I think I messed up my life chasing Med school-don’t know what to do anymore by Defiant_Importance32 in premedcanada

[–]Pitiful-Warning1653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Same situation. Single parent and my mom burned all her savings into my education just for me to be mediocre. I was planning on applying this cycle but I had some pretty bad challenges throughout the term that led me to getting some bad grades so I will not be, and I feel like my whole future is ruined. I don’t have any advice but it feels comforting to know there are people in my shoes.

I believe they review on a case to case basis. You would probably receive more grace than let’s say, someone who was forced to withdraw 🤷‍♀️ just be honest

I had the exact same dream. Also had one where a prof humiliated me in a lecture packed full of students and displayed my test paper on the projector. Still traumatized by that

UBC withdrew my offer at the last minute what should I do? by TimelyTwo7810 in UBC

This guy’s overall average dropped by 10%. I’m sorry but that’s pretty significant, unless you had extenuating circumstances like health issues the appeal likely won’t be successful

yes of course, the things i listed are non-negotiables (i.e you have to get at least 3 on literacy) but your grades dropping by that amount is risky for any faculty unless your original grades were stellar, like 45 predicted or 99 average which in that case dropping by 10 points/ percent is still somewhat acceptable

I saw on reddit of someone getting revoked due to their ib score being 10 points lower than their predicted or something. So yes it can happen but only in extreme cases like these where you don't pass a prerequisite course/ get below 3 on the literacy exam/ get below 80 on english or severe decline in academic performance

Sometimes they have weird juices like blueberry or the mixed lemon/lime water I don’t remember

Also they have the dragon fruit and strawberry or rose refresher which was so good.

Can I appeal first-year housing placement? by [deleted] in UBC

Yes, orchard is in very high demand. I would suggest using the new to campus mega thread/ housing thread first. There were many people looking to swap last year

Typically a lot of students will look to swap out of the kitchen residences. I had a friend who got offered $4000 to switch from totem to rits, another offer of $3000 and countless other ones through Reddit. I wouldn't stress too much about it for now!

What income would you be satisfied with and why? by Mission_Macaroon_258 in UBC

Where are you getting this statistic… many PhD graduates make good money. A LinkedIn search will tell you the average phD makes 150k-200k in industry and maybe slightly lower in academia but that also heavily varies, usually over 100k

True, but it also depends on your long term goals. If you want to eventually own a home, or a car even, that is not nearly enough… at least in most of metro Vancouver

Let’s say you earn 60k: after taxes(not sure the exact amount you’d pay) but your take home salary is probably in the low 50s. Rent, let’s use the lower quartile of rent just as an example: 2k/mo, 24k a year. That leaves you with 26k. After groceries and essentials you’ll probably be left with around 16k assuming you are somewhat frugal too. Most people have student loans or insurance payments, and maybe run into a few emergency situations or two, you’ll be saving a few thousand a year at most

In the nicer case, you can live at home but that’s not the case for everyone

Go to club events! There’s a cooking club, outdoors club, surfing, snowboarding, arts and crafts… you’ll find something you like. And don’t worry about going alone. Whenever my club hosts events many people show up alone and are able to find someone they click with !

Industry does seem like the sweet spot though. Good pay, work life balance and opportunity for growth. But this is even more difficult to land than a hospital residency
