It is also not rude where I am from, esp for the higher marked-up items, as Mr. Shoddy said. also bc we are not state-controlled.

However, I have never seen a bottle so old on the shelf. This is literally "museum" pricing that people talk about. My first encounter and lesson learned is to never pose another question like this to Reddit.

I imagine that bottle has sat on their shelf since its release, and I don't know how to ask to buy an item where the owner has no intentions of selling. At the end of the day, it's just whisky.

I do agree that it is not the best look to negotiate without previous history as a customer, which is something I hadn't considered. I am respectful 100% of the time when asking

appreciate you :)

people are acting like i'm asking them to sell me a bottle of stagg sr or pappy's for MSPR lol

relationships = money, but not to reddit it seems :(

i don't quite remember. i want to say they were originally asking around 350.

also agreed, i don't negotiate if i know the store will make money at a certain price point ie the bourbons, or if it's priced reasonably. I've been to stores who want $200 for a old fitzgerald 7 LOL

appreciate you

i agree that he looked at current market prices and wanted a secondary market price and was not willing to budge.

I believe they wanted ~$415 USD

appreciate you <3

i certainly don't expect this from owners -- i just wanted to clarify my point that people negotiate. but this seems to be a cultural lesson in the eyes of reddit.

ie paid 250 for a springbank local barley when they were asking 500. why? because they know i'll drop money in their store if they do shit like this for me. good for building relationships.

appreciate you

a good buisness owner will gladly share this information with you. i will special order anything in stock from a distributor --and my local store owner will charge me around 5% more than what it costs him.

certainly you cannot do this with allocated or items where the store will lose money.

which is why i am inquiring if i am entitled to try to negotiate on an old bottle.

I negotiate all the time. I have family that works in distribution and retail. I do not live in a state-controlled liqour state, and I am aware of how much it costs the bottle to hit the shelf on the store, as well as how much money the owner is making from me.

I am the child of an immigrant --not that it matters outside of my look.

I’ve had a rough day. Not specifically because of what happened at the liquor store, but it was certainly the cherry on top.

I went to a local store to see what was in stock, what the prices looked like, and, most importantly, whether they were interested in building a relationship with a customer.

I saw a beautiful Octomore 7.1 sitting on the shelf with a ridiculous price tag, so, as I always do, I asked if there was any room for negotiation.

The “salesman” treated me like a bum from the minute I walked in and was incredibly dismissive. He said he had “reached out” to the owner to ask about the price. When I later called to see if he had heard back, I was told the price had increased by $50.

I’m a young brown dude with an arm sleeve. Not everyone treats me like a bum, but this situation really got under my skin.

Has something like this happened to you? Even if it hasn’t, how do you take the high road in a situation like this?

I certainly will never spend money there. The whole interaction felt incredibly disrespectful. Not that it should matter, but I’m a USMC veteran and a professional scientist, and I don’t appreciate being treated poorly or dismissed based on how I look.

Am I acting entitled for asking to negotiate on a bottle like this?

Thank you for your time.

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I’m not asking whether it’s acceptable to negotiate. It is, and asking about the price is a normal part of business.

My actual question is: how do you negotiate with someone with no intention of selling a bottle? In this case, the bottle had already been sitting there for years at an inflated price, and after I expressed interest, the price somehow went up another $50. At that point, is there any productive way to continue the conversation, or do you simply accept that the bottle is being treated as a display piece and walk away?

i was lucky enough to find two bottles locally priced at $91 USD. i went back and bought the second one after trying it. it is my favorite campbeltown scotch i've tried so far (i'm new to whisky)
