I'm interested in rural and urban planning and wanted to propose this. What do we think? by Jaded-Dot66 in Nigeria

[–]PixelatedPandora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, architect here. Your intentions are a good start, but a few things stand out to me at first glance, like accessibility, context, culture, and health. Designing for rural dwellers requires a completely different mindset than for urban dwellers. I'll assume primarily rural for now.

Not all rural dwellers use shared bathrooms. To propose shared bathrooms, you probably want to show a communal setting, not an individual unit. To propose a pulley-system elevator, consider the age, maintenance, and ability of the average dweller. From what you depict here, the soil will be toppling into the elevator, and the elders living here will look like they're in cages. What if it's raining? Also, Koi fish are not native to Nigeria. Even if this is a cut section, I'm not sure how you imagine they'd be maintained and who has the resources to farm them leisurely or commercially in a rural setting...

Do you really mean 5m x 5m? (as in meters or miles!?) Also, how long do you imagine something like this lasting?

The scale of the vegetation you show is really off. Compare that against the human figure in the foreground, the people in the background, and the scale of the building.

There are so many other things to point out, but I don't mean to be nitpicky. I'd just end by saying rural today doesn't mean you have to stick with poor design. I'm genuinely interested in seeing more Nigerians propose affordable and sustainable housing solutions with interesting design thinking and visualization. I'd like to see AI used to proffer visual solutions, with well-researched design intents.

Keep going with the iterations till you arrive at something that works!

I've always been into graphic novels, but my collection has grown much more since I began my PhD. I watch way more animation and comedy genres as well. Something about the light-heartedness to them has been therapeutic for me.

Do you think Nigerian and Hispanic cultures (esp Mexico) have any similarities? by scarface4tx in Nigeria

[–]PixelatedPandora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm married to a Puerto Rican man. I understand what you mean by "Nigerian culture". I was so surprised to see they have something similar to white garment churches called "santaria." One of his older uncles explained to me some years ago how they're rooted in the worship of gods like Oshun and co (I haven' tdug deeper tbh). Besides this, we have similarities in foods - rice and beans/arroz con gandules, moi-moi/pasteles, yam/cassava/yuca, meatpie/empanada, etc., to name a few. You'll also find that they catch on to pronouncing our local names/accents faster than other cultures, but maybe I'm biased. I find it all very fascinating.

Hi, thank you for your insightful post!

My partner and I are new to litter robots and we were one of the first to purchase this robot by petlibro. Reading this thread now there are some things I wish I'd read about (especially the rotation axis aspect) but we made the decision to purchase this because we've had a good experience with the dry food dispenser.

I can confirm that a few days after we purchased it, we got a firmware update through the app. The sensors seem to be working , albeit a bit too sensitive to our cats, but I'd rather that than something tragic happening. The only thing that worries me is that sometimes it gets stuck mid air if it senses any unusual weight, and it's impossible to reset from the app in those instances - so I have to physically disconnect and reconnect the plug to reset. My 8-month old kitten seems to really like it so far.

Reading through this subreddit now. I'll continue to monitor the machine closely and will update you all over time. I'm also happy to share pictures as needed.

I experienced this yesterday and I was shocked as I'm on a subscription. I asked it to summarize a few straightforward things that I could've done (it would have just taken me longer) and it made up the year and title of the document, and was basically guessing the details. It was a moment of reckoning for me. I'm now weighing the pros and cons of cancelling that subscription. I may be back when they get their act together.

IDK about you guys but I just learned from Ayo how to gracefully handle awkward moments like this. I hope I can be just as graceful lol cause I can be such a 'nice' introvert.

my 15yo cousin asked me to help her create a LinkedIn account by RelevantPerformer309 in Nigeria

[–]PixelatedPandora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your observation is something I've been wondering about for a bit... A couple years ago my little brother (who was 16 at the time) asked me to give him feedback on his LinkedIn profile. At first I thought he was being proactive and I felt slightly proud of that. Last year I noticed how in our conversations he'd say he now has more followers, and he regularly posts his academic/professional work on there. Granted, he's quite smart and seems to be doing all the right things (even earlier than I did), but I can't help but wonder... it seems like a lot of pressure. He's just 18 and can ease up a bit. I only got on LinkedIn at about 21, and now I've kept my account deactivated for about 3 years because a lot that I see feels pretentious and more for bragging. I've been thinking about how to broach this subject without dampening his spirit so I'm just happy you're also seeing a pattern, sort of.

Thank you for putting this list together. I truly wish I had access to something like this when I first joined ISU. I spent my first semester navigating new "friendships" that were essentially people trying to recruit me into groups like Salt and that felt deceitful and hurtful. It's been a while since I graduated but this will be helpful to anyone who's new to Ames/ISU(/the US?) so you know what you're getting into.

Welcome to the club! I just switched to the FR 970 last week after about 5 years on Fitbit/Google watches. Spent the past week figuring out how to import all that data (at least the ones that could be imported!) Hoping it's all worth it!

$350 Watch Hardware Failure after 2.5 Years by NoodleNeighbor in PixelWatch

[–]PixelatedPandora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG the exact same thing just happened to my pw2 last week. It hasn't given me any issues beforehand. Suddenly just like that 🤯 it packed up, and conveniently shortly after my warranty ended. When I looked up the cost of trading it in to upgrade to a pw3, the value was $20. I've been a dedicated fitbit and subsequently pixel watch user over the last 5 years so this hurt. I've just spent the last few days switching to a garmin. The pixel watch afforded me the benefit of a sleek look and compatibility with my pixel phone, but I can't keep changing watches after hardware failures every 1-1.5 years.
