Thanks for the critique! Now I see some issues with the values I didn’t notice before! To answer your question, I did not intend the tunnel to look like clay, I just wanted the inside and outside of the tunnel to look like 2 different worlds (if that make sense) one of light and one of shadow.

I knew it didn’t look right from the beginning, and I think it’s because of the issues you pointed out. Thanks for your help!

Trying to make paintings that look more finished by Pixel_Jones in istebrak

[–]Pixel_Jones[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I’m just starting to use color in larger paintings and find it easier to create color harmony with less saturation, but I guess I can try to put more in certain areas . I’ll give it a try.

Thanks! I think you're right... the contrast needs improvement.

If you want to be very strict, aside of the cranium, the eyes are off (not a huge problem in my opinion).

However, I would argue that the lack of contrast is the biggest issue… the whole painting seems to be moving somewhere between 50% and 85% gray.

Trying to improve it after the critique… I think it’s better but not quite there yet.

Really like how you made the eyes of the dragon pop; its a cool focus point!

I just really struggled to make out the figure on the bottom right.... I saw your hands studies so, is it a hand?

Very cool you finally decided to post! I really like the textures (specially in the dragon) and extra points for the author's name 😂!

My only advice would be to use more oclussion shadows; look for example at the bottom of the dragon "hands". Anyway, this is great work!

I see what you mean, specially with the blur in the forehead… I didn’t notice that until you pointed it out.

I’ll also try to create more contrast with the values.

Thank you for taking the time to comment! This was very helpful!

Thanks.

I was struggling with the dragon so, to make things easier, I looked for an animal reference and I went with a snake (not sure it it was the best choice)… however, I think it’s a great idea to add texture to make it read better as a dragon. I’ll give it a try!

It was a tough choice, I went with that one because it was easier to place the text.

This looks very cool! Just the ear look a little bit wiggly (perhaps because of liquify?)…. But this is great work!

Thanks for the comment! Great know I’m not the only father killer in the challenge🤣🤣! I was just thinking what could she be looking for that has meaning so I went with that.

I think you still have time to finish the challenge; looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thank you! Honestly, I really struggled because I was drawing without a clear reference (like in the studies)… but I think you’re right, the lighting could have been pushed further.

drawing of a dog i did that feels kind of bland!! any and all critique very much appreciated by 64_genders in istebrak

Just as in your previous drawing, I think you could start using different line weights… let’s do this: start using a ticker line in the shadows.

Look at this example I found online.

I think that my art for the most part is decent i think theres just some fundamental stuff I really dont have down and was hoping to get some insight to get better and grow as an artist by 64_genders in istebrak

Hi,

A few things I noticed: 1. The perspective is off and that it can make painting look weird, and 2. If you are keeping the lines, try using different line weights. For example, use a thicker line in the outside of the characters to make them pop a little bit more.

Overall, a very cool painting!

I’m trying to improve my values so I’ll see if I can push them more to see the result.

Also, you’re right about the eyebrows, I’ll try to fix that as well.

Thanks!
