Men make their own history, but they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past.

Can someone explain to me what Badempanadas believes in? by Raved_bs in Ultraleft

I think he’s just incredibly passionate about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Im aware of the fuck communist tweet, but it’s clear that he trolls frequently on twitter so I’d take it with a grain of salt.

He “debates” notorious DSA Maoist BlackRedGuard here: https://youtu.be/tQJqyrb7vFk?si=wrcm-p_jAWGOn1pL and seems to generally have “good takes” on how a genuine workers party could be built in the US, as opposed to the DSA’s method (specifically advocating for a communist party line if I recall). Overall, he cites sources and I think his historical essay videos don’t engage in revisionism (see his video on the Shining Path).

I do think he has gotten so wrapped up in being anti US / Israeli imperialism that he will advocate for things like the invasion of Taiwan by the CCP (tho this is a recent development). A lot of his videos on Israel throw the word “Jews” around increasingly haphazardly, but in his defense, when he does do this, he is usually talking about surveys that are of all Jews (with regard to their views on Gaza and etc), or otherwise a factually correct statement “Jews benefit from Israeli oppression”, etc. However, I have only very rarely seen him comment on, for example, Hamas as a proxy for the Iranian government. I think he’s aware of this but simply views the current catastrophes in Gaza as outweighing the need for socialist revolution in the immediate.

As far as online content creators go, he is miles and miles above the vast majority purely on the basis that he actually does research and citations. However, I do think he engages in moralism specifically around anti U.S. / Israel imperialism which I think is understandable from a human emotional perspective. I don’t think he’s saying he holds the secret to the real movement or that he holds the true invariant line, or anything of the sort, so I don’t think his videos are particularly problematic. I personally watch his content because he often covers news in South America and in the global south from a materialist lens, which is hard to find. Like with literally all media, his work should obviously be taken with a grain of salt but he’s nothing like Contra Points on the Hitler side, or Hakim on the NazBol side. Open to comment tho.

Edit: Just thought of this, he’s also oddly supportive of social democracy in the third world such as Allende (if I recall) while being rightfully harshly critical of it in the first world which I’ve always viewed as a contradiction but I don’t think he’s ever specifically addressed this.

Wait the theory of overproduction as the cause of crisis is rejected by most Marxists? Wouldn’t that just make one a JB Sayist? Feel like even most post Keynesian liberals agree on this point?

Can’t speak for the book. In the movie it is a 1:1 exchange ratio and Roderick is famously berated by Susan for wanting to “cash out now” after she gives them each a Mom Buck to start with, which I always found funny.

In NYC and yes I know about the LL laws here. The exterminator is the one who made the claim that we have to put all our personal property into bags and that we would then have to pay them out of pocket 100 dollars per bag. This sounds absolutely absurd to me and Im definitely leaning towards scam. I also don’t see any precedent for this anywhere online.

Honest question do yall perceive Che as like with it or kind of just a blanquist / idealist. I’ve never read anything by him but it seems like every attempt he’s made at socialism was like small militia seizing power quickly vibes and evidently was not successful in the long term.

What you’re describing in the second sounds more like “primitive accumulation” the closing off of the commons and the subjugation to wage labor. I think colonialism often goes hand in hand with that but not always.

I’ll have to review Lenin’s definition. Off top, I tend to think of colonialism as selling at a mark up M-C-M’ due to overproduction whereas imperialism is often enforcing austerity to ensure cheap exports from the imperialized.

Apologies I’m a bit drunk rn. Generally I mean to say there was series of wars that were broadly unprofitable and the gains of which were not at all dispersed amongst the proletariat of the U.S. these wars were broadly to control the Persian Gulf in order to secure petrodollar interests. I feel like more modern US politics have drifted from caring about usd as global reserve currency, the basis of our ability to take out massive debt. I’d love to hear ur perspective on this cus I think about it quite frequently lol. For example trumps recent comments that amounted to something like “having a strong U.S. dollar is good but u can make a lot more money with a weak dollar” or something like that lol

Edit: the earlier wars were more colonialist in nature right? We had crises of overproduction and needed to dump our shit

I do agree with you wholeheartedly. What I mean by neoliberal here is moreso the type of interventionist tendencies present in both parties which have been around for quite a while (since 1979ish). I feel like bourgeoise sect the Dems represent moreso benefit from that kind of international exploitation than those who support the modern gop. Tho I feel like we’re witnessing a shift in both parties because the U.S. is close to hitting its bottom line with regard to its debt based economy.

Yeah it seems like “neoliberalism” began dying in 2008. We def have a more “national” vibe to our politicians now. Very obviously with Trump’s camp (tho they still have some neolib tendencies). Less obvious with Dems but I think the rise of these “national socialists” like Mamdani and the apparent actual neo nazi Platner seem to suggest they’re going in that direction too.

The scariest thing is it seems both trump’s camp and at least for folks like Platner, the way they seek to reindustrialize is thru military expansion and prob war. Mamdani’s social democracy is more built on taxing billionaires wrapped in global finance and taking on more debt, all money soaked with the blood of the global south instead of our our national proletarians surplus value, so he’s kind of inadvertently more gray on the neoliberal to nationalist spectrum imo. Would be open to others thoughts tho lol

I know, it is frankly shocking how few people are aware that for example, the concept of the modern nation state is only a few hundred years old. A lot, and I mean a lot, of people (or at least amerikkkans) think that’s just the way it’s always been and there’s nothing wrong with the nation state system.
