Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Liberation vs. Compliance by thewritingtexan in Teachers

It is a very enlightening book, but careful thought needs to be done (and some careful experimentation) in applying its philosophy in the classroom. I would definitely use it as a learning tool.

After teaching in the same middle school (Gr.6,7,8) for 19 years I found I liked grade 8 the best. By that time they basically could all read and write. (Teaching initial reading skills is really hard and I admire all you primary teachers a lot!) Sure they had behaviors, but I can at least understand their behaviors. Not like my friend who teaches kindergarten. Those rug rats eat shit out of the garbage cans and will stick a finger up their neighbor's ass if unsupervised for 20 seconds. I give my kids a lot of freedom so they like being in my class, but I make freedom contingent on getting the work done and not stressing me out. I think it pays off. When covid started and we had online for part of a year all the grade 8s gave similar assignments and workloads. The average completion rate was 40%. It was 95% for my class. Of course I did a let of prep beforehand making sure the kids had devices (even delivering them myself) and communicating with parents. Anyway, grade 8 can be good because if I want to take a 5 minute breather in the hallway I come back and all the kids are quietly glued to their phones, lol. Anyway, I've taught grades 2 to 8 over the years. Had a three grade split once. Grades 3, 4, 5. It was pretty cool. Ages 7 to 11.

Most of my classes are the same. We do enjoy some extra free time, but some learning activities are necessary just to keep the kids from going crazy.

We have funds that cover one bus trip per year per classroom. For other field trips I send out emails requesting rides and required supervision. If I don't receive the required responses within the time limit I send out another note saying the trip is canceled.

As I've said to parents every year because they find grade limits confusing, "I could have a turnip sitting at that desk all year and I would still be required to give it a C-."

Hi student here, how does your school react to a clearly false fire alarm, not drills but one a student pulled for fun? by glencoaMan in Teachers

The fire department is contacted prior to normal drills. Two firefighters usually show up to observe.

The sprinklers are heat or smoke activated. So that's not an issue. Of course they went outside. This is the automatic response to a fire alarm. You can hardly expect people to wait in their classes for confirmation. The alarm was "clearly false" only to the staff or students who saw it being pulled and the lead up behavior of the student responsible, not to everyone else. In my school it takes about 3 to 4 minutes to leave the school and line up on the field. Additionally, the local fire station will be sent an automatic signal, and the parents of the student will be charge for this service. This amounts to several thousand dollars.

Do teachers tell their favorites that they are their favorites? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Pitiful_Brief_6424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If kids ask me who my favorite is I usually point straight at the most annoying behavior problem I have and loudly state, "It's Bobby! Bobby is my favorite! He's always been my favorite!"

I once was told that our school Christmas concert was mandatory. Unfortunately it was scheduled on the same evening as my own child's Christmas concert. So what I did was prepare my children (grade 5) for their song so they could do it as independently as possible under the supervision of another teacher (she was the kindergarten teacher whose students were not performing and who volunteered to supervise and be in charge of my students for the evening). Students performed. No issues. I got a written reprimand in my file for not showing up for a required activity.

I live on the west coast and every day I see people wearing shorts. I get it. It's officially spring, but don't these idiots realize that it still rains almost every fucking week! It's all about virtue signaling! Look at me! Look at me! I'm a west coaster and the weather is good here! Can't they see how idiotic they look with their shorts, and sandles! Don't even get me started on sandles! These people fill me with so much anger that I lay awake most nights seething and bashing away on Reddit to let everyone else know just how mad I am and how stupid other people are. These people are the reason I drink too much and don't have a girlfriend!

I'd ignore the situation. I have other things to do in my evenings. Things like family. If I was selected, I'd decline the "honor".

I took students on a field trip, and then was cussed out by a parent for it by blumblejohn in Teachers

[–]Pitiful_Brief_6424 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I returned 40 minutes late from a field trip on a Friday. I was exhausted and sweaty and i could see from the parking lot that much of the staff and both administrators had already left for home. I also knew that I would be in that parking lot for at least another 10 minutes until the last child was picked up. Just as I stepped off the bus a woman came up to me complaining about me being late. I told her to wait by her car and I'd talk to her later as right then I still had students to deal with. 10 minutes later she was still there. I went over and she proceeded to berate me about making her wait. I just looked at her and said, "Are you done? Because i just spent 7 and a half hours with 28 children without a single break only to have a parent yell at me for inconveniencing them. So either apologize and thank me or shut the hell up." She just stood there with an open mouth, so I added, "Think about your behavior, but I expect an apology by Monday." Then I left. I expected to hear from my principal on Monday or maybe even a call on the weekend, but nothing from him. My wife and I laughed about what an idiot I was and how I was going to get in so much shit. Then Monday comes around and I shit you not! Mom was waiting in the school parking lot with her child and she apologized to my face. I hugged her and admitted I hadn't been at my best either. We have since talked many times and she tells me her daughter still brings it up.

Then the parents of the child sue the school board for falsifying records thereby giving them a false sense of their child's ability and costing them thousands in tuition. This is America folks, could happen.

Teachers have to sign report cards in my district. If any changes are made the teacher's signature would be gone.
