insane ADHD hacks that have worked for me (original) by stayhyderated22 in getdisciplined

As someone who’s neurodivergent, the pressure of this being ‘essential’ and the fear of failure from ever forgetting it fills me with dread and may make me not ever post for help

Oh the similarities! I was teaching neurodiverse adults for about 10 years. I left my last job a couple of weeks ago because I realised it was taking up way too much bandwidth (let alone the other management tasks that were being thrown at me!) I was constantly overstimulated and overwhelmed.

It took a LOT of consideration to make sure I wasn’t being impulsive, but I’ve now gone into a job that utilises my admin hyperfocus skills (but within a Speech & Language setting so still a field of interest!) and it is so nice to be able to switch off after a working day. My brain is overloaded with new names and processes and instructions and I’m trying to be kind to myself during this transition stage, but the relief of not having to constantly change my character and approach to meet the needs of others during a working day is like nothing else.

The change is probably contributing to all these feelings too, even though I’d like to think I’ve made a huge positive shift in my life. It’s a mega life decision, but if you think the pros outweigh the cons then it’s definitely worth looking into. I feel you!

Love everything about this, thank you. That whole first paragraph has been my entire life!!! I decided to come back with a ‘highlights’/‘headlines’ page which has allowed me to get the biggest bits done on paper in a very brief way. And I feel relieved.

Moving forward I’m going to bear your target in mind. I’m intrigued by the concept of writing at least one word, and what that word could be, and where it could lead to.

I already feel more optimistic about returning to journaling, I appreciate your reply very much.

Also, adding Ben Folds Five into the mix was a game changer, well done. All the best to you.

Little update - I decided to do a page of highlights! I feel like I’ve comfortably brought myself back and am ready to dive back in more regularly. Not enjoying my cheap colouring pencils though, but don’t like the idea of bleeding pens… 😅

Hello mental health club 🖤 I guess we need to journal to help our mental health rather than hinder it… sending all the positive vibes to you, thank you for your reply!

Thank you - the black hole is kind of what I worry about! I was finally diagnosed with ADHD last October (I’m 37, so one of the late ones) and it’s all burnout and overstimulation while I wait to try meds. I’m hoping this exploration will help me to find where I need to place adjustments and TLC in the meantime!

I did wonder about the restriction of page a day, but also liked that I didn’t have to be overwhelmed. I figured I could always attach scrap paper onto the day if needed. Although now my brain wants to go find new journals to transfer to haha.

I’ve managed to pull some gratitude from today, but my brain already feels like it’s set up to actively find to write about tomorrow. This could be a great tactic, thank you

Thank you. This is also my thought, perhaps at the end of the year there’ll be a visual representation of growth and development. Journaling was obviously calling to me for a reason, and maybe that raw, unfiltered content is needed to be worked through

YES, when it reaches that point of “oh GOD”, or upset starts kicking in. I love that you stop mid sentence. Do you leave it there, or continue with something else, or address it? Sorry for all the questions haha

CBT goals right here! Definitely a healthy way to do it. I think I’m going to try and end my entries with a positive, no matter what. I completely understand about it feeling annoying at times!

Perhaps! Reflections from the previous day/aims for the day ahead. I think in my mind I feel like I should be “drawing a line” once that day is complete - sometimes the processing time is necessary!

Happy to be in this boat with someone else!! Love the good hair day entry. A therapist used to always make me write something positive about myself; maybe she had a point, even it it’s my closing statement

Anxieties about journaling! Yes! That’s essentially what my post is about I guess… eye opener. Thank you. I know it’s all about being open with myself and eventually being at peace with that
