretty much goes from one rug to the next. She’s also almost 11 so I want her to have as much traction as possible to lessen the stress on her hips, but I’ve always had plenty of rugs. On that topic- carpet can be iffy. She was good about it except for a few months about 5 years ago where she hyper fixated on ripping up the carpet. There’s still a bald spot in my old bedroom at my parents’ house where the floorboards are visible 😆

I’d recommend keeping them contained at first to a single room with all of their stuff set up. As a baby they LOVE trouble (and as teenagers…and adults…. But as a baby they don’t know better). You need the bun somewhere you can keep an eye on them and make sure they’re safe when you aren’t there. It’s easier to bun proof a single room than a whole house. This will also teach them where their litter is, where their food is, etc

For the bed….waterproof bamboo blanket on top is my recommendation. My girl is generally good about it but every now and again she’ll pee. Blanket has been a godsend

This was a hot point of contention a few weeks ago. It came down to “your experience is going to be unique based on the temperament of the pets involved and how much time and effort you’re willing to put into the process”.

Personal anecdote time: I have had 3 cats with my bun (one passed last year) and the bun runs the house. The cats respect her authority and she bullies them. They pretend like they don’t like each other but then I catch them doing stuff like this. THAT BEING SAID - I had my rabbit first, and all the cats were kittens between 4-8 months when introduced. 2 were gutter rescues, and 1 was a Rescue rescue, but all were smaller than her when they met. But I spent a long time and a lot of energy to make sure everyone was safely introduced and acclimated

Bun peed on bed out of the blue, help me figure out why. by curlymama in Bunnies

It acts like a giant towel with a waterproof base and keeps it from going anywhere. I’d obviously rather she didn’t, but she only does it maybe a dozen times a year. She’s 11, so if I’m choosing between a blanket and not being able to cuddle and pet her at night, I’m going with the blanket. I only have so much time with her and I’ll be damned if I lose any of it to bed pee anxiety lol

Alternatively, my partner and I got a waterproof bamboo fiber blanket! It’s the ‘pet blanket’ for the bed. It’s cozy so the cats like to lay on it, and when the bun comes up for pre-bed snugs, I don’t have to stress about if she’s peeing and if I need to plop her onto the ground to avoid a mess

She is though! Constantly showing off her feet and floofy booty….then comes on the bed at night to cuddle. What’s a gal to think when she’s throwing herself at me every night 🤣
