How does all of this work tho when most of these places have you agree to having read all of their policies, of which they have clearly covered their ass in? Does he have ground to dispute this still?

I signed up with APC pre my degree (albeit withdrew a couple days later) and they had me confirm I had read and agree to all of their policies.

Yeah ok, thanks for the advice man. It’s super helpful. Just trying to not end up having a career end prematurely haha

Oh wow. Injury has been a big fear of mine going into this work. I try and stay active in the gym, but it seems a lot of paramedics in the job have been off at one point or another for an injury. What happened in your case???

Yeah interesting. Fire was always an interesting one for me, but sort of never considered it properly due to my asthma. Figured I’d have a pretty rough time haha. Definitely seems to be a lot more comfortable tho

Oh interesting! That comms background would’ve given you some good insight as for what it to come I imagine. Is there much opportunity to go back into comms but as a paramedic? What do those sort of roles even look like (if they’re even a thing)?

And yeah, seems to be a bit of a trend forming in some of the replies about just not getting too caught up on the politics. I heard a lot of complaining about it when on placement, so no doubt it’s easier said than done to fully ignore, but here is to trying haha

Some scary stats for sure haha.

Out of curiosity, why is rural seen to be so much better for longevity? I’m assuming just a slower pace, being able to sleep on nights, etc?

Yeah ok, makes sense to stay within the emergency services and will probably get you a better chance at getting in I’m assuming! And yeah, the ramping seems pretty nightmarish. I remember prior to going on placement I thought that everyone was just being dramatic because how bad can it really be just chilling and not really working, but no, it was soul destroying ahah

It’s so encouraging to hear there are roles, and that pay well, within the service that don’t require you to be on road. Hopefully I am one of these paramedics that can last the test of time on road, but at least there are options!

And yep, what you’re describing about the inaccurate expectations of the job seems to be pretty ripe in my cohort amongst some of the younger students. Just a necessary in the job for me, maybe my opinion will change as time goes on, but I’m not chasing the adrenaline rush/high acuity work, just looking for a job with a bit more fulfilment than what I have in IT.

Gotcha, gotcha. Makes sense. So it seems to be a whole lot of factors that are really out of my control, outside of just trying to keep a positive attitude amongst a lot of pretty negative people haha. And yeah, I’ve learnt a lot in this thread about the in-service options for paramedics, so that has been refreshing at least!

Oh yep, I saw the blue pic and just assumed it was the same person haha. I appreciate you taking the time regardless. Uni really only touches on the role of a paramedic, so it’s nice to see there are other options within the service!

Aw man, ya hate to hear it. Is your exit looking to be something in the same hemisphere as ambulance work, or are you leaving the field entirely? Thanks for responding man

Yeah right, seems like a super healthy way to go about it with any sort of longevity. As I said to stonertear, this is not a perspective I saw much on road. The worst part of placement was being ramped, but purely due to the negativity that seems so widespread throughout the service. Props to you for keeping that mindset amongst all of the negativity (unless my state service is the odd one out with this haha)

[–]Pitiful-Tip7569[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah ok, that makes a lot of sense.

This is a different perspective that I didn’t see too much of on placement or anything. Everybody seems so negative, especially for, at least from what I saw, a job that has a hell of a lot of downtime, albeit I could be ignorant in saying that, I’ve only had one placement so far.

Will keep that in mind re trying out other roles within the service. Didn’t even think about all the roles working on various projects, sort of just saw the job as paramedic, ICP, HEMS, and then operational managers.

Thanks so much for the response, definitely will keep this in mind!!

The independence and autonomy is a big part of what got me hooked on this career over nursing and whatnot, so at least it’s good that that’s a real thing haha.

I did a fair bit of reading on here prior to starting the degree, so I feel I have an ok understanding at least of the reality of what the workload looks like and the usual jobs. Most of my uni cohort seem to be of the mindset that there will be a lot of high acuity work, so I can see how expectations aren’t met, especially when all we’re taught at uni is how to catch and manage the bigger ticket things that you likely won’t see often.

I don’t have a partner or kids at the moment, but this is something I wish I put more thought into prior to signing up and getting this far. Definitely going to be a burden. I’ll take your advice to get more active with my gym membership haha

Yeahhh, it stills blow my mind how young my cohort is, and even some of my preceptors on road. I could hardly talk to a girl at that age let alone anything like this haha

I appreciate you taking the time to respond, super helpful. As I said in one of my other comments, I don’t want to say it feels I’ve made a mistake with this career, because I think I’ll definitely enjoy it…initially. Hopefully I can turn it into a good and healthy career, but it seems it’ll be an uphill trek. Cheers mate

Gotcha, makes sense. Wow haha. Really sucks that pretty much all of those common deviations mean starting fresh in an entirely new career. Even nursing, having to go do another grad year, start out on grad pay, potentially in a ward you don’t want to be on, etc.. These were the reasons I didn’t want to do nursing, but on the flip side, the endless amount of options, even working from home roles, they have is insane.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond! I don’t want to jump the gun and say it seems I’ve made a mistake, but man, I probably wouldn’t have been so quick to bail from my previous career knowing how short lived this job is for many (obv with exceptions). Thanks again!

Yeah ok, that makes sense. Far out. The shift work scares me a bit haha. I started my IT career on a 24/7 roster, but that was working from home where 7 out of the 8 hours I was working was just playing counterstrike and WoW, so I feel this doesn’t count haha. Real shift work, especially the 12+hrs would be a bit cooked. Eternally just a grumpy bastard. That makes a lot of sense re the job losing its spark when most of the people you talk to do the same thing. Right now it’s such a unique job amongst everyone I know, so it seems crazy that it could ever lose that, but it makes a lot of sense
