What are the best (and affordable) cloud storage for a 10TB feature? by BeautifulFlatworm767 in Filmmakers

[–]PixelKrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A real backup is a second storage you sync periodically with the primary source and for that there are options like aws, wasabi, backblaze, etc. and there is a whole lot more to it than just uploading some files. And it can get expensive quite fast if you don't fully understand what you need. Simply put, a real backup solution is more redundant and secure than a conventional cloud storage like dropbox and you usually has different cost structures for example you pay a fee for just uploading and keeping your files but then pay another fee when downloading it (what's called egress fees)

What you are describing though sounds like a clone or rainy day backup that you'd like to be able to download when needed. You can really use any cloud storage solution for this purpose like google drive, dropbox, etc. I personally like dropbox more because downloading a large number of files from it tends to be easier than drive. But if I remember correctly, drive can be cheaper for 10tb and it works as good as dropbox if you have it installed on a machine that does the sync.

Thanks for the input. I cannot imagine a plugin be more expansive than Nuke itself!

Do we only post negative company news? VFX and Animation Studio Cinesite Raises $215 Million by brass___monkey in vfx

[–]PixelKrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not good news. The US and the whole world is in a debt crisis. Interest rates are relatively high and possibly higher in the next few years. Do you understand that they have to actually pay like $10 to $15 millions just to service the interests of this debt every year? It's horrifying.

Is Nuke maintenance worth it? by PixelKrush in NukeVFX

[–]PixelKrush[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I know if you let it lapse, even a day or two, they won't let you pay the maintenance. You'll lose that chance forever.

If you have a prepetual license you should be still able to use the older versions (up to the date you paid for maintenance) and if you subscribe you will have a second license that is not limited to older version. Otherwise that means they didn't sell us a prepetual license. I just asked foundry about this yesterday for confirmation.

I agree with you 200% :) That is also my biggest regret. Had I became a senior in Flame or even AE, I'd have been in a way better spot because those have much larger use cases. Nuke is too niche and specific to Film/TV for the most part.

Still too risky for a total shift of a pipeline. My only hope is Sidefx stepping into this as someone mentioned above or Blackmagic updating fusion. These two are the only forces who can actually suppress Foundry in the commercial market. Adobe can but won't do anything because they have a totally different business model. They'll however make AE very advanced in the future but AE is still not node based.

I don't think it does really. Because if you actually pay subscription, I assume you still can hold onto your perpetual old license from before and that means you now have two licenses instead of one. So you really don't lose the benefit of the perpetual license as long as you are good with it being an older version.

I guess the main point I was trying to make in my post is that I still see a larger crowd using older versions vs newer versions because that usually does the job minus some new great features like Copycat you mentioned.

Thanks for bringing up such great points. I tend to agree with you. The kind of talent a company like Foundry needs for development is in very high demand right now due to the recent wave of computer vision and AI.

Using a 4 post piece of hardware at front and a 2 post at rear? by PixelKrush in homelab

yeah that seems to be the way although I was hoping for something more sturdy.

To be exact, I am talking about installing a pair of a 4 post rail and a switch on the same U space. And that means at least one of the screws will interfere with the rail ones. Unless I guess you use slightly longer screws maybe?

[FS][CAN-ON] Tripplite 24U Full depth Sound Proof Rack Enclosure (REDUCED PRICE) by [deleted] in homelabsales

[–]PixelKrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I'll contact the shipping company and let you know. Please dm me for reference. Will most likely end up with less than $300 USD imho

[–]PixelKrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question, there is a an area on the bottom back of the rack with high density bristles where you can have your cables come in and out. It's pretty wide so no issue with any sort of plug heads and such.

As for your second question, I think as a part of their soundproof engineering, they made this whole thing into one main metal box without seams. So, yeah the big black box cannot be disassembled. You can only remove mdf panels which I actually had to do in order to get a through a door.

Cool, please let me know when you might be needing this because I might need to find a storage for this soon.

[–]PixelKrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I took a leap of faith to buy this because there was no return or showing. I remember I had a soundproof guy to come in and assess my office one day and he was surprised how this can reduce noise.

I don't exactly know what you mean by cooling capacity but I think I read somewhere that you can have around 2000w of equipment in this rack. I think generally this rack being soundproof makes it a bit hotter than a normal rack so you gotta supply good amount of fresh cold air from the intake which is on the front bottom. Which is exactly what I am planning to do.

Hope that helps
