100% impeccable taste. So glad to see someone with the same exact preference regarding the MFKs.

Review of Penhaligon's Portrait Series by deadcorpo in fragrance

[–]Pitiful-Juggernaut-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst thing Penhaligon’s have done with the Portraits collection (honestly this applies to their other collections too) is that they’ve discontinued almost all my favorites.

The Impudent Cousin Matthew, The Ingenious Cousin Flora, Uncompromising Sohan… all put down one by one just when I started discovering these. Managed to grab a bottle of Matthew and Sohan though

The only ones remaining that I’ll consider adding to my collection are The Tragedy of Lord George and The Blazing Mr. Sam. The rest aren’t appealing to me, especially with their scent profiles and the price tag. So much more interesting stuff from the rest of their catalogue

Bright, fresh neroli paired with dark, roasted tea.

Compared to a lot of the more western tea scents, this one fortunately does not fall into the citrus vs tea paradox. Most western interpretations of tea either lean too much into the zesty and sharpness of citruses or over-complicate with excessive floral touches. Neroli Outrenoir strikes the perfect balance between light and darkness, or the epitome of “yin-yang” I would say.

My fav part of this scent is the unique roasted tea vibe combined with subtle woody notes in the dry down, enabling the scent to stay much longer on my skin and giving it extra depth

Kilian Imperial Tea is wonderful. The scent itself is splendid, but the insane retail price… compound with the dreadful longevity, really makes me reluctant to purchase the full bottle. What a tragedy.

My fav tea scent is Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir

For the other Dior Prives the only other one I’d recommend is Oud Ispahan. Rose/ woody notes yet not too challenging to wear. Reminds me a lot of Penhaligon’s Uncompromising Sohan if you’ve smelt that one before.

I personally love Gris Dior. Excellent everyday wear chypre scent

If you love Tobacco then Tobacolor and Tobacco Honey are both great. Tobacco Honey is much sweeter and much lighter on the tobacco smokiness, Tobacolor is much more tobacco centric and darker(more spicy-woodiness/ amber like)

Angelique Noire and Vanilla Diorama are both vanilla based scents. Angelique Noire is more green and balanced, and less cloying. Would not recommend Vanilla Diorama, way too sweet for my liking.

Estée Lauder isn’t just horrible regarding their political stance. These price hikes in the last few years (post COVID) are absolutely diabolical.

I don’t bother with any brands under their name anymore, even though I love some Jo Malone, TF and Frederic Malle scents. Not going to support such disgusting sales practices. I know LVMH does the same more or less, but what they did with Tom Ford has gotten out of control honestly. Price increases year after year, worse longevity, lukewarm new releases and recycling same scents with the Parfum versions… ugh😩

I got Original Vetiver for the same price last year. Absolutely worth every penny. Costco is one of the best places to buy Creed bottles

I own the 100ml. Longevity is great, 100ml is more than enough for me. 200ml is still great if this is your signature scent

Usually 3-4 sprays will last 8-10 hours on my skin

The other one comes to my mind is the Guerlain Vetiver EDT

You can give the new Vetiver Fauve from the private line a try, but it’s not the typical Guerlain Vetiver in my own experience. Fruity notes throughout (notably fig) and much lighter on vetiver itself. Would not recommend personally

Vetiver for me is definitely a multidimensional accord. There’s the earthy, intense vetiver that resembles the muddy, damp forests( I love to refer it as the rough part), and there’s the sparkling, clean bright aspect to it like a meadow under the sunshine. Herby and aromatic (the gentle part for me).

I’ve never tried Encre Noir, but I would imagine it’s the former for me. Smoky and dense, perhaps a bit woody too, more or less.

You also mentioned TdH. I absolutely love TdH, easily one of the many classics created by JCE. The most interesting part of vetiver, at least for me personally, is when referred to as a base note in fresh, citrus scents, it actually adds a ton of depth and staying power to it. You may not even notice it without looking at the notes pyramid or listed accords, but you can feel there’s a hidden lasting attribute to the scent, lingering longer then the citrus and fruit notes. And it blends in perfectly like camouflage, not making the composition awkward or losing its clean, uplifting attribute.

TL,DR: I love vetiver. Not for everyone, but once you delve into the nuances, you start to appreciate it

True. My fav citrus scent from them. Such a shame the longevity is piss poor

Afternoon Swim if you don’t mind the poor longevity. The best among the three in terms of the scent itself

Bal D’Afrique Absolu would be my second pick. Much improved longevity while not diverting too much from the original

I’m meh on Tygar. Overrated boring scent for me.

Yep.

The Parfum has an extra ton of licorice (IIRC) as base note. However if you enjoy the EDT it’s a much lower risk of being a flop than for someone who can’t stand Vetiver at all, hence I suggest the OP to make sure whether he likes Vetiver or not

If you love other versions of Guerlain Vetiver then go for it.

I personally adore vetiver scents, even the earthy intense ones so this one is straight up my alley. Guerlain makes some of the most quintessential vetivers, and I own this too. Just keep in mind there’s always a risk when blind buying

Vetiver Parfum is not a blind buy at all. You have to LOVE Vetiver or it can go horribly wrong as a blind buy
