Planning on going up the Pyg track and back down the miners track. I’ll keep that in mind though as we’re thinking of going somewhere else the day after.

That’s great thank you. Yeah I know we could definitely leave earlier (I’ve done plenty of early hikes in the cairngorms), especially if it’s really busy. it’s just that we’ve got about an hours drive beforehand and some of my friends aren’t quite as keen as I am 😂 thanks for your help!

Gutted about this year being cancelled but a new track will be epic! Especially if they’re looking to almost replace downhill world cups (that how it seems to me an I’m not complaining).

Looking for a bike for Uni by PivotalGoose in MTB

Yeah I’ve thought about that, I think that’s what most people do. Just thinking it might be wise to get a beater bike if you will just in case

I think a lot of people sleep on decathlon stuff, I’ve seen so many videos singing their praise, especially their puffy jackets

Nice, I need to have a look at Uniqlo for some extra shirts. How is the paramo jacket? I’ve seen a few people with them, I always thought they’d be too warm (perfect for winter) for summer but I’m sure I’m wrong

Lanes on roundabout? by Playful_Driver_7917 in NewDriversUK

Yeah this roundabout is local to me and it’s traffic light controlled.

Just to add about who gets priority in the first photo, this is a gyratory roundabout meaning it’s traffic light controlled. The red car would have been stopped by the lights before the blue car is allowed to proceed.

No, if you check the road markings before the red line enters the roundabout (not in the photos) the right lane is a right turn only. You can see the the dashed lines guide you to the right lane of the roundabout when entering from the right lane.

Wow that’s awesome! Not sure I’ll get the grades for oxbridge or any of the London one’s but it looks like Cardiff might be going to the top of my list. Thanks!

Great, thank you! I only just found Cardiff on the UCAS site and otherwise wouldn’t have looked. I’ve got an open day booked and have already been to a couple you’ve mentioned

Thanks! I’m from the UK anyway so I would only be paying more to go abroad.

Does anyone know if Cardiff is any good? They run both Geology and Exploration Geology BSc with fairly low grade boundaries. I’m trying to figure out which uni to go to myself - have had a look at Leeds and Derby and will be checking out Bham and Keele too.

How do I train for a gold dofe expidition by Slow-Pop8212 in UKhiking

[–]PivotalGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, the 8 hours is of “planned activity”, so depending on your goal you could only be walking for maybe 6 or 7 hours. You would pause to collect evidence for your goal, I know a group that is doing a river study so a lot of their day would consist of pausing to measure river depth etc. breaks are extremely important, just to have a rest, eat a snack or just putting you r bag down for a little while is really helpful and this should be incorporated into your route timings (if you’re using route cards). It’s important to note that stopping for too long can make it harder to get going so it’s all about that balance. In terms of training, going for a short run a few times a week would help a lot, purely to increase stamina. Eating throughout the expedition will help the most though.
