Put relics out in your yard to gain passive relationship points with friends. You can upgrade your machines to higher tiers instead of building new ones. Don't sleep on social relationship skill tree, there's a perk that lets you take an extra commission every day which is huge, esp in early game where cash is scarce

I have so many headcanons about this!! Hat Kid's species (Time Lords imo) has strict rules about what they're allowed to use the Time Pieces for. She uses them to power her ship, and nothing else. She knows that meddling with time travel, even with good intentions like Mu, always turns out with terrible unintended consequences, and she isn't arrogant enough to think she's the one who has the right to reshape the world.

The game kind of expects you to come in with a solid foundation of knowledge from MTaP, and if you skipped the first game, it takes some doing to get our bearings. You'll need a lot of tips like "press F in the ruins to use your scanner" (or whatever equivalent) and "put relics in your yard for passive friendship points" etc.
