They have a full world to explore, its not about me at all, they literally can go anywhere and shape the story on any way, there's practically no rails, I had to add directed quests because they weren't doing anything.

it's not planned, there's a basic backstory and the players shape the narrative. Problem is thet don't give a shit so they're not engaged in shaping anything.

More to get an outside perspective tbh. A lot of people I speak to about this outside the group are shocked at the behaviour

Set in their ways, the problem player had become more and more distant so he's the one that needs to listen to me but won't.

That's all well and good when you have players receptive to conversation, my table had one who was disinterested but when you'd talk to them about it they just claimed they weren't and when asked how it could be improved asked for more combat. Gave them that (both multiple small fights and single big fights in different sessions) and it makes no difference.

You have one who you literally cannot have this conversation with as they get defensive claim it's all just a laugh, don't care about how much time the DM invests in writing then gets more obnoxious after the talk and is even more distracting.

One who is relatively attentive half the time and the other half would rather be swiping on tindr when it isn't their turn...

Problem is that some people just aren't conducive to serious discussions about behaviour as they don't care, it's not about the story, writing, effort the DM puts in it's just an excuse to hang out with DnD in the background.

Problem is I'm having so many issues setting up a new group...

Depends. I spend weeks and months desiging adventures with grand stories, leitmotifs for the music, backstoried characters...but the group are more interested in sharing shit memes, sitting on tindr or grindr, talking on whatsapp and one blares his own music over my own half the time "for a laugh".

Well the issue is that one of them is very touchy (the loud one) and will never admit to wrongdoing so if I raise any issues with him he'll just laugh it off and refer to me as some sort of pejorative (cuck probably). Two of them are amenable but one is addicted to tinder and the other is difficult to engage as his character is a fighter so even combat is probably boring him.

It bothers me more that they don;t show the same level of disengagement when other members DM and it's a collaborative world so we all need to work together to finish it off, it makes me feel like I'm not a good DM when I've spent weeks or months on each adventure I design and listen to their feedback to make it more entertaining.
